Question for 2012 recruiting

  • I realize it's pretty early, but I have noticed a trend over the past few years.

If a school picks up an early pledge from a guy who other players can rally around they will typically have a pretty good class. With 2012 being HUGE for PSU's future who is out there now, that we are going after or offered, that can be our Silas Redd of 2012? I actually think Quinton Alston was that guy for Pitt until they "outsmarted" themselves.

Is Noah Spence that kind of guy? Our region, and recruiting ground (they are the same thing headslap) is pretty well loaded next year. If we can find that guy and get him interested in PSU I think it will go a long way to making 2012 a better year recruiting wise than this one.

One thing I noticed about the Q&A ... our committed guys seemed to like the school and or Larry Johnson. It wasn't about Paterno ... that's good and bad. Also makes me wonder what the heck Bradley did on the recruiting trail this year.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

  • Bradley didn't have anyone to go after, and when he offered his services elsewhere, was rebuffed - from what I understand.

You're right about the recruit "recruiter" - can play a big role. Hopefully 1 or 2 of the kids we're after can be that for us.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

That part about Bradley is what really makes me worried about future recruiting. Bradley has been a pretty decent recruiter over the years ... why not send him outside of his region, you know? Heck some of these schools don't have any roots around the nation, but they are still going there. Sucks that it had/has to be this way.

Spence doesn't strike me as a kid that will decide early.

You are correct. I'm sure he will enjoy the process and go on most, if not all of his visits.

I've seen places that say he doesn't want to drag it out, but I'm not sure what exactly that means. Could mean an early commit, but a kid like Spence is going to get offers from pretty much everyone, so he'll want to take his time and do his homework.

Speaking of Spence, I just read a Flounders article about him, where this sentence came up.

"LJ visited McDevitt after the Outback Bowl … and so did Notre Dame's Brian Kelly, Rutgers' Greg Schiano, Maryland's Randy Edsall and Cincinnati's Butch Jones."

One of these things is not like the others. In all honesty, if you told me we need to recruit the hell out of some kid and asked me who to assign, I'd pick LJ every day of the week. But when all the other visitors are head coaches, the kid might get the wrong idea when you send a dline coach.

  • Old news junny. We would have NO commitments if kids were put off by Joe not visiting.
As much as people complain............. PSU still get recruits doing it their way. Whether us fans like it or not.

JMO, LJ is the sole reason on the coaching staff that Spence is interested in PSU. Send the guy that gives you the best chance to land him, even if it means no head coach in this instance.

Yea, I know its old news, its just frustrating to read things like that every year. I'm certainly not in the "JOE MUST GO!" and "Run him out of town on a rail" camp, but I will say I'm very excited about the future of PSU recruiting once the new regime is in place.

That being said, the Paterno NAME still carries weight, so him not personally being there is one thing, but many players (2011 commits included) have said that the opportunity to play for Joe drove their decision making process.

You're right, one of these things is not like the others -- Penn State has a head coach who is already in the hall of fame.

Note too that these visits don't accomplish much besides making a symbolic gesture to say "we're interested" because the head coaches can't even talk to the kid; I'm not sure the same restrictions apply to assistants. So I wouldn't read too much into it -- we can just as easily say a kid would be be happier to see the position coach he would be working with every day.
