On Shawney Kersey...

  • For those of you who didn't see it posted below, I have heard that the release has been granted by Penn State. Kersey cannot transfer to another Big Ten school, Pittsburgh, Rutgers or Temple. I'm hearing that the likely destinations are Cincinnati or UConn. The reason I keep hearing on Kersey is that he just wasn't happy here. It wasn't as much about playing time or his usage in the passing game as much as it was him being comfortable at Penn State.

Like I mentioned last night, it's not the first time he's tried to get out of his scholarship. The first time was this past winter, but he was talked out of it. Apparently he's been talking on and off about it since then, and it came to fruition this week. That's all I've got for now.

  • What a clown. Three more years with Bolden he could have had. Does he get two or three more years of playing at the new school after sitting out a year?

  • He will only have 2 years, he will be ineligible for this year an next.

  • Why transfer now is my only question. Why not wait until right before the bowl, so he could still play spring ball elsewhere. He could have invaluable game experience for the rest of this year, because it's not like he was sitting on the bench the whole game.

  • Good luck to him. If he's not happy at PSU, there isn't much that will change that. Disappointing, but hopefully he's more comfortable wherever he goes.

Sean - will this end up affecting Zanellato's recruitment at all? Also, what's the news on other possible transfers? Is it true that there might be more people leaving?

  • Not sure on Zanellato's recruitment with Penn State, but he should be getting word of his first offer tomorrow (not from PSU), so that may change some things. Schools won't be able to string him along with the hopes of getting him to walk on.

Nothing imminent on the transfer front, but it's something that will probably be revisited after the season.

  • If the kid was unhappy, then he should move on. It is a strange move to make in the middle of a season, but I think the decision was made primarily for non football reasons and partially for football reasons. It's really difficult for some guys to make the transition to life in HV...Woodbury, NJ is about as far opposite on the spectrum of life from HV. To me, Cincinnati makes a lot of sense since RU and Temple aren't options.

  • Wow, well thanks for the info, Sean. It's ashame to see Shawney wasn't happy here at Penn State. Just makes you wonder why he ended up picking Penn State then? Maybe he just had a change of heart after he got here and missed home or something. I guess we will never know that for sure. Interesting that he can't transfer to Pitt, Rutgers and Temple too. I guess that's a good thing though.

Best of luck to him wherever he ends up.

  • We had a thread about recruiting and the promise (or lack of) if the 2011/2 classes. This DOESN'T help!! Best of luck to him wherever he may end up, guess PSU just wasn't right for him. I don't think we'll miss him!!
