OT: Soccer guys...

  • I wouldn't call Rafael or Fabio world class...just very good for their age. For example, I don't think either one will be as good as Evra, Dani Alves, Sergio Ramos, or Ashley Cole. They look like guys who would end up at the same level as Leighton Baines. And honestly there's nothing wrong with that, you can win a champion's League trophy with Leighton Baines. You don't need world class at every position. Just a few key ones, and then surround them with guys who can get the job done.

Actually, I think Utd easily has the 2nd best team in the world right now, and are set up to be continue to challenge Barca for the next 2 or 3 years, without a requirement for a big investment, if they can get Sneijder. He's the final piece. Obviously Madrid has a huge amount of talent, but compared to Utd and Barca, I think there's something off with them. I believe they still lack that world class striker, though I think perhaps they are being unfair to Benzema. The two Germans are very good though, and can dictate a match. I guess what I'm not sold in is the Argentinian, Di Maria, bringing balance to Ronaldo - and being that other dynamic attacking player to take the pressure off of Ronaldo. With Utd you have Rooney, Ashley Young, Chicharito, and Nani.

MZizzle, with De Gea, the issue is maturity. He's what, 20? There's nothing like the media cauldron that is Man Utd, and we won't know if he's capable until he has a blunder, and we see how he reacts.

Agree with all this. Fabio/Rafael are very good players, but not world class. They are sufficient considering all the ground Nani and Ferdinand cover. It's only a real issue against an elite team like Barca. But then again, that's who they want to beat.

I think De Gea will be great long term, but I wouldn't expect perfection at 20.

Still, Sneijder is who they need to go over the top.

I'm just so stunned at the lack of movement by Chelsea. Even if they land Modric, they have such a crowded front line with no presumeable cohesive combination. They should be sound defensively, but I don't see how all those strikers stay happy.

  • Agree with apooo and diddy on the da Silva twins, they're going to be good but right now are not world class. De Gea was a great get long term as well, I could actually see him playing as well as Joe Hart did for Birmingham City in 09-10 when he was named PFA Keeper of the Year.

You guys covered pretty much everything, I was golfing all day.

Interested to see what side United put out against the MLS all-stars next week, Man U kicked the hell out of them last year hoping to see a better game this year.

  • Not sure if anyone saw this but just add this to the list of reasons I hate Mario Balotelli.

    Play

Mario Balotelli fail showboat shot & subst...

The Mario Balotelli Showboat FAIL (LA Galaxy-Manchester City) July 24th, 2011 There have been some crazy moments this pre-season (Carl Jenkinson's own goal for Arsenal v Cologne on Saturday for example) but the Mario Balotelli Showboat FAIL against the LA Galaxy, and subsequent hysteria, has signalled that the 2011/2012 season is nigh. The bare details are that after half-an-hour of Manchester City's eventual penalty shoot-out win at the Home Depot Centre, Balotelli was played through with a fine run across the line. Super Mario's options were pretty clear, a shot on goal seemed the most obvious whilst Edin Dzeko was square for a pass should the Italian striker wish to pass responsibility to his Manchester City strike partner. Instead, Balotelli pulled out a pirouette followed by a back heel shot that went wide of the LA Galaxy goal, immediately bringing boos from the LA Galaxy crowd. And whilst the home punters were happy to play Balotelli as the pantomime villain as Dzeko reacted in bewilderment, Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini was one angry puppy on the touchline. Seconds later, despite his protestations Balotelli was substituted. But, was Balotelli being disrespectful or was he simply trying to add a memorable goal to what is after all just a pre-season friendly? Or, perhaps Super Mario thought he was offside and his effort wouldn't have counted anyway?

  • I watched the game live...he's a king douche. Although, go YouTube Neymar clips from Santos. He has a patented full follow through fake PK that he gets away with every time.

I also watched the Copa final...Forlan + Suarez = victories.

signature image signature image signature image

    tdiddy

  • Yea, that was a big time dick move on his part.

I was watching it and thought "did he really do that" ... I first assumed I missed the whistle ... then I realize he is just a douche.

He was promptly benched. The thing that really gets me is that once his teamates, the fans, and his coach game him shit he started acting like he heard a whistle.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

  • I just want to clarify about my comment on the Da Silva twins. I never said they were world class now, I said top class players meaning they are very good. In the future I think they have the potential to be world class though. Both are so young (only 21) and already are gaining a great deal of experience. Rio Ferdinand thinks both are terrific players and has nothing but great things to say about them.

The reason they got Aguero was because Tevez wanted out of Manchester, and last I heard City were close to sealing a deal with one of the Brazilian clubs, Corinthians I think?

That deal fell through and the Brazilian transfer window has closed IIRC. They're shopping him to Real, and a few Italian teams, but no takers yet. They want $50 million euros and I'm not sure anyone is going to pay that.

On another note, I read today that Spurs might make a run for Affelay from Barca.

Affelay just got to Barca. I doubt they get rid of him after one year.

I'm hoping Inter will sell Utd Sneijder so they can buy Tevez.

Was just going to post this. I liked Bradley, and thought he got way too criticism, but I thought it was time to go for him.

He also needed 2 miracles to advance in an extremely weak group in the WC. Also obviously failed to advance in the knockout stage. Gold Cup woes did him no favors either.

Results are really what matter, and based on those results he's easily the most accomplished coach in US Soccer history. He got screwed in the WC by horrible officiating - which is why those miracles were needed.

Honestly, I wanted him gone because I thought the program had gone stale under him - but he was a very good coach for us. He can be both.

  • Rumor about Lippi becoming the next head man...certainly wouldn't mind a former World Cup champ coming here.

I'd rather someone younger and more connected to the US. Kilnsman has to be the #1 guy. Lippi certainly wouldn't be bad, he has accomplished so much with Italy, but I'm not sure he'd do well with our team.

  • Glad to hear Bradley is done. I would have gone in a new direction after the WC, but at least they did not let this drag on too much further. My preference is to try a European coach that would bring a fresh approach to U.S. soccer.

  • Grant Wahl just tweeted..."US Insider: 'You're not going be surprised' by the identity of the new coach".

Not to mention, a few more places are saying it's Klinsmann...which would make me VERY happy, along with about 80-90% of the USA soccer following.
