Penn State ranks high after visit for Ryne Rankin

  • So far BOB is talking the talk and also walking the walk. He came out talking about student athletes and continuing the tradition of what Joe built here. This kid screams of exactly those qualities. He wants kids that will fit, not just a bunch of stars and I commend his effort thus far. He wants to meet these kids first and offer them personally. He has given me no reason not to trust him. Hope Ryne ends up in blue & white!

Just your opinion or you think the staff wont take both? I could see Deeb inside and Rank outside with his athleticism.

I think they are essentially the same player. A run-stopping ILB. Top notch athleticism for tackle to tackle play and very good instincts, but may not be the complete athletes to play in space. Definitely have places on the defense we are running, and a type of guy Vandy loves to load up the box with. But in a class where we need LBs, these guys seem to be pidgeon-holed to the ILB spot.

Jmo of course. Feel free to disagree. Of course I have yet to see all of Rankin's film, just going by the bit I saw and triangle numbers.

Rankins film is impressive he has a quick hop step which Vandy can work with but he plugs the hole and drives backs back. Theres only a few plays in coverage but based on a few of them I could see the potential to play some outside he can definitely find and bring down the ball carrier.

    Cool cool.

Put it this way, my opinion is we take one. If Vandy wants us to have both, I am MORE than comfortable with that. Vandy, Hixon, LJ, and Mac are guys I have learned not to doubt. And that's two more than the last staff.

  • Add Jermaine Grace. A Fla. trifecta.
Also, haven't heard much on Zayd Issah lately.

  • We take either Deeb or Rankin.

Doubt Issah is that high on the staffs board IMO.

You know, I thought the same thing when I was at the gym last night and saw a couple people wearing CD High football shirts.

Haven't seen any film on Issah. If he has good speed, possible move to safety?

Doesn't have the hips to play safety.

  • Rankin and Deeb are very different linebackers. Deeb is an ILB, Rankin is a weakside OLB. We have a lot more offers out to OLB than ILB, likely because Wartman and Kline are both slotted for the interior. You can take both of the two Florida 'backers in this class, IMO.

If Rankin's a legitimate 6-1, he'd be near the top of my board for OLBers. Kid can flat out play.

    Completely disagree.

    Rankin is 100% a ILB.

You're entitled to that belief, but he isn't a natural block shedder. He doesn't have the natural size to take on interior lineman, and his film doesn't indicate great ability to blow up lineman and shed blocks around the LOS. I don't really see Deeb being especially adept at that either, but I don't think Deeb is a very good prospect generally.

Rankin does read and react well, gets to space quickly and makes plays in space very well. That suggest weakside OLB to me. If you want to see what an ILB highlight reel looks like, go look at Bowman's high school film. Totally different kind of player than Rankin.

    I always appreciate your faith.

As for which position he would play. Personally I don't see any reason why he couldn't play inside or outside. He's certainly quick enough, changes direction well, plays well in space, nice feel for the flow of the play. There's nothing about his film, to me at least, that would indicate he can only play inside.
