Penn State to meet with Bill O'Brien according to ESPN

  • md154 said...

That's it exactly. After 60 years on staff....44 as the head coach....an incredible career and legacy created......

Penn State has decided that Bill O'Brien (who half of us have never heard of outside of a shouting match with Tom Brady) as THE guy to replace Joe Paterno. This is exactly how they had it planned all along.

"Joe....we want you to retire because we don't know how long Bill O'Brien is going to wait around for us to snatch him up."

It's as simple as this. ESPN has no freakin clue what is going on. So they are going to name drop any lesser known guy to continue to make us look like we can't get anyone good. They are going to milk the anti-psu thing as long as they can.

As I stated in all those posts, I don't by any means think he is going to be the guy. I was just telling you guys what was said.

I actually happen to be one of the few left who they they will make a strong hire.

Didn't mean to imply that's what YOU meant. I was speaking more to Adam S.

Joyner doesn't care what a bunch of board warriors think about O'Brien, and Schefter doesn't need to make stories up. For all we know Pegula got the down-low from the Kraft family and put the Patriots people in touch with the "search committee". The words of Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick may carry a bit more weight than others.

I'm starting to pull for O'Brien since so many seem to be dead set against him.

He'd better care because some of those board warriors are people who contribute money to the program. And if board warriors aren't happy, I can almost guarantee the bigger fish donors aren't happy either.

Schefter reports rumors - that's his job. Whether those rumors are true is entirely up for grabs. O'Brien's been in New England for two years and appears to be on his way out while wanting a HC position. You're assuming a LOT there, and I don't see where Pegula comes into this.

Every piece of logic says O'Brien won't be our next HC. And considering how badly his former teams in college failed when he was simply a coordinator, I'm not inclined to think he's even remotely on our list.

If Pegula was a fan of the NFL, or Joyner and Ira knew anything about the NFL relative to the Patriot, they would know that former NE assistants that flock from the coup FAIL miserably. Weis failed; Mangini; Crenell ... the list goes on and on. Nothing good ever happens hiring a NE assistant.

By the way, you can pull for O'Brien all you want if he is the play. I would feel sorry for him as well inheriting a mess and coming in to a hornets nest relative to a fan base that doesn't accept him immediately. That said, down the road, I will be p*ssed as hell if Joyner's ego in thinking he could do better - passed on guys like Mullen or Golden and we ended up getting worse - much worse.

Source: Penn St., Bill O'Brien to meet

Penn State is planning to meet Thursday with Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien, a source familiar with the process told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Penn State has identified O'Brien as the coach it wants to succeed Joe Paterno. O'Brien is in the last year of his contract as the Patriots offensive coordinator.

'Bill is focusing on another Super Bowl run,' O'Brien's agent, Joe Linta, said Sunday. 'However, if an NFL team or Penn State seeks permission from Bill Belichick, then Bill will speak to them.'

ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg and Brian Bennett write about all things Big Ten in the conference blog.

Penn State has been eyeing, scouting and honing in on the 42-year-old O'Brien throughout the past month, sources said. He fits the profile of the head coach Penn State has been seeking. O'Brien is well-schooled and has a mixture of experience at the college and pro levels. In an odd coincidence, O'Brien even attended and played football at Brown, as Paterno did.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick wouldn't comment on O'Brien after his team's win on Sunday.

'We were just trying to beat Buffalo today and we're moving on to whatever's next,' he said. 'I don't have anything to say about any other situation other than the New England Patriots.'

Penn State has attempted, and largely succeeded, to conduct its head-coaching search at the highest levels of secrecy. What can be confirmed is that, at the outset of the search, Penn State failed to land some of its top choices for the job. Former Colts coach Tony Dungy and Boise State coach Chris Peterson all received interest from the school, and each relayed to Penn State that he was not interested in leaving his current job at this time.

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman has also interviewed for the Penn State job, an NFL source said.

Information from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter and ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen was used in this report.

It actually seem fairly logical. Obrien meeting with PSu today, players and coaches meeting with Ira and Joyner seperately tomorrow,........

While this might not make people happy, it is the most logical situation. Are we STILL believing Gruden? Or Saban? Or Miles? Or Mucak? Or Golden, or Shiano? Guys whos season have been done for 3 week? Anyone else, and the deal would and should be done.

Not saying it is Obrien, but it makes a lot of sense.

    Logic????

Which reporter or media member has been on the mark thus far? Can you name one? Have you seen anyone confirm this interview...OBrien, his agent...anyone? It could be happening, but what logic can we use as the media hasn't gotten near this one yet.

Actually yes, the media has been on the mark lately. Obrien....seems to be true. Confirmed by ESPN, CBS, and NFL.com. Roman has been confirmed as an interview in November, which the media reported and was confirmed by Comm, The run at Petersen, confirmed by Comm, they got that one correct,

If the media is so off, who do you honestly believe it is? Are you actually holding out for one of the above guys? I wish it were true to.....but this is likely what we are left with. Slim pickins....

