Why not hold this presser last week when he returned from vacation? If it wasn't a leverage play, why the PR nightmare of NFL rumors and leaks from his agent. Why meet in secret with the Browns and announce it days later? Why not just come out and say at the end of the season that he'll be here next year and meetings with the NFL are professional courtesy? Where did the $1.3 million (well deserved) number come from?
He's too smart to stumble blindly in PR like the last week.

"I plan to be the head football coach here. I'm not a genie, I don't have a crystal ball. I have a lot of respect for that league. I love that league. This is my profession.
I can't be more clear about this -- I love coaching these kids. I enjoy being the head fb coach at Penn State. I enjoy being here and I plan to be here."

On keeping staff intact and making their salaries more competitive:
"I think it's important for these guys to move up the ladder, and we've got some fantastic coaches on our staff that will have some chances to be coordinators or head coaches. You never wnat to hold those guys back. I think these guys are paid well. I think they can always be paid better. There's things we've talked about ways we can do that. WE'll do the best we can to try to make it attractive to coach here"

I absolutely get that.
We can work under the assumption that he's honest now and his statements don't match what happened, therefore seem confusing.
Or we can assume he's still doing "coach-speak" double talk because getting his job done effectively is in direct conflict with telling the media everything.

Perhaps that all we've heard over the weekend was that BOB won a big power play over Joyner. Now all of a sudden he's up there praising working with him. Something doesn't add up here. Numerous "insiders" swore this whole thing was about ousting Joyner and making changes. So either they were all dead wrong, or BOB ultimately lost that power struggle to Erickson/Joyner and this is the result. Either way, something isn't adding up right now.

A third option is that they don't want to bring more speculation from certain media members about a coach forcing the administrations hand and PSU's culture not changing. So in public, you commend the job they are doing and you change stuff behind the scenes.
