PSU Depth Chart and Oversigning

  • With all of the recent oversigning articles and analysis, I thought I'd take a look at our current status. Please correct me where I'm wrong (I'm sure I missed something).

    - This is based on Scout.com's eligibility list. I'm not saying the players listed will necessarily end up at the positions noted, but this is where they appear on Scout's list.
    - Latham and Wedderburn are absent, as I'm assuming they are gone. I also left off a couple other guys because I'm not sure on their scholarship status. Let me know who's missing and where they should be added in the comments, and I'll update. This way we'll all have a nice view of who is where going into the offseason.
    - Finally, I've only listed the new recruits so we can keep track of the oversigning issue. I've never seen a definitive number posted anywhere, so this might help us all figure out how many kids this class will end with.

    Thanks in advance.

QB (4) - McGloin, Newsome, Bolden, Jones
RB/FB (7) - Green, Beachum, Suhey, Zordich, Dukes, Redd, Zwinak
TE (4) - Szczerba, Cadogan, Gilliam, Haplea
WR (8) - Moye, Brown, D. Smith, Drake, Kersey, Kuntz, Moseby-Felder, Kenney
OL (17) - Barham, Troutman, Pannell, Okoli, Farrell, Stankiewitch, Arcidiacano, Figueroa, Gress, Howle, Shrive, Urschel, Dieffenbach, Graham, Kolb, Ricketts, Mateas
DL (13) - Crawford, Still, Terry, Latimore, Hill, Stanley, Ware, Massaro, Hailes, Jones, Bars, Baublitz, Olaniyan
LB (8) - Stupar, Hodges, Mauti, Yancich, Carson, Fortt, Royer, Hull
DB (9) - Astorino, Powell, Sukay, Lynn, Thomas, Morris, Obeng-Agyapong, Wallace, Willis
    K/P (1) - Fera

This totals 71 scholarship players at the end of the 2010 season.

    The 2011 recruits (16):

    Pulliam
    Carter
    Oakman
    Kerner
    Mangiro
    Alosi
    Zanellato
    Robinson
    Kline
    Zettel
    Nowicki
    Smith
    Ficken
    Belton
    Barnes
    Amos

That equals 86. Oversigning Cup points = +2

        • Fera is on schollie. Also, if he is coming back, I think you want Thomas as a DB rather than WR, not that it changes the number. Is Stanley returning? Anybody heard anything more about Kersey wanting to transfer? The staff may be aware of some things we are not, i.e. Newsome's future.

I never have been a McGloin fan but I don't see how you take away a scholarship from a guy who started gb for 1/2 a year and a few won games at any school.

We're currently at 85 w the 15 verbally committed recruits. IMO, it looks like the staff is willing to take 17 in this class. The final 2 spots could come from a number of places. Robinson has been mentioned as a greyshirt. One of the walk-ons may not have his schollie removed. There may still be 1-2 transfers or kids who decide to give up football. All in all, 1-2 spots is a miniscule number compared to SEC teams needing to drop 10 current schollie kids or putting 4-6 commits in prep school.

                        • WHY would Farrell lose his ship??
                          Isn't Graham playing D-Line now?

                          • I don't believe that Farrell was a walk on so I don't see why he would lose his scholarship especially since he appears to be above most of our other OTs on the depth chart.

Going 1 or 2 over isn't that problematic because often there is some attritution naturally over the spring and summer.

And technically this would not be oversigning...that refers to signing more LOIs than the alloted 25 scholarships per class. Not so in this case. Although we would be above the 85 scholarship roster limit, that would not take effect until late summer when they have to comply with the 85 limit for the 2011 Fall Semester.

This is correct. I believe NavyNJ has stated before that the Athletic schollies run July-July, meaning that we would need to be under the limit before that date for the 2011-12 scholarship disbursement. Again, trimming 1-2 schollies in that period of time should not be an issue with several question marks lingering through the spring.

So does this mean that Latham and Wedderburn are technically still on scholarship? If "oversigning" refers to the 25 limit, then we're clearly under that. But if the scholarships run until July, then those two (among any others that will not be renewed) will take us over 85, at least until July. And I agree that there will likely be 1-2 others that drop off the above 70 list, which is certainly better than the 10 that Ole Miss, Alabama, and USC* have to trim as of the time of this comment.

                                  • Radakovich probably was a walkon that year, but from what was reported Farrell was offered and did sign an LOI. Since I don't have inside connections in the Lasch building, I'm going to assuming that he was offered from the beginning.

However, even if he was not, I do not believe that it has been PSU's practice to remove walk-ons scholarships after they have earned them. What I mean by earning them is by reaching #3 or greater on the depth chart and having PSU extend a scholarship. This is what walk-ons often state that PSU has told them regarding earning a scholarship. Occasionally a scholarship may open up for part of a year if a player with a scholarship leaves. In this case, PSU usually can't bring a recruit in to fill this position, so rather than waste it for that year, they will give it to a walk-on simply to ease the financial burden. In this case, the walk-on is aware that the scholarship goes away at the end of the year. I believe the year that Chris Baker, Chris Bell, and Phillip Taylor left in August that this was the scenario. Their departure left 3 scholarships vacated for that fall in which PSU couldn't bring any new recruits in. If a player earns a scholarship by getting playing time, a starting position, or even on the depth chart, I don't believe that PSU will take that offer away. While I'm sure that it has happened, I think the preference is to keep those guys on scholarship at all costs.

                                    • Any incoming recruits are not counted in the 85 total until they are registered for athletic aid in July...even if they arrive prior to that. IIRC, EE's are the only exception, and we only have one this yr in Alosi. He couldve filled either a spot of a departing player (Wedderburn) or a player who graduated in December. Seniors who graduate in the spring are still scholarship players until the term runs out in July. Again, the incoming freshman are added at that point, not when they sign their LOIs.

                                      • Furthermore, this time frame is what allows the "try-out" system used by schools who oversign. It allows the staff time to evaluate incoming frosh vs. existing personnel in drills thru May-Jun. It also allows them to get a final list on what kids will not qualify. Then, come July, based on the evals and qualifying results of the signed recruiting class, they make the decisions on which upperclassmen will not be offered schollie renewal. Some kids who sense the inevitable transfer beforehand, but many others are left w a rude awakening come July. Its an awful system for the kids, but its how those programs maintain the best 85 players on scholarship every year with minimal dead weight.