On the other side, what logic can we use that any"insider" has this near correct?

    Your guess?

How was the run at Petersen confirmed by comm? His source was originally unsure of the name, but threw out a guess and it happened to be Petersen. Last I checked, I believe there were one or two people who discounted the O'Brien to PSU rumor, including Charlie Casserly. So there's mixed rumors about O'Brien - which ones are you claiming to be true?

I don't think it's true at all because 1) most of the rumors seem to be coming from O'Brien's side, 2) they are coming out right when NFL head coaching searches are starting (thus giving those teams motivation to go after O'Brien hard if they think PSU is that interested).

As far as the logic to confirm what the insiders say, check out my "Finding hope in the timeline" thread.

I really wish we didn't have to spell out basic logical points and conclusions so often. Can't wait for the coach to be named.

    Be careful.

    2) He did go after a Michigan alum....(his only saving grace in these eyes personally)...so some may take the kick just for that

    lol

And seriously I am with you. To specify, on it not being O'Brien...certainly not letting any foot near the turn tables and microphone lol

true on Petersen, the other info on Obrien was from days ago.....the new news today I believe. As another poster said, Shefter has no reason to make up info.....he is usually dead on. Wheres theres enough smoke, theres fire. They denied the report the other day, but its back today and they also have mentioned the meeting will take place today. Thats pretty specificinfo.

Also, Sean said he "thinks " the announcement will come next week. Also not confirmed. To relate it to Seans info...he also said they were meeting with the players and coaches seperately on Friday, which would make sense if they were to make a hire today. Why meet with them if there is nothing to report, like you said in your other thread.

I am holding out hope as you are. Lets hope we are cheers-ing next week to a great hire.

Who confirmed O Brien other than the media? Roman said he was contacted a MONTH ago...so it was a month after the fact. I don't have a guess, but I can't believe this report. His agent hasn't even confirmed it. O Brien hasn't confirmed it. We have no idea on what is going on and it has been that way for 5+ weeks...now all of a sudden the media is on top of it? Really??? It's possible for sure, but I'm not buying it. Dave Jones said MM was the clear #1 just two weeks ago. How can you sit there and say the media has been remotely close thus far? Maybe this is the time they get it, but the track record hasn't been all that good.

I said they have been right in the past week or so......and Munchak was our number 1...he just didnt want the job. Said he was contacted. Reports down here in TN said he even reached out to former teammates to see about coordinating positions.

All has been speculation, but they did get Roman right, regardless of the timing, even though EVERYONE on here said it was BS, and a smokscreen. Like I said, where theres enough smoke, there fire. Shefter is rarely wrong. I am holding out hope he is wrong in this case

General Managers and personnel departments are as or more responsible for their teams NFL championships as coaches. How did Belichick do his first stint in Cleveland and how much did they improve (as the Baltimore Ravens) when Ozzie Newsome took over as Director of Player Personnel and eventually GM? (You are welcome Brian Billick, former Vikings offensive guru who coached a team known for their defense.) How much did the Patriots improve with Belichick given final say over personnel moves for the Patriots? How much better will the Cleveland Browns look in 3-4 years with Holmgren at the helm? How bad have the Cowboys been since Jimmy Johnson left Jerry Jones' side?

Good coordinators take the bad jobs because they are typically the only ones that become available.
Look at where the NE assistants have ended up:
Crennel and Mangini to post expansion Cleveland (bad situation)
Groh and Mangini to the Jets (bad for Groh / bad when Pennington went out for Mangini)
McDaniels to the Broncos (bad situation)
Schwartz to the Lion who are suddenly improving without Millen as GM (bad situation now good)
Saban to the Dolphins until he got smart and took the Bama job (bad situation and now good)
Ferentz to Iowa (all credit to Ferentz)
Weis to Notre Dame and now Kansas (bad situation / bad coach / bad scheme / going to be bad again)

There are a lot of great coaches out there that could prosper in an environment like Penn State.

  • Quick and honest question and I know absolutely nothing about PSU's interest in O'Brien, but for the people who believe that these rumors of O'brien to PSU have legs....Why would this be made public info? I mean doesn't it seem a little strange that PSU has been extremely secretive regarding their search, but yet they would allow this to leak or that they would be so worried to keep everything so hush, hush but they allow the real candidates to speak freely to the media? Just doesn't seem to fit this search.

If you don't think that PSU has been throwing the media for joy ride after joy ride through out this search I can assure you that there are quite a few media folks extremely unhappy for being led to believe info that hasn't been true.

Without getting into the merits of whether O'Brien would be a good hire, if PSU hires someone of his profile, they need to leak the info now so the fans are prepared for it. If Erickson and Joyner get up on the stage next week and catch everyone by surprise, there will be riots.
