OT: What Are Our Member's Football Playing/Coaching Experience?

  • I'll start it off.

I player football in Junior High (TE and DE) however I had surgery on my chest in 10th grade and couldn't play football again until my senior year. I didn't amount to much because I was way behind in my experience and couldn't get caught up. The fact that I was a "Late Bloomer" didn't help either. My senior year I was 6'-2" and only weighed 150 pounds. Today I am 6'-5" 320 pounds. I wish I was this size back then.

I was the Defensive Coord. for a youth football program(6-13 year olds) for five years before I recently retired. My claim to fame is a 19 game streak where my starting defense did not allow a point to be score against them in Regulation (lost 2 games 7-0 in overtime). These kids are now 10th, 11th and 12th graders and I'm very excited to see how they do this coming season.

  • None. Went to a small, private high school that did not have it as a sport.

  • Played CB until I destroyed my shoulder blade senior year in HS (on senior night, playing for the league championship, actually). Decided to be a normal student at PSU than continue playing at Marist College.
Hopefully I will coach one day.

  • Jr High and HS. I played LB and CB, for a small AA school. If it wasn't for my school size, there is no way I would have played. I was 5'10" and only about 145 at the end of my Sr year of football. Just a terrible athlete (not uncommon in the Berks IC), but my father was a youth coach so I probably knew more than most kids my age.

I probably should have played golf instead. biggrin

  • Played OG and DE/OLB from 9-12th grade. I was pretty undersized at 5'10" 195 so chose to stop my playing career after HS and go to PSU.

Hah! You think that's rough? I played at 5'5 130 lbs. I don't wanna hear your whining!

Yeah, but I had 4.9 speed and hands the size of a 10 year old. smoke

The only things I had going for me was my quickness. Everything else screamed "chess club".

  • Played HS ball, and coached for 3 years. Would love to get back into coaching, but haven't been able to get a schedule (or boss) that will accomodate that.

    I got that beat.

5'9 and roughly 102 as a Sr. in HS. I couldn't get much weight on because of A) my metabolism and B) I wrestled 103, and promptly got my ass kicked by Bob Crawford virtually every time we wrestled Milton.

  • Played LB and either TE or FB depending on the year in HS. Recruited to several Universities up here but played Rugby instead - No schollies up here so I picked the one I was best at.

Went back and coached HS FB for 4 years at my old school - LB and Secondary for 2 and DC for 2 - Semi finals in yr 2 and finals my last two years so we did ok but never won it all. No equivalent here to your state championships back then although they are getting closer now. (Have to say that the good seasons were more a testament to the kids than me, trust me).

Loved coaching FB but work got in the way and then my daughter started doing competitive cheerleading and I got involved with coaching that......very different coaching girls.........

  • Played in high school and college. I volunteer for some local high schools when my business schedule allows.

  • Started playing football my freshman year of high school. In hindsight, I wish I started sooner. I played on varsity a little bit as a sophomore and started as a junior/senior. RB/OLB my FR/Soph. years, then transitioned to WR/S my Jr./Sr. years. I loved the game and seemed to pick it up pretty quick. Even though I'm not playing any more, I love watching game films and analyzing plays and the game.

I coached for a year for a youth program down here in the Harrisburg area. Gave that up due to getting married, buying a house, and grad school. I would love to get back into coaching down the road, if time permits.

  • I played Pop Warner type league for 4 years. Before they had junior high football in our area.Played my sophomore year in high school and thought I was smarter then the parents and didn't play after that.Wish I wouldn't have been such a tool then..I now try to rehash my football talents,or lack there of,every Thanksgiving day morning and Christmas eve morning.lol.[always looking for a few extra bodies if any one on the board lives on the south side of Atlanta.}Still enjoy the game as much as I can.I also enjoy watchnig my 8 yr old play and hope one day to coach him.

  • Does intramural flag football champions count? I didn't think so, but "How much you wanna make a bet I can throw a football over them mountains?... "

Since I know next to nothing, I'm glad there are a few guys around here that do. biggrin

Proudly delusional PSU fan for 40 years.

  • NONE, am deaf myself and my dad played football for Susquehanna University, he wouldn't let me play football growing up, said it's too dangerous.

I grew up surrounded by Penn State fans, neighbors are PSU fans, parent's best friends and colleagues all rave on and on about PSU all the time. I just grew up loving PSU and love tailgating on gameday!!!

  • Gym class hero here. My dad wanted me to get a cross country scholie and refused to let me play football. 6'2" 155 lbs as a senior but I could jump and catch everything. The hs coaches begged me to come out and play since I did well against the team in pickups and gym. They won States wo me :) Played a little rugby at PSU. Was a high school soccer coach and jr. high cross country coach. Was invited to walk on at PSU to run CC.

  • Played and started all 3 years in high school at LB started two years at TE/G. I was 6'3" 225 in high school. Spent a year at D-1AA school playing DE which I hated. Transferred to a PSU branch campus to keep up with school but NCAA considered me a double transfer when I went to transfer to another school so I called it a career and finished my degree at PSU. I was recruited by several MAC schools plus ND, Virginia, Illinois, and Indiana but never got an offer.

I now coach high school football and this will be my 2nd season. One of the best decisions I've made.

Edit: Two best moments in recruiting was when Jay (I know....) came to my high school in PA and then I visited ND on their first day of spring practice where they could hit. It was insane. Also, Tyrone Willingham was one of the smallest men I've ever met.

  • Played OL/DL from 7th to 12th grade. started on the D-line as a sophomore with Josh Hull as the MLB. I was 1st team ICC and 2nd team MAC my senior year. Herniated a disk in my back senior year with 2 games left to play in my career, but decided to play through boy did that hurt. Played some flag football in college as well as started lifting alot and getting in shape.

I now volunteer at my high school coaching the 7th grade team. I am hoping to get a paying college coaching job or something with a team in the near future.

    I'll count it.

Mainly because I was too small in HS and ended up playing soccer instead. At PSU, I grew a few inches and a few pounds of muscle then ended up playing QB/CB/LB in the fraternity IM league in the early 90s. I studied a lot of coaches, (ahem, Madden), for plays and implemented a playbook. Seriously studying a computer game playbook (more than playing - actually dissecting it and implementing tactics) for a few years helped my knowledge tremendously.

With good speed in football and soccer, i was invited to walk-on to the Rugby team but declined for alco... err academic reasons. But I do have a cousin featured in "For the Glory" (Ken Denlinger). And once I threw against Kerry Collins on an arcade game - but he won.
