PSU fans need to start treating each other with respect

  • I know bama is coming in and I agree they should be treated well but PSU tailgating is getting to the point of so much disrespect that I am looking to get rif of my tickets for the year. My daughter was part of the half time show with alot of other girls between 8-15. Alot of parents were talking about how stupid tailgaters were acting at 8 am. We pulled in at 7:20 and was next to multiple sites with parents and college kids tailgating together and they were for the most part acting like idiots. I am all for drinking and having a goodtime but even when I was in college I knew who was around me . The language and actions were insane for 7 am verse a 1 aa team.

Even in the so called family friendly area that some of the parents went to they said there was no special rules or actions. Parents if you are tailgating wioth your college kids think about how you would appreciate the language and comments being thrown around. I almost poped one a hole guy for making a comment to my daughter who is 10 about how in 8 years she would be legal. The parents were smart enough to grab the kid and walk him away from me before i got my hands on him. PSU tasilgating sucked for me this year and I willnow be getting rid of season tickets.

I am not looking for a sober time but have a little pride and no who is around you.

I totally agree with you that what you described is amazingly egregious. But this is not a problem that is isolated just to PSU or college football tailgating. You can go to any public place where alcohol is mixed with a large congregation of individuals and you are going to have a few rotten apples spoil the bunch. Mix in the natural immaturity of younger drinkers with less self-control and it will agitate the situation even more.

It is a shame, that others can impose their will upon anothers experience in a bad manner... But I see no way to reverse this ever increasing trend.

  • I am assuming you were tailgating in the lot 12 area, if so my suggestion is to go to a different lot next time. You are dealing with college age and mid 20 year olds, I am not sure why you expected anything different.

The 8 years thing is unacceptable, period. But I'm sorry the language thing happens at every single big time sporting event....

Agreed, it was flat out ignorant. The age of consent in Pennsylvania is actually sixteen.

(edit: yeah, it's a messed-up thing to say, and whoever did is seriously screwed up, but this was entirely tongue-in-cheek)

Yeah said by someone who does not have a daughter. I

know I was not alone in my comments. I usually park benind ag building but brother was in town and he is a former blue band guy so I parked in the area he tailgates at. I am not sure if it is 1`2 or not. That being said I have tailgated as a teenagere, while in school, as a grad with small kids and now as they get older and I have never acted this way and have always been smart enough to know who was around. Did I swear YES and if I saw kids I tried to curve it. Bottom line I know all major sporting events it is likie this. That bein g said anyone who has kids opr had kids know that it really sucks when you can no longer share your passion with your kids. Remeber I had parents from the so called family firendly area that had the same problem. I am not dumb enough to bring kids to Bama game but 7 am vs 1aa school this was suppose to be a safe game for them to come to.

Dude, you can talk all about being an adult, and I hear you, but your grammar is just hideously bad.

  • Your best bet is to get over it. There are assholes everywhere, it's not an exclusive trait to PSU fans. This happens everywhere, it sucks it happened to you.

That's about all you can really say.

I hear you and I understand that this goes on everywhere but the fact is that it use to be a fun event with friends and family. I am not alone with people who no longer bring family. It may be a reality but it sucks because that is one of those things that made me fall in love with PSU. Besides watching it on tv I really have no urge to have my kids in that enviroment. It may happen everywhere BUT it did not always happen at PSU. Now it seems to be the norm.

    Trock56

  • It's only a matter of time before we get trolled by an OSU fan for saying "It happens everywhere".

I get why people say it, but it isn't like that really makes it any better. Nobody has ever sounded smarter by using some "Big boy" words. It doesn't bother me, but it isn't like anybody asked you to say gosh-darn. We're really sittitng here having an argument about the right to drop the F-bomb in front of kids. Turrble

    Just my two cents.

  • Trock, as a father of a 10 and 7 year old, I completely agree.

I had the opposite experience at a Phillies NLCS game vs. the Giants last year. The group of Phillies fans behind us were drinking, but didn't swear all game intentionally because of the kids. When my wife took the kids for snacks, they dropped the f-bomb a few times "since the kids are away". They spent the game trying to keep my kids excited by saying things like "If Jimmy Rollins homers, no school for you kids for a week!"

Philly gets a bad rap usually, but I was impressed with Phils fans. It is a shame that some folks can't tone it down in front of a young child. Sorry about your experience...

  • i was at a wedding this weekend and teenagers were frequently cursing in church and lacked respect in many of the same ways you're describing trock. me and my girlfriend discussed it on the way home about how disappointing the young generation of americans are developing. i feel that many parents are dropping the ball on how these kids are raised, no humility

  • agree trock. Wouldn't you want that respect also given to the players too or is ok to be disrespectful to them? Whether it's there in person or online, not sure how poor behavior simply can be excused. I'm not talking about being critical either, but just the grade school like name calling that most adults wouldn't do in person as it's pretty disrepectful IMO.

yeah a little diffrent. I have no isses with non profane name calling. X is a simple way to sum up three sentences. But if you are comparing college kids saying to a 10 year old girl that she will be legal in 8 years to calling a qb x you are pathetic and do not have a clue.

I agree I am amazed how people come up to his at dinners and say how well behaved our kids are. I always say no reason to say thanks that is how I was raised and my kids no better than to act up. I do not care how old my kids get I will always remind them of proper behavior and let them know when they are being an idiot. Lajollalion if your parents are on this board maybe they will let you know you are an idiot for comparing x to college guys making comments to a 10 year old girl.

I tried to get to him but his friends and parents pulled him away and ran up the lot before I could get my hands on him.

  • Actually trock I have two kids of my own and my parents pretty much taught me wrong is wrong. In fact it was made pretty clear to me is that you shouldn't say anything about someone you wouldn't say to their face. Since you are talking about respect, I would assume that means you do it all all aspects of yor life, but apparently it's only when it's convenient or impacts your children. I don't blame you one bit for being upset as you have every right to be. I wasn't comparing the two, just talking about respect in general which apparently isn't across the board.

If it makes you feel better I do call him (the player formerly known as X)and now called the q who makes stupid decisions and has a noodle armwho thinks he is an elite div 1 gunslinger qb. to a few psu staff and coaches. I would say it to him if he asked what I thought about him.

This was the biggest problem our fans had with the Penn State fans who made the trip down to Tuscaloosa. A lot of the fans who made the trip down just completely trashed their tailgating spots and then left the trash for our fans to pick up. One of our fans posted pictures on BOL and you would've thought a tornado had literally ripped through the area.

Sorry to hear that. Let's hope the idiots got it out of the system the first week and bam a fans are treated well

  • I went to Alabama and had a great time down there (besides the game). I wish and hope that their fans get treated with equal respect and courtesy, but I know that will not be the case. All I can do is go out of my way to welcome the Bama fans and thank them for making the trip.

  • Trock, sorry your daughter had to be witness to that kind of behavior. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I took my 10 yr old daughter to her first game this weekend as well and we had an amazing time. Of course, we parked at our spot and didn't bother tailgating. I took her to the creamery for an ice cream and we walked around campus some before we headed up to the game. If you're sitting around tailgating you should really expect this kind of behavior. Not saying it is right but I liken it to if you took your daughter into a bar room. Same kind of environment only multiplied by 1000.
