Postgrad QB D.J. Crook to run-on at Penn State

Responding to GRS 154 First, I would bet a few bucks on Crook not being anywhere close to 6'2". I bet he is 6'0". So I thought Whipple had more protypical size. Further, I thought Whipple had better mechanics in his throwing motion and threw a more accurate ball. I actually was thrilled with Whipple as a walk on. I like Crook and think he appears to be a real good athlete. Just my opinion. I think it is great to get a kid like Crook in the program.

    Got it.

Now this is just eye balling it, but both guys are listed at the same height/weight, and they look about the same size on film. I don't think Whipple has great mechanics, sort of pushes the ball at times with his abbreviated release, while Crook is perhaps a bit more fluid with his release. Neither has a D1 arm, which is probably why both are walk/run-ons. From a pure physical skills standpoint I don't see much of a difference between the two. Not that physical tools are the most important skills for OB's offense.

  • What Coach O and the rest of this staff has done is nothing short of amazing. Except for the early hiccups thay had a great season considering the defections and decommits we had. They seem to have many recruits talking about PSU as their dream school. I feel confident that PSU will do well even with the sanctions and be a real power afterwards.

  • Sounds like a good program kid. You never know, smart young man that applies himself may be a contributor. Good luck to him and great job by staff and the 2012 team for attracting these quality young men.

  • Whipple with that push release and good footwork is reminiscent if Danny Wuerffel. If he's half as good were in luck.

    What am I, omniscient?

  • I saw Matt play quite a bit at West and I can say the one thing he never lacked was mox.. er self belief. I was happy that he was getting a chance to be in the program as I thought he would be a good team guy, and at worst a good Scout Team QB. Did I think he would start the better part of 3 seasons when we had, 4/5 * QB's in Devlin, Newsome, Jones, and Bolden in the program? Not a chance. That said he got his break and made the most of it. Hopefully Whipple and Crook are coached up by BOB and Co, to be productive should their # be called.

Not a bad comparison. And Danny didn't have much of an arm either. Not a bad college QB though.

  • Perhaps it is too early to ask and since they are not on scholarship it may not matter but do either Whipple or Crook have any potential at other positions? Jus thinking that we may not need 5 deep at QB so could the one that "falls behind" have any shot at a slot role, safety, ?

  • Unlike some others, I think Crook is a better athlete than Whipple and could probably play strong safety and provide depth there based on that athleticism, if needed

In high school he was a four year starter... 77 TDs and over 8,000 yards with his senior season being a one partial because of a broken thumb.

    Looks like a solid walk-on.

Why did he not get any offers? Sounds like pretty good numbers?

part of it might be that he fractured his throwing hand thumb in the 5th game of his senior season and ended up splitting time for the rest of way. The other guy got the Boston player of the year award and is headed to Princeton. on the surface, it might seem like he was beat out by an Ivy League level recruit in high school.

edit: Also found that his father was his head coach until the end of his junior year when there was a "swearing incident". He was put on administrative leave and ultimately replaced by his defensive coordinator. DJ wasn't going to stay at that school for his senior year and was pretty upset about the whole thing. not sure how that might factor in, but it's an interesting dynamic for a senior season.

Just from watching film, it looks like he does not have typical D1 arm strength. But I always think that is a luxury. There was a pretty good player out of BSU named Kellen Moore. That kid had a noodle arm.
