  • Can someone translate the season ticket numbers that are mentioned. So he says we are 4500 behind last year. But how many went unsold last year? Does anyone have a sense of the total number of unsold season tickets, then how many single game tickets are their normally?

  • Someone explain to me like I'm a small child, why would I want to purchase season tickets when they aren't selling out and you could in theory just buy single game tickets without the donation?

    Well,

You can do what you say. BUT ... remember that it goes ...

    1) Season tickets
    2) Individual games to NLC member (with some limit)
    3) Individual games to public

I doubt there will be much left for the public for the OSU/WIS games. (Well, maybe only OSU because WIS is gonna be a cold one)

What it means is that more tickets do go to the visitors.

And there's a fencer out there that gets part of my money too.

    I forgot to mention,

I've had season tickets for the last 8 years and make my donations every year, but as supply increases and demand drops it results in people questioning the purpose of NLC.

Some people find themselves purchasing the season tickets for 1 or 2 games a season - when you could probably just go on stubhub or go to a scalper and buy tickets for those two games for far less of a cost.

If I was older and had more disposable income I would buy season tickets..... Younger and less income = purchase by game. PSU needs to re-work the economics of their spending a bit.

  • "We have a little bit of flexibility in 2015 or 2016, but then Big Ten's due to go to nine games, so how does that impact it? "

Not at all reassuring that Joyner doesn't know that the Big Ten ditched plans to move to nine games back when they agreed to the Pac 12 deal back in December

Maybe he meant it that way, or perhaps he's indicating that the Big 10 is dictating 9 games (8 big 10 and 1 Pac 10/12), either way there are still only 3 games he gets to schedule

FJP - I think if you are donating to the NLC you first have to be charitably-minded. Otherwise, I agree why would you buy the $100/seat donation season tickets when you can still get tickets for most games from the box office.

I give in the $600/seat zone for a couple reasons. I first look at my NLC contribution as a scholarship donation. While I don't have deep enough pockets to just give away tickets to games I can't make, I don't look to recoup my donation via the buyers of my tickets.

The $600/seat giving level has secured me progressively better seats thanks to STEP - this year on the 45 yard line (for every Old Man Euler there is someone like me). I think there is a good enough market for 45 yard line tickets that I'm confident I won't be stuck with unsold tickets if I can't make a game.

This level also gets me a numbered parking space on pavement.

  • FJP - if BOB does indeed turn us into the Alabama of the north as he wants there wont be individual season tickets available. Then again, if he stinks there will be plenty.

I live in Texas, but if I didn't I would have season tickets and go to every game. I love PSU, love tailgating and love the games. I would be worried that some day I would be shut out because I'm expecting them to win at a high level in the near future.

  • OK - so based upon these discussions where people make very valid points on why you should donate to NLC and have tickets, why do you think there is such a lack of demand for tickets?

Is it the economy? The product on the field? Aforementioned reasons from above?

I will continue to donate to NLC and get my tickets in that nice yellow envelope padded with parking passes and the like; however, many people it seem will start to go via the 3rd party market (stubhub).

Just thought it was interesting that there is such a supply of tickets - where as of a few years ago you needed upwards of 55-60 points if you wanted to get tickets on the goal line.

I think we are looking at a combination of factors. The early 2000's tested the PSU fanhood and ticketing held up pretty good through the dark years.

I think the largest contributor to the demand is the implementation of STEP. Since we're only in the 2nd year it's tough to forecast 10 years down the road, but i'm sure the AD did and are confident that they're not looking at a cliff.

You can't discount the number of long time season ticket holders (i'm talking since the horse trade from back when they removed the running track around the field) who were either pissed off enough about PSU trying to better monetize their season tickets, or who just couldn't afford seats between the 30's any longer. These are folks who were able to sit in the best seats in the stadium for decades for a minimal donation and were now looking at a $2500+ tab. These are people who wouldn't be happy sitting in the corner upper deck seats where I've sat for 10 years. STEP may have poisoned these fans enough to remove them completely from the season ticket pool - the TV view from your couch is looking good.

I think in the coming years, PSU will graduate enough people who are football fans to eventually pick up the slack
