Oakman facing charges

  • Wow... I knew it was this, but hearing what was at stake- less than 10 bucks worth of items... Just makes you shake your head even more... Just... Wow... I heard he is on film too... All 6'9 of him...

State College, PA - Penn State Football: Shawn Oakman Faces Charges in Pollock Commons Incident

Former Penn State defensive end Shawn Oakman, dismissed from the football team last month, has been charged with disorderly conduct, harassment and retail theft, according to university police.

  • Damn that is sad. Also, I used to work at that place in pollock commons. The only issues I ever had were disappointing students when they came in looking for condoms. I could of made a nice chunk of change selling them on the side. Ironically, it was the cashier in this case that could of used some protection.

  • He is lucky he "only" got 3 summary charges, it sounds like he came damned close to catching a felony robbery charge. When you use physical force to commit a theft, you can be charged with robbery. I think it's a good use of discretion by the PD, it probably could have been worse for him.

Agreed. I like that he has a hard a$$ mentality and isn't taking any crap. Glad to see that carry over.

I agree. But in this case, I don't see any coach giving him a second chance. At least not my idea of a Penn State coach anyway.

I'm not sure Joe would have done the same thing particularly if the kid had been a starter. I don't think BOB will give starters/stars preferential treatment. Or at least I hope he doesn't.

Really? I recall Ed Johnson getting a second chance for an incident that seemed a lot more serious than this. Or how about Scirrotto and the gang?

So, are you saying Joe Paterno isn't your idea of a Penn State coach?

For all the trouble football players get into I hardly classify this as a major thing. I mean he shouldn't have done it but I think all PSU football fans have followed incidents ALOT worse than this and the guys were still on the team. They may have gotten into trouble but they didn't get the boot. Part of me is worried that if this is what it takes to get thrown off the team there might be alot of guys hitting the street....

Ok, sure whatever. Sorry my opinion sucks.

  • All I can say is "WHY?"

Doesn't he receive a meal plan as part of his scholarship? Its not even like he did it someplace downtown where he couldn't use his meal plan.

  • If you're the type of guy who would use being 6'9" / 270 to bully some minimum wage making student at a register so you can save $8... AND DO IT ON CAMERA.... you're obviously too stupid to finish college anyway... and generally you're a dick.

It was 5pm!!! Was he high? drunk?.... I mean I know I've started early somedays when I was his age... but if he was dead sober and made this decision of his own cognition, I'm actually very pleased that he was thrown off the team. He should be expelled, charged, etc. I have no tolerance for people like that. I evict them regularly.

  • Hopefully this young man will learn a lesson. What a shame to lose out on something because of a measley 10 bucks. Sad part is someone probably would have loaned him the money.

I don't even know why he would have needed someone to loan him money. I am assuming his scholarship includes room and board, and he could have used meal points there. So unless he had already burned through all his meal points, he should have been able to pay for it perfectly fine.

  • The Scirotto thing was by far the worst. That was home invasion and he used his position as a PSU football player to get off easy. If I did that I would still be serving time. That showed to me that football was all that mattered to a lot of people in HV. Perhaps Freeh will discover some of this, but I am sure his report will be examined by our lovely BOT first and thrown under the rug, especially because they approved his hiring and his paycheck for doing this.

...and if you're not down with that, then I got 2 words for ya.."suck it!!"

A lot of athletes blow through their meal plans rather early. What you need to do is make buddy-buddy with other students who have a meal plan but don't use it up.

That will turn out to be the most expensive sandwich he has ever laid his hands on if he were to continue in school here or anywhere without a athletic scholarship.
