OT: Tell me about State College

Hello there! MSU fan here. My girlfriend and I are coming to State college for the Wisky game. I've never been to Pennsylvania (we both live in Ann Arbor) and she has been to multiple games, but with her parents (PSU grads). My question is, aside from visiting the diner and old main, what is there to do? To be honest I've never traveled this far to see a football game, so advice on where to stay would be welcomed too.

I would check out the Creamery on Curtain Road. Best ice cream even though it is November.

Be prepared to spend $300+/night for a hotel in state college - minimum stay of 2 nights - even at Hampton inns and quality inns, if you can even get a reservation this late. Minimum number of hotels take advantage of football weekends. Suggest looking at hotels 45 minutes - 1 hour outside state college if want more normal room rates.

Wow, really? I was prepared to stay pretty far out so this doesn't worry me.

The Diner is very overrated IMO. It's not bad, but not exactly the best food I've ever eaten either.

Agreed. If you want diner food I found Baby's to be much better. However, feel free to get some grilled Stickies from the Diner! It may not e a typical game atmosphere as this game comes on the tail end of Thanksgiving break, downtown is always fun. Best bars to visit in my opinion, Gingerbread Man, Mad Mex (if the weather is tolerable!) and Cafe 210. My favorite places to eat we're Spats, Allen Street Grille, and the Deli.

I agree with this, but you should still stop in and get some Stickies or take a box home with you. I still crave them once in awhile. Skip the regular food there.

The Gingerbread Man is awful, hit up the Phyrst, the Tavern, the Rathakeller and Cafe 210 is a good place.

The deli is an awesome place to eat! Their Cajun mayo is the best condiment I've ever had. Love mad mex. the autoport hotel:bar is a quieter spot on north atherton if u need a break from crowds. Wings over happy valley for cheap eats. Nittany lion in bar/restaurant has awesome affordable food for lunch and the best lobster bisque you will ever have.

Hahahaha, to each their own I guess. I had it at my wedding there and everytime I've been back, and still love it. Only other place I've had lobster bisque that good was at a hole in the wall seafood shack in Maine.
If you go to the waffle shop, go to the one off of west college ave. just outside of downtown. Easier and way shorter lines. But dont be intimidated by the lines, they move incredibly fast. Also, it's cash only.

Yeah, would look at Altoona first and then you might still even need to go as far as Johnstown to find an affordable hotel.

Thanks for all the tips, good to know the diner is whack, we'll get there midday on Friday and leave Sunday morning, so I want to make the most of our stay. I'm excited to toss aside that 'rivalry' with msu and watch your team beat the vadgers.

Faccia has the best pizza in SC by a country mile (some of the best pizza I've had in the US).
That said, it's well outisde town, so if ass dan (good work on the name) is looking for *classic* State College I'd recommend against Faccia and in favor of downtown/campus spots already discussed.

The Deli and Zeno's are great if you're into craft beer. I'd avoid the Diner unless you just want a stickie.
Since the game is at the tail-end of Thanksgiving break I'm not expecting a lot of students to be back (which is a shame, our senior class deserves a full student section send off for all the adversity they've had to fight through) so none of the bars should be as ridiculously crowded as they normally are on game weekends.

The lobster bisque at the Inn is the best. Whiskers at the Inn is good,
also the Deli and if you want a really good meal with great atmosphere, try Duffy's Tavern in Boalsburg.
