Our recruiting...

  • I hear (see) a lot of people that are complaining about Penn State's recruiting in the Bill O'Brien era so far.

They are noticing that Michigan already has a ton of recruits so far and that Ohio already has a few in the bag as well. This leads them to believe that we are falling behind Michigan and Ohio again and that we are failing the recruiting war.
But I just don't see it as negatively as everyone else does. .

I guess you could look at it like this: Michigan is acting like the Cowboys and PSU is acting like the Patriots; Michigan (Cowboys) is throwing their money around and grabbing every possible big name out there, while PSU(Patriots) are doing their homework and focusing on players that fit their system.
Do you really think Michigan is trying to get only players that fit their scheme and will gel? No, they are trying to sign every big name out there that looks great on film and fills the 4-5 star quota, and hoping they will work together as a team and some of them 'pan out.

I would like to add that the ones that are complaining don't know jack -sh*t about recruiting and can only see stars and what the stars "supposedly" represent. They seem to have no idea how much chemistry means to a team. They just see those 4 and 5 stars and with that, the belief that this is the key to a championship.
I will say that getting 4 and 5 star recruits is important, but it is more about getting the right ones and mixing them in with some 2-3 star players that know their role and are team players.

So don't just assume that because Michigan is getting all these 4 and 5 stars players means they will be playing in a championship in a few years..
Try giving Bill and Co. a chance and see what his staff can do. They have only been here a few months now, so they have not had a lot of time to view film and get to know the players. You have to give these coaches some time! Bill will do what he can to get good payers and solid students - in keeping with the PSU tradition.

And if Bill can get the players that fit his scheme, how much more enjoyable will it be when we bring down the Michigans' and Ohios' of the world and all their 4 and 5 star players? It will kinda feel like the U.S,A vs. Russia hockey game.... it will feel amazing!!

And we will have done it OUR way!

    WE ARE!

  • Solid thoughts.

It may be that people arent remembering the Texas philosophy, and that we have 1 of their old big guns in our camp now in Mac. Texas currently has few offers out, when they do send them out they land verbals. Not because every kid offered immediately wants Texas, but the offered are already known by coaches to be ready to choose them. Very good way to build up certain perceptions.

I think that may be what is going on with our Oline and Mac right now. Kugler was from the old staff and the only other one to date is Johnson iirc.

Just food for thought, and stepping back and trying to figure out what may be going on in some instances, in thiss case, at least the Oline portion of recruiting.

  • I'm not worried at all, we are in great position with tons of prospects and the commitments will start coming in the next few months

  • It's really weird to see u rip Michigan like this. Still pissed over Drew Henson? Did Hoke blow off the lettermen? Do u mind if I post ur comments on twitter?

  • Also let's not forget that the MeatChicken coaches have been on these kids for over a year and their two biggest rivals in conference have been going through some turmoil. Let's give this staff some time, I for one have been impressed how many kids they have interested in the program with just a month in a half.

Also let's not forget that none of these players have seen what O'Brien will do as head coach, so recruits may be hesitant to pull the trigger quickly. There are a lot of things that go in to this, I'm only going to get worried if we finish up spring practice and we still don't have any verbals.

Give it time and I think we all will be happy

I actually hired a sports psychologist to help me with my anxiety and frustration during the Henson years. I am pretty sure that worked out pretty well for me.

    Also..

I am married to Bunchen, how can I be pissed?
I don't even know what Henson is up to these days.. I have not talked to him since Michigan.

    Twitter away...

Did he encourage that breakdown during the ESPN interview? I bet Gis likes that sensitive side too right?

So another question I've been meaning to ask you...what gives with Godsey? You obviously don't need a coach. Why couldn't you let us have him? A little selfish I think.

  • Agree with OP... There should be no rush to get commits at this time of year anyway IMO. Yes, I guess it would be nice to look at, but its a long way from now to NSD.

  • I do want to pass along my deepest condolences. If I had known, I wouldn't have asked such questions. I appreciate you spending time with us on a difficult day such as this.

It's ok. For a moment there, I was able to forget about Martinez passing away- posting on the Lion's board has always helped me get away from being THE Tom Brady. Thank you the kind words, - I respected him as much as my father and the opposite of Drew Henson.

As far as Godsey.. that was not my decision. He means little to me.. how can he help a God on the football field.
He DEFINITELY can help Mallet though. that kid needs some help.. but he has some potential

  • Let's also keep in mind Michigan is coming off a BCS win. We lost to Houston in the Ticket City bowl. BOB has a lot of negative momentum to overcome. You can only eat an elephant one bite at a time. Let's not call him disappointing yet.

  • I haven't said anything in regards to UM and OSU pulling in some good recruits so far, but I think you greatly underestimate Hoke. UM will be damn good, very, very soon.

That being said, it still doesn't matter, as we have a lot of time between now and NSD for us to fill out our class. No need to hit the panic button now.

‏@Cordale10 Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS

  • I think its important that BOB lands a 5 star recruit this year though. PSU is undertalented for the name it has and it would do BOB recruiting justice to show he can land the big fish.

Obviously it's no "lock" that we get any recrui t until NSD (see Cam Williams). But we're lookin pretty good now with both Breneman and Hack, and I wouldn't be too surprised to see either one (or both) of them be bumped up to a consensus 5 star in their senior year. However, Id be ecstatic to land them even if they're not bumped up. Also speaking of 5 stars, I'm curious as to where we stand on Robert Foster with the new staff.

  • I just think it's too early to worry. After all it's only been about 3 weeks since LOI day. There's a lot of time left between now and next year's LOI day. Looking at Mich and OSU vs. PSU kinda reminds me of the old story of the tortoise and the hare. It wasn't the guy with the fastest start that ended up on top of that story. At this time, I think the staff is doing a great job. We want players who want to be at PSU!
