  • So why doesn't he have a offer? His dad played in the NFL for 6 season he is Rank the 14th best CB in the nation and after I watch his tape I can tell you he's good. So what am I missing?

    Thats 13 different positions right there and 15 scholarships to fill those spots. Obviously some of those positions require multiple players. I dont envy this staffs task of trying to piece together a depth chart over the next few years.

    I can understand why they would want to wait on kids.

  • My question is..Are we going to be able to pull a "better/higher star" prospect elsewhere at this position?? If we are offering low 3 star cbs from from Georgia..why not someone who on the surface seems to want PSU more than they want him at this point. The kid can play at this level and with the coaching we have, can be a success. I want kids WHO WANT PENN STATE!

    I don't know if the staff would consider something like I am about to post, but I think its a way they can work around an early offer, where the prospect commits, then down the road they find another player that is a better fit, or the prospect doesn't perform as well at camps etc... Again, not sure how "ethical" this is, or if the staff would go down this road, but with the 15 limit, they may be forced to do something they normally would not do and get creative to make sure they are getting the most out of every incoming class.

    For example, say they are to offer a prospect, use Truitt for sake of argument, and he accepts early as a JR and is on board for 2014. However, for whatever reason, he under performs as a SR, or the staff knows they can get a commitment from a player that is an upgrade, etc, whatever the case may be... They could then go back to the prospect, and tell him his offer is for a gray shirt and he would not be able to enroll until 2015. This way, technically they still keep their word as an offer to the prospect, but essentially tell him to look around and find another fit. If he leaves, no harm.... However, if he decides to stick around and wait till the following year, if for whatever reason, one of the 15 signees from 2104 don't work out, or are unable to enroll (say a Darrell Givens situation), we have a player on the back burner to move into the class and still take the full 15. Worst case you lose a spot in the next class... but at least this scenario buys you another year, gives you a little more flexibility and gives the prospect the option of sticking around or finding a better fit.

    Not saying this is what would or should happen with Truitt... In fact ( not that it matters), I believe he is an excellent prospect. Seems like a very solid kid and would be a great ambassador for the 2104 class. Plus, he is a hell of a ball player

    Thinking about this a bit more, this is also a scenario that could be effective for a guy with an injury, Allen should be good to go by next season, but say he had a set back, or another committed prospect gets hurt their SR year or like AB got hurt in the off season... they could then convert the offer to a gray shirt for that kid, and bump him back to the next class. Then if something comes up and a spot opens, move him back to make sure we are filling all 15 each year.

    I am not in favor of jerking a kid around.
    if we offer a scholarship, its a scholarship.
    if we tell the kid, his offer is only if he agrees to grey shirt, im ok with it.
    But to give him scholarship, accept his commitment, then jerk him around in attempt to get better players, hoping he will take a gray shirt, i dont like it.
    we keep our word at psu. that is what we teach.
    we are not the sec, we are not usc, we are not nebraska, .....
    I say Nebraska b/c that is what they did to a kid from McGloins high school just a few years ago. the kid committed to Nebraska real early, got hurt during his senior year, & one month before NSD, they told him to look elsewhere.
    We dont do that. If we offer, its an offer.

    It helps when we get guys like Allen who are RB/WR...

    Yeah, I agree with you Jim, absolutely. But at the same time, a "commitment" is not really any kind if commitment from the prospects. They are free and able to change their minds at any point before they sign. So though I agree with you, and this is certainly not something PSU should make a habit, given the sanctions, we may have to watch out for ourselves just a little bit more in some instances than we had to in the past.

    Maybe its a caveat they should include with a lot of offers,or maybe more so specifically regarding injury.. if a commit is injured, etc and may need some extra time to rehab, they understand they still have an offer, and still have a scholarship available, but they may need to take a grey shirt, while the finish rehab. Like Glenn Carson did in the 2009 class.
