  • This may have been discussed before, but has there been any word on if Jones will be given a shot at qb next year? He will only be a junior, so if we had Jones and Bench at qb, we could redshirt Hackenburg. If Jones learned the offense, he has the arm and movement to beat out Bench. This is assuming Jones stays, of course.

  • I'm worried about our QB depth, but I think the transition is going to be permanent (JMO).

  • I would assume his days of playing QB at PSU are about over, unless an emergency occurs this season that forces him into action. Give the impending signing of Hack, and the surprising play of Bench so far in practices, Jones may have to look elsewhere if he wants to play QB.

I have to agree, I could see him as an emergency third QB (some sort of "wild cat" package)...if we can't add a JC QB.

  • I would've loved to have seen him get a shot in an actual game.

He had a myriad of shots to get into an actual game and blew every single one.

Whether it was a lack of focus on academics coming into college or not being able to grasp the playbook or not impress in practice - it's no ones fault but Pauls. But don't feel bad, kid will get out of college debt free with a ton of alumni connections

  • I think he'd be wise to stay as TE in BoB's offense. With his size and athletic ability (and a good sesason next year) plus BoB's pedigree, he might just have a shot at the league. Sadly, it seems the complexities of the QB position are too much.

  • I hope he gets his chance at QB in the Spring. I think people are overblowing BIG TIME what Bench may be able to do and I think they will want to redshirt Hack if he still comes to Penn State.

Plus who would be the competition for Bench in the spring?

Probably not a good idea to just hand the keys to the offense to Bench.

And we all have to remember, Bench was going to go to Rice, not USC or Texas. I know, I know coming out of High School doesn't mean much these days as to potential but he was in SEC Land and was going to Rice.

Great kid, great attitude, great passion but not sure if his talent will match up at this level.

I don't think anything is being overblown. He is in his 3rd year and lost his job to a true frosh. He enrolled early and lost his job to Bolden who arrived in the summer. I'm not really sure how true this is, but I think it has to do with knowing where to go with the ball and the timing. We need to hope that Hack does come and we find another good walkon to provide depth at QB. Where Bench was going is irrelevant as HS offers mean crap and that doesn't determine PT. If it did, Bolden and PJ would have been the QB.

IMO, he won't be moved back unless there is a major emergency. There is a reason why he hasn't played a single snap under center in college. He didn't under the last regime and even with the depth being a problem at QB, he has been moved to TE by BOB. BOB knows we have a major issue at QB now and moving forward and still moved him. Unless we have the second coming of MROB who was like a yo-yo during his collegiate career, I don't think its in the cards that he plays under center next year. I would assume BOB and crew will try to snag a JC QB in this class, even if Hack sticks.

  • I agree with most of you on the topic. He had every opportunity to come in and start as a true freshman, but shot himself in his foot over and over again when it came to his opportunities. He is a huge guy anyway at 260lbs so he fits the mold of a prototypical TE, but no way he will ever become the next Daryll Clark.

  • Because you have to have some kind of c ompetition for Bench. You can't just hand the keys over to a SOPH (A wasted RS by the way) who has played very little or meaningful snaps. Maybe I am wrong and there are others on the team who could compete with him but as far as I know if Hack still comes it isn't going to be until the two a days anyhow.

Plus I still believe in the kid. Yes he has had a lot more downs than ups and yes he seems to have gotten passed by Bench, but I still believe in him as a QB.

    PSUDOG

  • I agree this presents a problem, especially if the plan is to redshirt Hack next year (which should 100% be the case). That means we would only have Bench on the depth chart (I am not sure what class MacGregor is in, but it feels to me he has been with the team since I graduated in '03). We need a second QB, it should be Jones if only to keep Hack redshirted. Not to mention the fact that TE has become our deepest position overnight and we do not need him there.

You understand they are moving him away from the position. I doubt they will "make up" a competition for Bench with PJ in the spring. So in essence he may get the keys handed over to him in the spring, but he'll have to turn them back in and fight for them again in August. PJ is a great kid, but I think he is done at QB minus some injuries.

  • I understand that on September 24, 2012 that yes, Paul Jones has been switched to another position. I also understand that there was an article in the Trib a few weeks back when it happened where he said he hopes that he gets his shot to play QB in the spring and that for right now he will do whatever he can in order to help the team. I also underswtand because of the ***hole Mark Emmert that some kids may have a little more negotiating room when it comes to things like Spring Ball.

Plus I really believe Hack needs to redshirt. It will give him hopefully two years to play for the big one whcih in this case is a Big Ten Title and a BCS birth.

I also do not think it is possible to go through a Spring Ball Season with really only 1 QB. So what you are saying is they have Bench. If Bench hurts himself the first day does the team not have another QB for Spring Ball?

Just looked it up, they could have this guy if Bench goes down: Venuto, Garrett.

By the way, what if Hack doesn't sign? Or what if he does sign is he still under the sanctions where he could get out of his LOI with no penalty?

If Hack goes elsewhere, PSU is screwed regardless for the most part. Maybe PJ does go back to QB, but if your not raising an eyebrow after Bench beat him him out in 5 weeks...I doubt anything I can say will matter. I'm not opposed to PJ, but the writing on the wall is pretty big and clear right now in terms of pecking order and who will play there.

It's his first year in the playbook... Plenty of time, and eligibility to learn the playbook... I agree with the others... Bench needs competition. I wouldn't be surprised if they duke it out... If Bench wins, no one should be surprised. BUT there still has to be a competition in spring.

He couldn't grasp the other playbook , let alone pass his classes.

Still need competition for the spring. And they are the only 2 QBs on the roster. He had to focus on his academics to get it done, and he did. He is fine with that now... Why bring up a mistake he made? And KEEP bringing it up. Playing playstation instead of studying has nothing to do with his abilities on the field or in the playbook. He has been a good student since he has been fine. Everything BOB says in interviews is that he needs to be more consistent in his throws/accuracy (there are videos looking in on practice that show the same thing). He needs reps. And IMO he will get them with Bench in the spring.

keep him at tight end, antonio gates style, then u can always use him as a trick play or do where he gets the ball then bombs it to A rob

Who gets reps in the spring to challenge Bench and create competition if thats the case? I just don't think that there is any way that PJ doesn't at least challenge for the job. After that, probably back to TE. But he will at least get one last shot (there is no one else on the roster to give Bench competition). Hack won't be in until the rest of the freshmen are.

Outside of your first couple "..."'s, this is an important note to make for everyone that is saying no. And its why I think he will have reps there and at TE this spring.
