Penn State extends offer to DB

Penn State extended an offer today to a cornerback who has been waiting to hear from the Nittany Lions since camping with them in June.

  • IIRC, he was the kid with great measurables and camp performances but plays against poor competition. If so, hope he joins the class.

Did our staff decide they like him better than Golden maybe Sean?

  • Wonder what they saw that UMass and UConn didn't see in this kid? Our guys are really great at this camp offer stuff.

Not happy about this offer being sent out. PSU needs to do better. I hate camp offers. This staff throws them out like free candy instead of working on better talents. Sweet, PSU will beat out UNH for this one.

  • Lowest hanging fruit... our staff loves to pick it.

  • We must be in REALLY great shape with Reeves and Cox.

  • I watched his tape and I just don't see it. I hate ripping on kids cause if I were him, I can't imagine how excited I would be but from watching, there is a reason he doesn't have any big offers and that's casue he just isn't fast enough He doesn't pull away from the competition he playing against which is not good at all. We are obviously not in a good situation with DB recruiting. Anyway, watch for yourself, here is his film.

  • The thing is, he's a DB...take a look at our depth chart. Take a look at our other targets...

I'm not happy about it, but I understand it. Reeves, Cox, Golden, Tyson...I mean, who else is back there? Big time recruits, don't want to play in a BBDB coverage, where you play 10 yards off the LOS.

  • He is a fluid athlete, but he just doesn't look all the impressive in terms of speed or ball skills. I really do not like this offer at this time. As others have said, you could wait until the end to offer. I hate banging on a kid because I believe that there are plenty of under-the-radar kids that are very good prospects, but I just don't see it here. I hope this kid comes in and proves us all wrong.

  • Or maybe the kid flashed some outstanding talent during camp. I, for one, think it's absolutely ridiculous to pull out a big, wide brush and automatically paint every offer given at camp as "low-hanging fruit." I don't have the time for a major research project on camp offers, but I'll bet some fine Nitts--and a few duds--have been recruited over the years through camp.

This kid camped at UConn and UMass and didn't get an offer. Enough said.

Camp offers are much like NFL combine warriors. If they kids on field performance isn't worthy of a scholarship then he shouldn't get one.

When you are competing against New Hampshire for a recruit, that recruit is low hanging fruit.

  • Not loving the offer, but we need DB's and I'm sure this kid has some ability. We can't nitpick with recruits at the DB position, we need bodies.

You're right, we do need bodies but just having bodies won't make you a very good football team. It's no wonder we get lit up like a christmas tree anytime we play a team that can actually throw the ball. When you don't even have a really good highlight tape against New Hampsure talent, that is not a guy that will see the field at Penn State unless he is just now hitting puberty. Secondly, I hope to god he proves me and everyone else doubting him wrong.

Yea I totally agree, but I'd rather have this kid than no one.

I was hoping we were going to get Cox, Reeves, Tyson, and Golden as our DB's and call it a day.

Do we know if this is a commitable offer or if it's possibly just a back-up plan in case Golden chooses elsewhere? Could also be them now wanting 3 corners and 5 DB's total? (Kiley + the aforementioned 4).

One could argue that the staff now wants him over Golden as evidenced by sending Golden home (I certainly doubt the reasoning but the part of wanting Kiley more could be true as evidenced by the offer).

Golden wasn't really sent home. He was just told that the staff wouldn't be on campus so it would best to come back at another time. I still think we'd rather have Golden over this new kid,

DEON BUTLER was the 1st "fine Nitt" to pop into my mind. Don't know enough about Jake Kiley to have a fair opinion. Not impressed with the film though.

Yes, the blind squirrel approach. If someone throws out 50 camps offers, a few have to turn out to be good. Fact is, this staff is lazy. They would rather take verbals from second and third tiered prospects than have to work for the best talent they can get. He will be the fourth kid in this class that normally wouldn't sniff an offer from PSU and probably more third tiered kids coming. Sorry, I don't like beating out UNH for a player. People who try to talk themselves into saying this offer could be fine have officially lowered their expectations. Nothing against the kid, but this staff takes far too many chances on lower tiered kids. If staff was good at developing players, then ... but this staff ain't Iowa, or VPI. It develops players in a few positions, but certainly not close to what it should.
