Of the transfers how would you rank the losses?

  • I think it goes

    1. Redd- He is the biggest loss although I think we can replace him with a mix of Dukes and Belton
    2. Fera- Starting kicker and punter and he was good at both
    3. Brown- He may not have been great, but he was a good wr and by far our most experienced.
    4. Fortt- A good LB but not a starter. I think it will hurt more next year when he could've went to OLB and started next to Fortt.
    5. Pollard- We need young DT's. That being said, who knows if he would've been better than A. Johnson and Dowerey anyway.
    6. Buckley- Don't know anything about but any DB loss stinks right now.
    7. Bolden, Haplea, Nowicki- Didn't need any of them anyway.

To me we lost 4 players that we needed and I think they can be mostly replaced for this year. RB is easy for a younger player to come in and play right away. As for Brown, I have seen other schools have freshman WR's and QB's come in and have better numbers than our SR's. Maybe our new staff develops young players at a faster rate and guys like Robinson and Lewis produce at a high level this year.

    What do you guys think?

  • 1. Pollard - Has all his eligibility and as much as I trust LJ, I'm not sure about the depth of the position in the future.
    2. Redd - Obviously the best player, but we're only losing him for 1 year (with all things considered).
    3. Fera - Butterworth should be fine punting, but losing him as a kicker and kickoff specialist could really hurt.
    4. Brown - I had a lot higher opinion of Brown than most on this board, but again 1 year comes into play when making a list like this.
    5. Fortt - One injury and he was starting. Would have gotten a lot of snaps regardless.
    6. Nowicki - I know he was buried on the DC, but by his senior year I think he'd be starting or getting legit PT.
    7. Buckley - DB depth is horrid.
    8. Haplea - Never much of a fan of his, but hurts to lose a guy with experience.
    9. Bolden - Best thing to happen for both parties is a fresh start. Best of luck to him.

Agree for the most part, but I'd switch Fortt and Brown (he is a better player) and put Nowicki on par (even) with Buckley... Position wise, Buckley hurts, but you have to wonder how much he would have played. Nowicki was highly regarded coming out of HS. And he is a big boy that would have benefitted from Fitz... But I would still put Buckley ahead of Bolden lol And Haplea just got passed on the depth chart by a true freshman and a RS freshman... So no real loss there... Basically the top 5 matter. Everyone else, eh...

  • 1) Anthony Fera- just an unfortunate situation for both parties here. Unlike Silas or Haplea, he's not as easily replaceable. Wish him the best of luck.
    2) Khairi Fortt- Just a weird one. Cal really has no better chance of making a bowl game than we do, but bowl games are the only reason I could see him leaving. He wasn't a starter but would be next year. Takes away quality future depth.
    3) Don't care about the rest. Easily replaceable if no one else leaves (yes, even Redd and Brown). MAYBE Buckley b/c of DB depth but I'm not losing too much sleep over him. Same with Pollard.

  • I think Pollard is biggest loss. I think Fera is 2, but not as bad as people think. Remember there's a new kick off rule, so that minimizes his impact there.

Rest? Eh. I think Belton surprises.

  • Different lists depending on whether assessing direct on field impact on psychological perceptions created:

From a psych perspective, and continuing the cloud going froward, Redd was by far the worst. His defection gave anyone else considering doing so the juice to do so. Had he stayed, that would have supported the message BOB, Rise and Rally, Zordich, Mauti, Hack, AB, et. al, were all putting out. Brown would be second on that list. None of hte others who have quit on their teammates would have the same effect as Redd. As far as on field impact, the biggest losses to date would be:

    1. Douglas - quality player at a position of need and a 4 year loss
    2. Pollard - quality player at position(s) of need; 4 year loss
    3. Fuller - quality player at a position of need 9by the time he gets here) and a 4 year loss. Was he raised by parents? Seems very weak-minded based on his behavior the last week.
    4. Fera - like losing two players at once. Good at both. Big drop to alternates.
    5. Nowicki - would have at least provided OL depth for 3 years.
    6. Redd - Very good back who may have stayed two more years. Had he stayed, we may have lost Lynch and/ or Dukes and/or ZZ, though. Good kid who could have been a Penn State legend. Bizarre decision, IMO.
    7. Brown. Only one year left. Not that much better than the other options. Another bizarre decsion, IMO. I guess he wanted to feel like he was good enough to be wanted. Whatever ....
    8. Bolden or Haplea - barring several injuries at their positions, neither would have ever made an impact except at practice.

Damn right. You are either with is or get the eff off the ship. Let's move forward with the warriors and leave the rest for the sharks.

I have to agree here! The men that remained are the men I care about.

These are the next generation of Penn State...They are Penn State, not the ones that left.

    AGREED. ^^^^^

And re: this subject, the biggest loss was Redd. Not for what he could do on the field / years left / spot on the depth chart / etc.

I absolutely think that if he stayed and was the leader he was perceived to be, a few of these transfers and de-committments don't happen. Negative publicity, rats jumping off a sinking boat, follow the lemming issue.... his activities were very closely watched by many and when he bailed, I think it started the trend.

Alright buddy, I know some people like being stubborn after being let down, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking the loss of Ryan Nowicki will have a bigger on-field impact than Silas Redd and Justin Brown. He hadn't even cracked the Springball 3 deep. Silas would give us 2 more thousand yard years (yes I know belton, lynch, and dukes may replace him fine, but they have yet to prove themselves so you can't be sure). Brown would only give us 1 year, but a productive one likely with 700+ yds. Nowicki might maybe sorta have a shot at staring a game or two his senior year if the slots fall in place.

That said, it really makes no difference because there's no value in mourning the past if it doesn't help you in the future.
