  • Thanks for the info on his trip today - man I hope he hates it. I think Urbs is smart enough to not trash PSU to a kid who obviously loves it, so I would bet he takes a different approach. More along the lines of what he did with Hernandez in college or "I dreamed we won a national title with you" type stuff.

I'm rooting for a routine flat tire, "delayed" trip, Hackenberg commits and Breneman sees the light.

Yeah, doubt it happens like that either.

I'm rooting for Breneman to eat too much at lunch and throw up on Urban's shoes during their tour around campus.

    And THEN commit to PSU.

I hope he loves it and still commits to PSU. (he's not gonna hate it no matter what)

Urbs won't trash PSU. He's a great recruiter, he knows what to do. I highly doubt he trashed PSU to any of the flips he had last year either. It's such a touchy subject that there's no reason to make a recruit defensive and he knows it. He's fantastic at what he does, unfortunately.

If you think he flipped those kids in the last class without any negative recruiting, there's a bridge I can see out of my office window that I'd like to sell you.

If you think he said "get away from that dumpster fire" you're crazy. Most of those kids loved PSU, but didn't want to go there for some pretty obvious reasons. Urban wouldn't want to offend these kids and he knows exactly what he's doing, so he sold OSU and the positive steps it was taking and not "stay away from PSU."

I think you'd be surprised. The man knows which buttons to press with which kids, and the Cam/Armani group did not want to hear how awful PSU was, they wanted to hear why OSU was great, and they did.

If he didn't at least say something to the effect of, "Who knows what's going to come out of all of that's going on up there?", then he wouldn't be an effective recruiter. There are differnces between "dumpster fire" and subtely getting your point across. Anyone in sales can tell you that, and recruiting is sales.

You are an admirer or Meyer's recruiting skills, I get it. That said, neither you nor I know what he told those kids. I personally have a hard time believing he is the saint on the trail that you seem to.

Shav, I know you like to be the voice of reason when PSU fans spout off, but this just sounds naive.

Did he outright trash PSU? I doubt it. But there's plenty of ways to trash them subtly and negatively recruit Penn State without being overt. Knowing how Meyer operates, there is not a doubt in my mind that he negatively recruited them.

FWIW...I've heard from some reliable places that negative PSU recruiting wasn't a tactic UM utilized. He didn't need to. His rumored appointment at PSU was a primary reason for their commitments/interest in the first place. All the kids who were good enough to play for UM, regardless of where he landed, bolted. It's not coincidental to me.

We disagree. You may be correct and the subtle who knows what's happening there could have come into play. But I would honestly doubt it. Meyer sells himself, and as diddy speculated, these kids considered Urban to PSU as likely.

Meyer could have easily thought it was more likely to be a bad thing to even touch the PSU situation. He probably let everyone else in the world do that for him because it was much more beneficial coming from their mouths (where it didn't have a chance of hurting OSU's chances) than from his own. Dude is savvy as they come.

What's Kav's deal Sean? Is he going to be retained in some capacity after his GA duties are over? I've noticed a few of the kids we're after have mentioned him in their updates.

If kids are building relationships with him and he is let go, i wonder how it'll impact our standing with some of these kids.

He's now visited OSU and ND, I hope he has seen all he needs to to make a final decision.

Checked an earlier tweet he put up about visits and he only had us for junior day, today and March 24th for ND I don't think he made it out there yet.

Was that cat out of the bag to recruits??? I wouldn't think so as you really can't release that ahead of the hire or Joe stepping down. If you can't say...no big deal.

Personally, I don't know how it could be out of the bag to recruits. Somebody somewhere would spill the beans. Something like that can't be kept tight lipped.

diddy...I'm a little confused about this. Are you saying that Cam Williams, who committed way back in like March or April of last year was only interested and only committed because of Meyer? O'Connor wasn't all that far behind. Schutt was in early August - pretty sure that was when Meyer was just rumored to be visiting with PSU. Similar for Reeves, who had plenty of interest when Cam committed to us. I don't see how you could pin these guys' commitments or interest on Meyer in ANY way, shape or form. Spence, yes. The rest, no.

I'm sure Meyer was "recruiting" them for PSU at some point during the year. But there's no way he was the primary reason for their commitments or interest. Don't believe that for a second.

Here's what I know about Meyer: 1) he lies, 2) he is willing to say anything to get a kid to commit. I agree that he's savvy, but I'm not sure why you're assuming certain things ("Meyer could have..." done this, or "He probably..." did that).

Meyer selling OSU and negatively recruiting PSU are not mutually exclusive. It's very possible to do both at once.
