Didn't you see that a few weeks ago?

Yes, which made me want to watch it again. Mostly want to see Fed get the career golden slam. But I also grew up after amateurs left the Olympics, so I can't compare it to back in the day. It is disappointing that nothing like the 1980 men's hockey team could ever happen again though.

I did. It was a high quality match, and I think it will be tremendous theatre in a 3 set format.

I haven't watched much tennis in years, particularly women's. How does Serena ever lose?

Beats herself. That's about it. You'd be surprised how often she does it.

Injuries or lack of interest. When she's healthy and engaged, no one else is even close to her stratosphere. If she hadn't essentially taken 4-5 yrs off in the prime of her career, who knows how many Majors she'd have.

  • My 3-1/2 year old daughter and I are watching the trampoline finals and she just said, "I don't like these girls cause they're not USA". How great is that?

    Haha that's awesome.

Anyone just see the guy with prosthetics qualifying race?

Unbelievable. I did a year of residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 20 years ago and the progress in prosthetics is ridiculous.

Pretty amazing. What are your feelings on whether or not it's a competitive advantage?

There is an advantage. Not to take away from anything he's done, but there are a lot of things that he doesn't have to worry about like calf strains/pulls, knee issues, shin splints, ankle sprains, etc. In training he has less things to focus on and strengthen. JMO of course.

Not sure. Back then with basic prostheses, IIRC, a BKA (below knee amputation) expended about 50% more energy and an AKA used twice as much walking. I suppose someone has calculated how the recoil of these new prostheses affects speed and energy requirements compared with normal athletes. I will say that wearing a prosthesis (again 20 years ago) is not easy.

  • Got to watch Penn Stater Bobby Lea on NBC Sports at 6 am this morning as he competed in the individual pursuit event on Day Two of the Omnium competition (Omnium is the decathalon of cycling - competitors compete in six events over two days). After four events, Bobby is in 9th place - an improvement of two spots from where he ended yesterday. The next event in the competition is the 15km Scratch Race which will go off at noon. The 1km time trial is the last event and it starts at 1:15. Unfortunately, neither of those events are scheduled to be televised so you'll have to watch online if you want to catch him.

You got me up at 6:00 to watch this? (Actually my 9 month old woke up at 5:30.) Not the drama I was expecting.

Seriously. This is about as one sided as it gets. Two terrible finals on back to back days barring some miracle break right here.

Pretty cool to see Murray win and, looking at the bright side, it didn't take too long. Now I can go to an earlier Mass.

  • Disagree with almost everything in this post. The duration of the event is irrelevant. I'd argue a better comparison was if there was 100 m backwards dash, 200 m backwards dash, and a 4x100 medley. Saying he would "dominate" in the next two years is pure speculation. I would take Carl Lewis, Edwin Moses or (pending the outcome of this Olympics) May-Treanor/Walsh and the Russian wrestler that won three golds and a silver as more dominant in their sports And these are just the one's I can name off the top of my head.

Edit: AS dominant, not necessarily more dominant.

Bobby fell to 10th after the fifth event, then 12th after the final event. He was the only American to qualify so he gets highest American finisher by default.

To me, Phelps is a mixture of Shaq and Russell. Bear with me here. He is Russell in the fact that he wins and has won more than anyone else in his sport, and it's not really close. But he's Shaq is everything else. When he wants to be, like Shaq in bball, he can be the most dominant force in swimming. The problem is, we're not sure he wants it. When I listen to him and his action, etc. I don't get the feeling that he wants to be the best he can be and dominate the way he could. He even said if himself, when he acts serious he isn't that great, but when he doesn't care and is just having fun he does well. He doesnt thirst fir perfect in his sport (i cant believe this is his last Olympics, you would have to kill me to keep me from competing if i could). Like Shaq, pure ability and talent made him the best. And that's what he is. The best, even if I feel he could have done a bit more.

No doubt that Phelps is the best swimmer in Olympic history. My point was that since swimming has multiple similar events and relays, he has the possibility of competing for multiple medals each Olympiad. The people I listed were just as dominant in their respective sports. The Russian dude wasn't scored on in SIX YEARS! The girls hadn't lost a set in 2-1/2 Olympics until Saturday. IMO, his medal count doesn't make him the greatest Olympian. It makes him the greatest Olympic swimmer and the winningest Olympian of all time.
