Okay let's get the new staff scuttlebutt going.

  • Anyone have any clues as to who may be candidates?

  • Whipple would be a good candidate for OC imo and as Pat mentioned, would be a guy to keep an eye on.

  • Glenn Spencer is probably another name to watch. Coached with O'Brien at Duke and Georgia Tech. He's currently the Co-Defensive Coordinator at Oklahoma State.

    They have a defense?

I was thinking the same thing, but I think you have to start and look at guys he's worked in the past.

All of the names that have popped up so far are guys he's worked with before

  • He talked about setting his bloodlines in the Midatlantic for recruiting, and that's where I'd imagine he'd look to for his staff. The Mid-Atlantic and Ohio is a huge bed of recruits.

  • Are any of them successful? Or did they just work with him? He did a great job at the PC, but the jury is still out. Also would have been nice to hear him mention NC as one of his goals, along with the other "fluff" thrown out. Hope he does a great job though.

Pat, any chance you could come up with a list of potential staff targets who are currently unemployed. I know it's pretty hard to consider those who are currently employed as it would be impossible to know their interest level.

  • Whipple would be a perfect OC for us!!!!

he already made this in the thread "Bill O'Brien coaching tree" or something like that

I want a list of the top available potential coaches not solely the coaches who have worked with or under him.

I would expect his staff to have a little more area to be responsible for so they can also go into Florida, Texas and Cali more

I'll see what I can find because there's always a lot of movement in the off season

  • I knew you were up for the task Pat. Thanks, I'm sure you guys will be plenty busy over the next month.

  • What about a guy like Locksley at UMD? If he and LJ teamed up to recruit MD/DC/VA it'd be slim pickens for everyone else. I don't really think that the offense was the Terps problem this year.

Locksley was just hired at Maryland, therefore he didn't have anything to do with the Terps offense this past year. Also, do you think he would leave already after just signing with Maryland.

Mark Whipple makes sense, especially with the Browns targeting Brad Childress as OC. Childress and Whipple both coach QBs, so Whipple could be the odd man out.

I was thinking that Locksley was there for this season. As far as leaving MD for PSU, I can't speak for him, but wouldn't you do it?

I was just brainstorming guys who have had success in recruiting our base area.

Would guess it's highly unlikely but I like your line of thinking.

I'm not so sure he would leave after just getting the OC job at Maryland. It will also depend on how involved BOB plans to be with the offense. Is he going to have a say in play calling or will the OC handle it. I think Mark Whipple is a guy with ties to BOB and would be a solid QB/OC candidate.

  • Whipple doesn't exactly excite me, admittedly part of that is not knowing much about him.

Just over a week ago I had a long conversation with a lower level coach that recruits Maryland. He went out of his way to talk about Locksleys recruiting prowess in the state. He has top of the line ins and is LJ's #1 competiton. He is an elite recruiter.
