  • For the folks who think he's never going back to QB, check out the projected depth chart for next year. He'll have to get reps at QB in the spring. He's the clear 2nd string QB in the spring, has to be. One last shot to win the job. You never know.

Fine and all to say, but would you put money on it? Odds aren't in his favor and that is the simple truth.

Money on what? That he'll take reps at QB in the spring? Yes, I'll put money on that. If Bench is healthy and Hack stays committed I think it's highly unlikely he'll win the starting job. Highly unlikely. But it's certainly not impossible. Personally I'd like to see Hack redshirt and Bench start with Jones backing him up next year.

Agreed gem. We don't have to start PJ to keep him at QB and play him. If Hack passes him up we can cross that bridge then, but we absolutely need to have two QBs that are not true freshman on the depth chart next year.

I think we need to sign a JUCO QB in any event to add depth at QB. If he can enroll in January 2013, he'd still count against the 2012 class.

Him taking reps in the spring is cosmetic IMO. Him starting is what I was talking about. It's not going to happen, but people need to talk about it I guess. Kid seems like a great kid and with his size maybe the staff is doing him a favor since QB'ing beyond college doesn't seem like a reality.

  • Just want to point out that Jones is still technically on the depth chart at QB.

I definitely wouldn't put money on him starting. If Bench is healthy and nothing funky happens then he clearly has the inside track, and I'm happy about that. It's hard to know exactly what we have in Bench, but I'm cautiously optimistic (liked his senior film, has practiced well for a true freshman, son of coach, mobile). He obviously doesn't have the pure physical talent that Hack has, but he might be a very good fit for this system. We'll see. Jones still has a shot, but he needs to dedicate himself in a way he probably never has, and that can be tough for a college kid.

  • JMO, why I think PJ ends up at TE with a package at QB to be the emergency 3rd QB. I agree that PJ will get snaps at QB in the spring, but I think him getting PT (and the best position for that is the fTE) is the only way that we keep him. Only having Bench and Hack as the schollie QBs would be horrible, but we are playing by a different set of rules due to the transfer exception.

I guess it comes down the $1 million dollar question for each person...do you believe PJ sticks if he is just the backup QB (with the possibility of a package of plays)?

For me, I just don't see PJ sitting around to be the backup for two years at PSU. This offseason the wolves are going to be at the door, and it might be tough to tune them out, especially if Bench is named the starter.

  • I think people got off subject pretty quick here. The original poster asked if PJ would be giv en the opportunity to play QB again. That answer is simply yes because they won't let Bench and some run -on's be the only qb's in Spring Ball. Now he might also work as a TE during that time but he will get the opportunity to play QB again, thus answering the original question asked.
