Among those taking the field on Monday were 20 redshirt freshman and one true freshman participating in spring drills for the first time. Check out the gallery.

  • Zettel looks like he just beat someone up. Intimidating kid.

Zanellato should really benefit from Fitz. I work with computer monitors that are thicker than him.

  • For a guy that should be a high school senior, Jesse James looks pretty intimidating.

Hes been working hard and put on some good weight... Nowicki, Kerner, and Zettel need to get their weight up, and Z needs to live in the weightroom... Mangiro looks like he could add a little more, but he and Smith are def bright spots. Barnes looks like hes been working hard too...

haha Z looked like an average guy, who doesn't lift weights IMO, i think james may push for a lot of time

A TE pushing for time as a true freshman??? lol I said the same thing about Breneman and was met with hostility. But I agree with you. He may RS, he may not...

  • haha, considering noone took the job from andrew last year, fumble against bama, two penaltys back to back including one that took away silas redd's TD and a dropped pass in the endzone. I am ready to believe that a kid that is 6-7 rumored to have good hands, allegedly weighs 265, and has some decent athleticism...i will let my mind wonder about the possibilities of letting him get right into the action...only reason i think brenemen would have issues is his stature of 225, i just don't see him being a factor as a blocking tight end against some of those monsters we line up against

Theres a difference in what you said Breneman would do and what dipstick is saying James will do. That said Jesse looks big.

Dont forget with this switch in weight philosophies many times guys lose weight to start and rebuild. It'll be a long process.

Mangiro looks like a Wisniewski build, I like that. Dont need to be fat to be good.

Smith looks like a grown ass man, lets hope his conditioning and responsiveness keep improving.

    Barnes looks the part.

Matty Z needs to eat with the OL. Jesus.

Anthony Zettel scares the bejeezus out of me. He's looking the part of a 5 tech and nickel DT right now. He'll gain more as his body adjusts.

  • Barnes, Smith, Mangiro, Zettel, and James all looked bigger than what i expected.

  • Although there are definitely bright spots in there, I'm really interested in what these guys will look like before preseason camp starts. To get an entire summer with the new weightroom and Fitz2 should do wonders. I'm pleased with the progress so far, but really excited as to what we should see going into preseason camp.

Breneman is working his tail off with a renowned trainer. he will weigh more than that. Mark my words. And he will play the F (move TE). You do not need to be a big in line blocker. Watch, he will play. I am going on record as saying that.

Agreed 1000000 percent. Fitzy will have us ready to go and linemen looking as best as they can... Just imagine Mangiro and Smith a couple of years from now after 3 off-seasons with that man. biggrin

He has too much talent not to play. I think you need to watch out for Haplea this year though as a kid that may blow up.

I agree...i think that Haplea has a lot of potential, but wouldn't be realized if the old staff was here. He could be a decent threat for us in the passing game.

  • I think Barnes is going to get plenty of PT in the near future. He looks ready and Smith did too.

    PSUfan28

  • And I'll say this. Coming from his background and his HS film, which was limited, I did not expect this from James. Thats a solid 265, like I expect him to gain more weight. He may eventually grow into a giant TE or athletic OT.

But, the reports and the fact that he showed up in such amazing stature is amazing. I did not believe this kid, with that background, would see much time this year. Well f me if I aint an idiot on that one. Kid is working his arse off, and hopefully he makes a lot of people (we know who we are) who were skeptical (to say the least) about his offer and immediate ability eat some crow. I know I'm firing up the grill.

Which is why he'll play the "f" spot primarily as a freshmen, you can't redshirt a guy with his height, athleticism, hands, and speed..

Speaking of which, would have been interesting to see where Cabot would have been slotted in the QB mess.

  • I still get a chuckle that the best players (to some people) on our team of over 100+ are either still in high school or will be arriving in a couple of months. Eric Shrive was a stud, Mike Hull, etc, etc... There is more about being ready to play football as a freshmen than just your gamefilm and measurements. These kids need to transition to living away from home where they were a big fish in a small pond. Just getting though life as a freshmen is hard enough yet alone come in and contribute meaningful mintutes to a D1 top 20 team. Ask Paul Jones.....

I am basing this on how Obie described his TEs yesterday. Gilliam will be the starter at the Y TE and James (if he doesn't RS) will probably be his backup. James is not beating Gilliam out for the starting position, unless Gilliam is slowed by his knee injury. Gilliam was not an extra OT like Brady was in '94 but he did the job. He also show he could be a viable option as a receiver on the one catch for a big gain. Haplea and Royer will be at the F TE position. I am not sure where Haplea would be better suited for but It makes sense to start him out at the F and see if he can handle it. I am really curious where the other TE's on the roster end up. I have seen mix reports on Carter. I seen reports that suggest he will be more of a blocker and I have seen stuff about his potential athletic ability so is he an option for the F TE..
