Ohio University - Phil Steele Rankings

  • PSU JAG said...

What do you mean by this? Phil Steele is typically one of the most pro-PSU analysts out there.

Not sure why that doesn't make him a hack? Pro-PSU doesn't make him good at what he does. Although I don't think he's a hack, not sure how pro-PSU = good analyst.

I think the concern is that there will be a learning curve with the PSU team and it might take some time for the team to come together.

Not trying to attack you, but I have a huge problem when people say this.
A post like this implies that the PSU offense was on the same page previously and that a new system is a short-term negative because now the offense won't be on the same page and as gelled as they previously were.
Which is total BS because the previous offensive system from top to bottom was a total cluster£&)$ that did nothing but shoot this team in the foot. The previous offense was never, EVER "on the same page" for the past 2 years at least.
The new staff could give the offense a playbook in Swahili and they would be more in sync than they ever were in the last couple years.

agree, hard to imagine the offense much worse given the talent........i mean the rotating qb's was ridiculous last year.

  • It is true that the PSU offense over the last few years was terrible and had a lot of issues. However, for the most part, the defense was solid. Both the offense and defense are going to learn a new, more complicated system. In addition, PSU is not deep in a few key spots and will have to count on kids that have very little experience. There is very good reason to be excited about the new staff and what they will do with the team and future teams. However, I do not think it is all that crazy for people to think it might take a little while for the team gel or be considered a very good team.

You should pay attention to posters here and at other sites. That's what a lot use to judge the competency of people like Phil Steele.

  • Phil Steele is good at what he does, which is complie stats and make predictions based off of the analysis of those stats. PSU being so low this year shouldn't be surprising since we have so few returning starters this year (something that Phil puts a lot of weight into). However, that stat is misleading for us because of injuries and the way we rotate guys in. Technically, we only have 4 starters returning on defense (Hill, Hodges, Carson and Mauti), but everyone except for SOA has had significant playing time in the past. That is something that Phil Steele doesn't take into consideration, because you really can't put a stat on that type of situation.

Since we have a new coaching staff, I really don't think that you can take any kind of prediction too seriously. Nobody knows what kind of team we will have.

  • I think Phil's ranking of PSU outside the top 40 has more to do with for the first time in 40 plus years no one knows what to expect out of a Penn State football team.

I always liked Phil Steele. I think he, like most others besides us, is waiting to see the product before rating us too highly. We have alot of uncertainty to the unbiased observer.

No starting QB and none of the canidates exactly lit it up last year. New coach and a new system heavy on the offense. None of the current players are used to that type of offense. It's a mentally challanging system at that. BOB will basically be playing the year with Joe's players One returning starter on the offensive line.

I don't think we can really expect to be ranked too high. WIth that being said, if we take care of business things will work out.

You hit the nail on the head. Anybody that says they can say for certain what we're gonna do this year is full of hot air. There is a lot of potential and hope, but truth be told, nobody knows what to expect.

If stating a fact is insulting other posters then I am guilty. You were on BWI, you know damn well what I said was true.

No clue. I can honestly say I have only read his magazine once. The time I read it was for a specific reason and it has to do with what I said above. I know my basis of opinion would include more then his take on PSU.

  • I was surprised to see Phil didn't have us in the surprise teams. Phil is far from a hack though. He is the only preseason magazine that I pick up. It has become tradition to pick up his magazine the day before I head down to Sea Isle for the week. He is passionate about college football and truly has a dream job imo.

Ohio returns 3 on offense and 8 on defense. Hopefully we can limit the scoring.

In other news checkout UCF vs. Ohio State - They return 10 on defense and 7 on offense.

surprised that he ranks OHIO U that high if they only return 3 on offense and 8 on defense since that is one of the main components of the formula in the rankings

Steele isn't a hack IMO. Far from it and has pretty good knowledge in terms of what is going on nationally. He isn't perfect, but I can't think of too many who are better than he is overall. Ohio will play PSU very closely and PSU will be on upset watch that weekend unless BOB and his staff really are that good that soon.

While Steele might not be a hack, he is hardly infallible with his predictions. Here is his top 40 from last year:

    Phil's Top 40
    1. Alabama
    2. Oklahoma
    3. Boise State
    4. Oregon
    5. Virginia Tech
    6. Notre Dame
    7. LSU
    8. Texas A&M
    9. Georgia
    10. Florida St.
    11. TCU
    12. Nebraska
    13. Arkansas
    14. South Carolina
    15. Ohio State
    16. Stanford
    17. USC
    18. Texas
    19. Oklahoma State
    20. Southern Mississippi
    21. Houston
    22. Arizona State
    23. Wisconsin
    24. Penn State
    25. South Florida
    26. North Carolina
    27. Pittsburgh
    28. Michigan State
    29. BYU
    30. Air Force
    31. Miami
    32. Florida
    33. West Virginia
    34. Ohio University
    35. Tulsa
    36. Mississippi State
    37. Clemson
    38. Missouri
    39. Illinois
    40. North Carolina State

As you can see, he was off on a lot of these predictions(although, ironically, he got PSU almost exactly right). He had ND, FSU, and TAMU in his top 10. OSU was ranked 15th. He only had Ok State at 19. ASU clocked in at 22 in his poll. Several other schools in his top 40 that did not finish anywhere near where he predicted in the preseason.

Who is this PSUfan42 you speak of?

    LOL...

Yes, I guess you can say I follow Ohio U...actually have a team worth following thanks to Frank.

Frank is a great coach and with 15 years as Nebraska's RB coach helped produce a lot of great players. The only reason he got pushed out at Nebraska is he could not land the high profile recruits they needed to sustain their program like Osborne could. He bounced back in his home state where there is infinitely more talent a MAC school can pick up and compete with. He is still a highly regarded coach here in Lincoln; just didn't have the charisma needed to succeed at Nebraska where there is no local talent.

Edit: He was also the last Nebraska head coach to win the Big 12.
