That's true with most things in life.

If you're good at something, never do it for free.

There's a difference between free and $750-$1000 an hour for something that will take 100 hours or more...

They charge that much because there are still people willing to pay it.

If there was no demand for a lawyer of that price, then the lawyers would drop their prices. Its simple economics. They can charge that much money, and still get enough business to make the income they desire.

I know all of this. My point was that many people who need a great lawyer simply cannot afford it and get saddled with a crap lawyer. The fact that other people are willing to pay for the expensive, and many times much better, lawyers doesn't change that point at all.

Maybe so, but I've never been a fan of comparative arguments. I'm sure our judicial system is better than a lot of countries' systems - that doesn't make it good.

I'm not sure I'd consider shady evidence that much worse than disallowing evidence based on technicalities.

I don't think having a "good enough lawyer" necessarily solves many of the problems. Not to mention the fact that good enough lawyers cost pretty pennies.

The rules are in place to keep people from abusing the system.

For instance, shady evidence might be considered what MM said he told Curley and Schulz in their meeting. In the old days in England, if a person was reputable enough, the evidence would have been admitted because the person said so and Curley and Schulz would be going to jail for perjury. This is a poor example, but its the only one I can think of that would be relevant to Penn Staters right now.

States used to build up cases on shoddy evidence, and would put people away even though they might have been innocent.

I'd rather have it the way it is today than the way it was before we had our own Bill of Rights and Constitution.

I know, just pointing out its not the lawyers fault. "Don't hate the player" kind of a thing.

Why not? I've known plenty of engineers who have gone on missions trips to other countries and essentially donated their time and services to help people in need.

But they don't do that for a living.

If people expect lawyers to do pro bono work, then the quality of lawyers as a whole would drop considerably, as people would leave to chase more lucrative careers.

That's true. But the quote you used was "never do it for free."

Haha I don't hate the lawyers. It's not their fault. Fyi I'm in law school so it's not that part that bothers me. It's that the middle and lower classes exceedingly have little access to the lawyers who are best able to help them.

I'm not sure what you're arguing. Did I say I wanted to return to the days of yore?

Lawyers actually have mandated pro Bono requirements. Problem is they can kind of skirt these at most firms and count almost anything as pro bono

Just defending the system, nothing personal.

I hate that a poor person can't win a lawsuit against a rich person many times, for the simple fact that they can't afford a good lawyer, even if they would win if all else were equal.

Taking my daughter to Disneyland for first time. I haven't been there in 30+ years.

Can never go wrong there. I love walking in and just instantly feeling happy, whether it was when I was 5 or when I was 21 (I think those are the times I went to Disney (world not land, but same thing)).

I'm in "Lent Trap" mode ... thankfully we are going to an Italian place tonight, so I might be able to get something with meat sauce or chicken parm.

No classes next week so I think I'll do some reading, PS3 (maybe some COD MW3 with Arch), hang out with friends and family, read this message board, dice with buddies, and look forward to another fiscal month end closing cycle.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

We're getting old. I'm 23 and I feel like I couldn't hang with the 21 year olds anymore. I'll find out if that's true Blue/White weekend though...

There is going to be an insane amount of cops around this weekend, probably more than any other year.
