When 3rd down is treated like 2nd down, this is the perfect time to throw the ball in high percentage, high leverage situations.

There have been numerous times when BOB did it on our side of the 50 and we had to punt.

The most important things about PSU that we have to keep doing well to succeed IMO.

Unfortunately we've got two tough home games in UM and Nebby, and we'll need to upset both to stay perfect at home. The rest are pretty meh, with EMU, Kent State, UCF, Illinois, and Purdue.

You're right, let's just run the fullback dive on 3rd and 1 each time and not mix it up by passing some times..... #sarcasm

  • Our overall record being forever altered by referees or playing 11 on 12 every week. Hopefully, they got that shit out of their system last year.

This absolutely was a problem last year. You have Zwinak... use him.

It's called mixing it up.... do you propose we run the ball on 3rd and 1 on EVERY opportunity to do so? Because if not, the only other option is to pass the ball--unless you'd like to punt on 3rd and 1 every so often in order to keep the defense really on their heals.

Its a delicate balance of both that is best IMO. If you pass it every time on 3rd and 1, its no longer mixing it up and gets to be predictable, similar to the way that the HB/FB dive is predictable if you run it in every short yardage situation.

There is no question BOB fell too much in love with the pass at times last season, and it would cost us every once in a while. I'm hoping he's more balanced this season, which would help Bench out quite a bit IMO.

You couldn't be more wrong.... I went back and broke down every game play by play based on the official statistics and here's what I found. On 3rd and 1 on our side of the 50 (or frankly anywhere even near mid-field), PSU threw the ball a grand total of 5 times in 12 games, and never more than twice per any one game:

OHIO--In the 1Q (score 0-0) we were unsuccessful in passing on 3rd and 1. Later, in the 3Q (down 17-14) we successfully passed and made a 1st down.
UVA--2Q (up 7-0) we successfully passed for a 1st down on 3rd and 1 on our side of the field. (ALSO note that we ran the ball on 3rd and 1 on our side of the field and were unsuccessful.)
NW--1Q (up 3-0) success passing for 1st down.
    IOWA--3Q (up 31-0) unsuccessful passing.

    That's all.

For the year--total break down stats of 3rd and 1 in our territory:

    Ran successfully 12/13 times (but 7 were McGloin keepers);
    Passed successfully 3/5 times.

That's definitely doesn't sound like it was "numerous times" unless 2 is numerous, and certainly it wasn't a problem last year.

Yes. I would do it until someone stopped me... and then I would run it again. How many negative yardage or no gain plays did Zwinak have last year?

I agree with that statement more than what Jive is trying to sell me, which incidentally is a load of crap. There were times where I though we threw the ball three straight downs and had to punt, and wished after the fact that we had run the ball on 1st or 2nd in order to set up a manageable 3rd down.

But even so, look at the numbers:

McGloin passed the ball 446 times, completing 60.5% of his passes, averaging 7.33 yards per attempt (not yards per completion, but yards per attempt).

We ran the ball as a team 475 times for a team average of 3.6 yards per attempt (but Zwinak was much better at 4.9 yards per rush).

So we ran the ball 51.6% of the time. That's very balanced....

Now if you want to get into specific game situations throughout the year, that's a great discussion to have. But I think we need to go back to reality and what actually happened.
