  • Offense: Byers. Heard the kid was Gigantic for a RB/HB. Want to see for myself.

Defense: JVF (Van Fleet) This kid has been great on Special Teams. Great to hear he's breaking into lineup more for regular defense. Was a fan of his since a few years ago watching him make a great flying tackle on a kickoff and causing a fumble. Forget which game, guy didn't have a chance, JVF flattened him.

Sidelined: DJ, I think it's fairly telling that he's making the trip up this weekend after his "amazing" visit last weekend. Probably won't commit, but this weekend will go a long way in terms of how he views PSU moving forward, esp. since he will be around his potential new teammates for 2013.

  • I'm definitely interested to see the whole team and the choices already picked are great ones. So to be a little different, my picks are:

Offense: John Urschel (besides Stank at C, the RG spot is least talked about among the o-line. Both OT's and the LG spot have intriguing prospects so I'm less worried about them. Urschel is one of smartest kids on the team so if he can physically hold his own this year holding down the RG spot, our o-line could be really solid.)

Defense: Derrick Thomas (one injury away from starting, and he may have the all important role of nickel-back this year...I hope he comes to play this year)

Sidelined: Curtis Dukes (Zwinak seems to be developing, but I would think Dukes will get more carries this year than ZZ and a power back to compliment Redd would be huge)

  • Off.-Wzinak
    Deff-Zettle
    Sideline-Fortt at 244LBS.

I agree. Plus, we really didn't lose any significant player from the offense a year ago - Barham, Okoli, Pannell, Troutman, Szczerba, Stephon Green, Beachum and Moye. Moye had a very nice career at Penn State but he was not an impact player or the kind of guy that that will be difficult to replace. Troutman was a good player but not irreplaceable.

There will be significant upgrades in talent at some positions (OT's) and if players progress even modestly at some spots (like Haplea at TE, Urschel at RG, and so on) the offense will certainly be better than last year.

  • This years OL will be much better. Better OT's, No lose at OG, and our Center will improve from last year. RB: Silas much better, and I think Belton will be a very good back up, WR: Brown just as good as Moye, Slot: Kenney better than Smith, TE and HB: Much better development and system for our TE's. Our offensive scheme will be much better also.

Offense: Paul Jones - Please make the cut
Defense: Deion Barnes - From the limited video footage i have seen this spring, he looks like a good one
Sidelined: Mike Mauti - Potential Captain, would love to see how involved he is on the sidelines.

    This exactly for me.

Offense: Jones - Please look good.
    Defense: Deion Barnes: Potential Monster.
    Sidelined: What arch said.

  • Thanks for your thoughts, gang. Nothing too crazy here, though it is worth nothing that there were 14 different offensive players chosen as opposed to just nine guys on defense. Here are the leaders (players who got multiple mentions) after roughly 24 hours.

    Offense:

    Paul Jones -- 9 votes
    Jesse James -- 6
    Bill Belton -- 4
    Donovan Smith -- 3

Four players (McGloin, Gress, Dieffenbach, Zwinak) tied at 2 votes each

    Defense:

    Deion Barnes -- 14
    Curtis Drake -- 7
Adrian Amos and Anthony Zettel -- 4 each
Pete Massaro and Mike Hull -- 2 each

    Sidelined:

    Alex Kenney -- 15
    Khairi Fortt -- 6
    Michael Mauti -- 5
    Dorian Johnson -- 3

  • Offense - all about PJ. Please deliver us from evil... Amen.

Defense - I'm comfortable with LB and DT's - position I'll be watching is the DE's -- most notably Olaniyan. Lots of reps, looks the build, athletic, hope he can show some pass rush.

Out - very disappointed I won't see how SOA looks on the field. I'm worried about the secondary.
