But isn't it true that if you are down 'for a while', you will still get the escape if you eventually get to your feet and break loose? I think it would be better if you had 10 seconds to get the escape; otherwise, you were controlled too long and you don't get a point.

The problem is many kids are uncomfortable or the competition is just tht good (unless you're Dake against everyone but DT) that they're more comfortable on their feet than exhausting themselves trying to position themselves on top to score more points.

These days more kids want to score combos, get a takedown that enables them to tilt or get a pin because its easier and less exhaustive to force a scramble and come out in a favorable position.

It's just more work to get in position when starting on top and working to get back points or pins at this level.

Just wait til NCAA tourney, you'll see better wrestling and why 1 pt is worthy for an escape.

Ex. Guy A gets a takedown, up 2-0, guy B works for 58 seconds to get free, that's one hell of a fight to get back to neutral and a well earned and deserved point. Make more sense?

No, not necessarily, you could ge ridden out. If you do, the guy on top gets another point for riding time if its at least 1 min or more. And if you don't get out, you could also get turned for back points or a pin.

Really, it's just the top guys fault for giving up a point that easy. Like I said before, kids are looking for more combos these days because the competition is just that stiff on this level. At the NCAAs is where you will see the true finishes and well fought points and why these little points matter.

  • McD stays at 1, but Nico has closed the gap by a lot. Conaway coming in at 14th at 133, previously UR. A. Alton down to 12tg at 149. DA at 5, DT 2, Brown down to 7th, Ruth still 1st, Q up to 2, Lawson flies into standings at 12 at hwt

  • Something you're discounting, I think, Bill (and I admit that I've only been watching wrestling for maybe 2 years now) is the strategy that goes into the escape. You say about how easy it is to break free, but it really isn't always. Part of the problem is that several of our wrestlers seem like they actually just let their opponents go. This is, I think, for two reasons: (1) they're happy to trade 2-to-1 scores all day, because they're building a lead and know they can get those points; and (2) most of the pins I've seen from our kids come from shots, so they're also releasing so that they can reset their attacks. I don't think it's "really easy" to get escapes, but watching our best guys makes it look that way because they're always trying to score.
