OT's

  • I would think Cadogen and Alosi would both be switched to OT. It amazes me how thin we are there and it looks like we won't get any true OT's this year. Are there any commits that could play OT - all seem kind of short...maybe Austin Johnson?

  • Cadogen will also most likely make the full time switch there as well. He practiced there on and off last year and it is his natural position.

Nowicki is a guard. I think Shrive will move back to RT.

Next yr, I see the DC as...
    RT:
    1. Farrell
    2. Shrive
    LT:
    1a. Smith
    1b. Gress

I also wouldn't be surprised to see Kolb end up at RT and Cadogen at LT on the 3rd team. As far as the incoming recruits, both Johnson and Pollard could eventually be OT's, as well as James with the improved S&C program.

Alosi should stay at DT. That will be his best position moving forward.

I think Johnson and Pollard are both interior linemen on either side of the ball. Real OTs here, no more shifting a guy who doesn't have the feet out to OT.

relying on Shrive to provide depth at Tackle is kind of crazy...i don't care who is the strength coach i don't think he has the genetics to gain the needed muscle

Why do you think Nowicki is a guard??

We don't have the luxury of being picky. On the surface, those are guys who 'could' play the position despite certain physical limitations.

What makes you think he has the muscle to play internally?

Nowicki is a tremendous puller, and is best suited for inside. I do agree that it's too early to fix him into a definite spot though. Most of these guys are going to get mixed up a lot in the spring. Our current opinions of them really don't matter much...all about to change. We'll know more after the spring.

Johnson maybe, don't see it with Pollard. Also have a hesitation taking guys who
haven't played OT in HS and switching them there.

Recruit OTs next year. Easier to kick a guy to OG than vice versa.

Diddy - I like what Shrive does off the field but i don't think he has the muscle to play inside or out. The good thing is like you said we will know more after spring and its great having a veteran OL coach with a fresh set of eyes evaluate them.

Thanks. For some reason I had him at OG. Been awhile since I saw his tape.

Perhaps, he just moved there for his senior season, but I know he was there this year. A while back, when pushed for his opinion, SJ said that he thought LT would ultimately be Pollard's best position. He said that he's not as tall as the prototypical LT (6'3ish), but he has a tremendous wingspan and very good lateral quickness with his feet. He thought that he'd do well at DT also, but IIRC, LT was his hypothesis.

What I would like to see is a definite system in place where we appear to be building specific tackles and specific guards and specific centers. For years we have appeared to take the 5 best lineman and throw them to the dogs with little or no depth behind them. If someone went down the next best lineman would fill that spot or positions would be shimmied around where someone might move over to fill that position and another guy would fill theirs.

I can understand and respect getting the 5 best lineman on the field, but how about having backup tackles that are capable if a starter goes down. We shouldn't have to grab one of Larry Johnson's back-ups every time we have a starting tackle go down. It never appeared that we did a solid job of initially assessing the position a freshman big man should be at and developing him behind the starters.

Honestly, I tend to have no problem using a mauling OG at OT. As long as he's decent in pass protection, I'm fine with it - he doesn't have to be stellar. Not saying I approve of guys like Barham (seriously, they have to be at least a decent OG to move them to OT at the LEAST), but with the RT position I don't think you always need the prototypical size and athleticism.

No but I'll tell you this, going from a guard spot out to tackle can be shockingly different. I got stuck out there for a few practices when our LT was hurt, and I'll tell you what there's ALOT of space on that edge.

I'll bet. If they do have to move an OG to the outside, let's hope they use TE's, RB's, etc. to help or chip.
