They charge that much because there are still people willing to pay it.
If there was no demand for a lawyer of that price, then the lawyers would drop their prices. Its simple economics. They can charge that much money, and still get enough business to make the income they desire.

Maybe so, but I've never been a fan of comparative arguments. I'm sure our judicial system is better than a lot of countries' systems - that doesn't make it good.
I'm not sure I'd consider shady evidence that much worse than disallowing evidence based on technicalities.
I don't think having a "good enough lawyer" necessarily solves many of the problems. Not to mention the fact that good enough lawyers cost pretty pennies.

The rules are in place to keep people from abusing the system.
For instance, shady evidence might be considered what MM said he told Curley and Schulz in their meeting. In the old days in England, if a person was reputable enough, the evidence would have been admitted because the person said so and Curley and Schulz would be going to jail for perjury. This is a poor example, but its the only one I can think of that would be relevant to Penn Staters right now.
States used to build up cases on shoddy evidence, and would put people away even though they might have been innocent.
I'd rather have it the way it is today than the way it was before we had our own Bill of Rights and Constitution.
