The Tailgreat at the Bryce Jordan Center is fun for kids. It is held on Saturday morning. If you sign them up for the Nittany Lions Kids Club, you can get them to meet the Nittany Lion and have pictures taken there. Last year, our kids got to go out on the court and cheer with the Lions and the cheerleaders.

I'm not saying it isn't really good, just that it doesn't really do anything to separate itself from the pack.

In a couple years, I would start marching them up Nt. Nittany like I do to my son whenever we visit for a game.

Until then, on game day, there are lots of fun kids games happening outside the stadium, and the pep rally is usually fun for a while. I always brought a football and tossed it around with my son outside the stafium as well. Just rambling around the tailgaters is always fun for my son.

Not to belabor an off-topic point, but the Creamery ice cream has historically been much better than other ice creams IMHO because they did not use preservatives or additives, and you can really tell the difference with ice cream that has additives (it has a more gummy texture). Creamery ice cream tasted very pure. Breyers was another ice cream that refrained from additives as well (their vanilla ice cream was just milk, sugar, cream, and vanilla).

However, I recall reading a few years back that the Creamery began using preservatives and additives and their ice cream, while still very good, does not have that pure taste to me. Breyers recently began using gums and additives as well. So I would say Creamery ice cream was once outstanding and better than most other ice creams, but since they started using fillers, it's still very good but does not stand out like it used to.

For instance, here are the ingredients for Peachy Paterno:

milk, cream, sugar, peaches, non-fat dry milk, nectarine puree, corn syrup solids, propylene glycol, mono esters, mono and diglycerides, cellulose gum, guar gum, carrageenan, vanilla, peach schnapps, vanilla, citric acid, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, yellow 5 & 6.

That would make sense. I'm not part of the old guard of Penn Staters, so maybe I only got to have the newer, "watered down" ice creams.

I started taking my kids up when they were about 9 or so (I have 17-year-old twin girls, one of whom will be a freshman up there this fall). Yeah, I don't know why I didn't start earlier. The amazing thing was that we did not need a huge variety of things to do. We come up Saturday morning for a noon game (we always go to the opener) and go straight to the game. Afterward, we would walk to the hub and then around the campus. We'd then go back, get the car, and drive to our hotel. Relax, swim, and then go back to College Ave for dinner (different place each year). We'd walk around town for a bit before or after. On Sunday morning, we'd go to the shrine for our annual picture, and then go see whichever stuff they were interested in looking at. We'd go to the Creamery at about noon or so and then leave for home. It has varied a little bit over the years, but stays pretty similar. They just love being on campus.

My son, who is just 15 months old, has already been up once and will be going every year.

That's because it's from Penn State, and therefore it is.
