Penn State recruiting costs

  • Interesting look at recruiting expenses per school. Penn State ranks 6th in the Big Ten.

Edit: Correction 6th instead of 7th

  • I hope we are number 1 next year.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

  • That 500 mile radius we are so used to, will expand.......................GREATLY next year!!!

Watch the expense account grow by "leaps and bounds!"

Idk if we'll be #1, but I guarantee we'll be much higher than 7.

Didn't do any official calculations, but it looks like PSU is the only school in the top 50 that had about a 60/40 split between men's and women's recruiting expenses. Every other school was closer to 70/30 or even 80/20. Pretty cool if you ask me.

  • There is NO WAY that we should not be in the overall top 10. Period. Can't wait for that to change with the new staff. Just think about where we were from a recruiting standpoint for a second, and where we will be with this new staff. Im stoked for the 2013 class. Suck it Liar

  • Penn State ranks 6th. Another factor that should be considered is the varsity sport count at each school. Penn State appears to be fiscally responsible when considering this factor. Also consider Penn State's success in the Learfield Sports Directors Cup.

    1. Michigan 27
    2. Illinois 21
    3. Nebraska 21
    4. Ohio State 35
    5. Minnesota 23
    6. Penn State 29
    7. Purdue 18
    8. Michigan State 25
    9. Iowa 24
    10. Indiana 24
    11. Wisconsin 23
    12. Northwestern 19

We were behind Minnesota... Minnesota... We have the 2nd highest grossing football program in America. 6th is too low.

  • Will this makes sense actually. A program would have to recruit year round to be near the top...

  • rmj, 2013,

By all rights, Penn State should be much closer to the top due to their goal set for the football program, everyone's cash cow. I'd love to have an ear on the inside of budget meetings. All aside, when money meets results, Penn State looks great.

  • I have a feeling this will change and B'OB will have to travel.

We demand better. And now we have the staff that will go out and do it...

  • Does this include the under the table money O$U is shelling out for recruits?

    Olinepride

  • The idea that we should be spending more on recruiting is simply stupid. Penn State is a Public university, with a mandate to provide an education to the maximum number of interested students - and public funding that was already negligible is being cut even more.

Sad the rush to throw the Grand Experiment on a junk heap. What's more important? Graduation rates or the amount that is spent on recruiting? For me the answer is obvious.

Because the school and state lose money on Penn State Football, right?

Uhh the money that is spent on recruiting is the money that is generated from the football program.

Hence, one could argue, more money spent on recruiting, better players, better results on the field, more money because of a better program...Hell spending more money on recruiting easily EASILY could correlate to a bigger profit...

You have to spend money to make money.

  • Check out the cost per recruit, because the schools vary greatly in the number of varsity teams. Marquette ... really?

The original post was uninformed as they seem to not acknowledge the self supporting facet of PSU sports. No state or tuition funds enter into the sports programs. Given that lack of understanding I would not consider the remainder of the post to hold much of enlightenment.

Our recruiting as well as a lot of other facets of the football program are going to change with a new HC and staff. We hope the changes will be positive. Recruiting is one area that is open to major changes in territory and total staff commitment. The potential to improve recruiting is apparent if only from the increased geographical area now considered by the new staff. That expanded territory will come with a higher cost. That is to be expected and welcomed for the future improvement of our squad. As football drives the sports income and funding of all but one other sport (mens basketball) it should/must have more funding dedicated to its recruiting efforts. The financial health of the football program and its ability to drive the funding of the other sports is vital to the entire AD program. It would be short sighted to curtail recruiting efforts in any way.

  • Nice overall look, but as others have said, it's still to broad to make any real conclusions. I'd love to see a breakdown by sport, year, etc.
