Just finished watching the Walking Dead and am three episodes from completely catching up on Mad Men. I don't think I'll ever be able to watch a network show the same way.

For those of you guys that watch the Walking Dead, how much of the book does the first two seasons represent? I've kind of tried to look it up, but I feel I'm going to spoil part of the show if I accidentally see too much.

I've been a fan of the comic series since before the show was even an idea in anyone's mind. Issue 100 came out this past week, and I don't remember numbers exactly, but I think the show isn't even halfway through that. If I had to guess I 'd say the show has covered (more or less, since season one really went on it's own direction) a third of the current series.

It's an entertaining show, and I'm fine with some of the changes because I know it wouldn't translate very well to TV, but overall the show is pretty subpar compared to the source material.

That's kind of what I figured I'd hear. I really enjoy the series, so if I read the book it'd probably ruin it for me. That's what happened with the Hunger Games (I'm sure some in here have their opinions on that). I walked out of the theatre pretty underwhelmed after that. A lot of people thought the movie was good, but I thought it was pretty bad and I really enjoyed the book.

I still haven't seen The Hunger games. I've read all three books, and I didn't want to blow money in theaters knowing I'll have gripes about it. From what I heard, they did a great job with the movie though.

Back to Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman still has the reigns for the TV series. He said it'll follow the general story line of the comic, but will still take on it's own path for various reasons. If you're already two seasons in, I'd say stay away from the comic for the time being. Once the show is over, I recommend picking up the trade paperbacks, or collected editions of the comic and read those. The writing isn't anything special, but the characters and story lend themselves much more to the comic medium than TV. Much more endearing and engaging, and Kirkman doesn't have to worry about TV censorship or FX budgets when doing comics.

  • I think it's a good thing when something takes a little different direction than a book. Sounds good about reading the book, but who knows how many years down the line that could be. I think the thing I really like about the series is they're not afraid to knock off main characters. It really keeps the audience on their feet.

  • Hank why do you drink? Why do you blow smoke? Why must you live by the songs that you wrote.

The comics takes the killing a lot further than the show. I don't want to spoil anything for you, but there's some things that happen that TV execs, or even movie studio heads, would never even consider.

I think Kirkman did a good job of getting around that so far. It must be tough for him to go from writing a comic where you have relative freedom, to writing a TV show where you have a million people looking over your shoulder.

  • Sounds like the book is similar to the Saw movies. Always liked those.

It's interesting to see the evolution of the Hank Williams name over all three generations.

Can't really explain too much without spoiling, but it's not pushing the boundary in the same way Saw did.

And stop calling it "the book." It's not a novel, it's a comic.

Mr. Hank Williams I is a musical saint, and deserves respect.

Hank Jr. is a dipshit, and doesn't quite have the talent his dad did but still could be good.

Hank III, is even more of a moron than his dad, but has more talent than either of the two before him. If he would quit singing songs that can't be repeated mainstream and quit demanding girls take their shirts off at concerts then he'd be a hell of a lot more successful.

    God, I love that show

If people would kindly keep any spoilers of consequence of Breaking Bad out of this thread, I would appreciate it. Probably won't get around to it 'til Tuesday.

  • Anyone know why I can't record more than 6 episodes of Game of Thrones on Direct TV's DVR? They played the entire 1st season yesterday (and the entire 2nd season today). When I got home last night, only the last 6 episodes were stored. I was PISSED!

hbogo.com - hbo lets you watch all their shows and movies for free if you have an HBO account through most of the major tv services. Pretty awesome. Cinemax and Showtime both do it as well (maybe others too, I'm not sure).

  • Shavi, still watching The Newsroom? It's becoming very much the soap opera. Not sure it's going to last.

Edit: Just as I hit "post", Gabrielle Gifford's shooting comes up. That was my supermarket at that time. I was there 30 minutes before the shooting. Episode ended strongly.

Yeah, Hank 3 is a special type of person. He's more than capable of creating stuff that his dad and grandpa made, but he makes more stuff like his material with Superjoint Ritual.

The prison show? I saw about 5 seconds of it a few years ago while skimming channels. Some guy giving the Farmers Insurance commercial guy a BJ. Heard it was a good show but my 1st wife was not a fan.

Well step one sounds like it's complete: ditch the bad wife

Step two is: watch the show
