Local voices and politics are always at play with Pittsburgh kids. Sad really. And pre-sanctions we would have Boyd, Johnson, and maybe Foster (he had us high too). Emmert must fall.

Boyd and Johnson yeah...we were a very distant 3rd at best (and likely 4th or 5th behind at least OSU pre-sanctions) for Foster though

Boyd's mother said what we all probably knew, but this probably confirms it: "Payne also said Boyd “probably would have picked Penn State, if not for the (NCAA) sanctions.”

    This crap pisses me off.

I get it if a kid chooses to go to OSU or Michigan instead of PSU due to the sanctions, but how does going to Pitt make a big difference?

Pitt plays to under 50,000 fans (Heinz capacity is 65,000), and had a game with 17,000 in attendance this past season.

Pitt is located in the ACC (until it dissolves, which leaves Pitt SOL), which means their road to a BCS game is more difficult than when they were in the Big Least.

They have played in same "who gives a shit" bowl game for the last three years, and very few fans travel to their bowl games.

Academically, they are not superior to Penn State in most regards. In the case of football players, our graduation rate trumps theirs.

There is NOTHING in which Pitt has a significantly better opportunity for a football player compared to Penn State. The "sanctions" comments are ignorant, at best.

Kids seem to buy the crap that Pitt is selling. I will never understand it either.

  • After reading that, I've got to say if not for Boyd's mother he may not be a Pitt commit. He seems like a bit of a momma's boy to me (not bashing him in anyway).

This Tyler Boyd saga has been pretty interesting and kind of annoying, but in all honesty I wouldn't be surprised if he flips to WVU, and I'm kind of hoping for it!

Edit: Sorry didn't realize this was already posted, this post can be deleted.

Sounds good to me. That way, anyone who wasn't following it can start doing so.

  • Mike Farrell is reporting that Tyler Boyd will be visiting Tennessee this weekend. I highly doubt he lands there, but anything could happen.

I know a lot of you aren't, but I'm really interested in seeing how the whole Tyler Boyd recruitment ends.

Rest assured it wasn't just pitt selling it. It was his "friends" and neighbors. They grow up there and never leave and follow the local team. Many of them never set foot on a college campus including pitt's. Johnson had already committed to PSU but had to bring Mom up to seal the deal. Boyd would have been no different. The kids are brainwashed. That was not always the case but it's why Joe went after the intelligent kids who were their own men. BOB has a real uphill battle here. The only thing that will change it is winning big which will take a few years. I'd focus on the other areas of PA and then go hard into the bordering states. There's also a barrier to overcome in terms of some of the coaches in western PA and that will have to die out before it changes.

"ESPN.com recruiting expert Jared Shanker reports, via text message from Boyd's mother Tonya Payne, that an in-home visit with West Virginia has been cancelled. Pittsburgh's in-home visit tonight is still on, and that will be the only team to set foot in Boyd's house. "

WOW. I don't know the woman, but she seems like an exceedingly stubborn person. I understand wanting the best for your child, but at this point you are holding him back.

I think Pitt is a better academic school than WVU. Word is she doesn't want him to go there bc they put football waaaaay before academics... I can't blame her for being against them when she asked what measures they had to keep football players in class and they said "we are working on it..." I agree with not pushing her son away/towards a school and being stubborn, but with respect to WVU, it seems like she has a point. But she said he could visit Tenn from what I've heard. Just seems that shes ultra anti WVU because of their lack of focus on academics...

It's my understanding that he is visiting Tennessee this weekend. She was also irritated because she said she has only heard from the coaches like twice in a year then all of a sudden two weeks before NSD they start talking to her again.

If this is the case I understand. My interpretation of "will be the only team to step foot in the home", led me to believe she would not entertain any possibilities other than Pitt. It's possible I misinterpreted...but she seems like she is "Tiger-Mom'ing" the process.

Yeah, there have been various reports, but the over-whelming word is just anti-WVU for those reasons... I don't know if she was particularly anti-PSU, but there is enough of that here in Pittsburgh that he got plenty of that anyway... Ironic thing is that according to what reports are of what momma Boyd wants, we are the best option... I think he is re-thinking Pitt, but at this point his options are limited, and he himself eliminated us... Maybe she had something to do with that too and Im wrong about her and PSU. But the word has been that she's concerned about the lack of academics at WVU. I'd imagine that Tenn isn't her first choice either because of distance and like Chuck said, lack of contact... But with respect to WVU, I get it and have heard similar things from different parents- I think the "we are working on it" was to another parent, but there have been a few articles with Boyds mom where she voices the same concerns.

I agree, but never say never.

Along those lines, an unrated 2014 DT from Florida recently committed to Western Michigan. Have to think that one won't stick.

I'd be interested to see what percentage of kids who commit more than a year before NSD stick.

  • Nothing concrete yet but what's the trick in Oxford? Mike Farrell tweeted he's changed his predictions (for what that's worth) on 5 stars Laremy Tunsil and Chris Jones (MSU commit) to Ole Miss on signing day. Laquan Treadwell and most likely Kemdiche what a haul for a 1st year coach.

No. Ole Miss is the leader for the top three kids in the nation, not to mention two other 5* prospects. We would have had a good class, possibly top 10, but not even close to what Ole Miss is doing.

With Roof and the GA kids? I think we would have been that good. Trey Johnson is ours if no sanctions. A few FL kids too. But thats all what ifs. I dont like to think about it. #ScrewyouEmmert
