OT: Soccer guys...

  • ManU agrees to transfer fee for Wesley Sneijder from Inter. My heart just sank...really hoped Chelsea would nab him over Modric. Now Modric is a necessity with Essien already out for the year (again). ManU has done a nice job rebuilding this year with Ashley Young, Phil Jones, De Gea, and Sneijder.

  • I have a cousin who is a huge Spurs fan and he is less than thrilled about Modric wanting to jump ship. It will be another Chelsea Man U race this year, but I'd give Man U a pretty big lead with the addition of Sneijder.

I can understand that from the Spurs perspective. They really burned themselves by not making the UCL top 4 last year. The top guys want to play UCL, and I think Modric would stay if that were the case. If your cousin is angry now, wait until next summer when Barca makes a $40 million bid for Bale. Worse yet, think about what Barca will look like with Alves and Bale as their RB and LB. My God.

  • Anyone watch the manU vs new England match last night? Manu is loaded ... The subs would be MLS superstars.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

  • Unfortunately Manure IS loaded. (I am a Liverpool fan.)
I don't think Bale fits into Barco gameplan. He makes long runs with the ball.

  • ManUs second string isn't that great. MLS is just that bad, and not to mention, NE is the 2nd worst team in the league.

I'd agree with that. Bale needs to stay in the EPL as Barca is all about posession and they are insanely good at it. Bale is a freak who can run up and down the field, but I'm not so sure he fits into that style of play. Barca makes the game look to easy.

BTW...speaking of Barca if you caught the Japan vs. Germany WC quarterfinal, you would see that Japan is similar to Barca in terms of knocking the ball around. I missed the semi-final match against Sweden, but Japan impressed me with their posession and short passing game. The US may be in for a bit of trouble if they are chasing the ball all day long on Sunday.

They want him as the Dani Alves equivalent on the left side. He obviously wouldn't be making the same runs with Barca. IMO, if he adjusts to the role, he'd be a stud LB in that scheme. He'd also give them a little more size in the box with Pique. Preliminary talks have already occurred, and if he's healthy this year, I'm pretty confident Barca will make a big run for Bale next summer.

We've been far too content to relinquish possession, and Japan appears to be the best possession retaining team in the world currently. They played a tremendous match against Germany, and put the throttle down in the 2nd half against Sweden. One of our prevailing advantages will be our size in the air...particularly with Wambach. However, we can't be content to allow Japan to hold the ball for 60+% of the match, or else they will win.

It was posted as the lead story on goal.com a few moments before I posted here. Weekly wage had yet to be negotiated.

Thats what I saw too, and you can't really believe any english transfer rumors until they appear on the club's official site. And I honestly don't know where Sneijder would play, they just signed Ashley Young and have Nani on the other flank. Unless they play him as an attacking midfielder behind the strikers, but that would leave only one midfielder to hold. I'd gladly take him on Arsenal.

Sneijder is either going to play as a central midfielder alongside either Fletcher or Carrick or Ferguson will have to drop Chicharito and play Rooney as the lone striker with Sneijder as an attacking midfielder.

LOL...Arsenal isn't putting out that type of cash. Theyre struggling to hold on to Nasri and Fabregas.

Sneijder is the replacement for Scholes in central midfield. Nani, Young, Giggs, and Park rotate on the wings. Their central midfield the weak spot of the team...Fletcher, Carrick, Valencia, Anderson, etc. There's not an elite player in that group. You put Sneijder in the middle and they have enough talent up front, on the wings, and in the back 4 to potentially compete with Barcelona. Hopefully, it falls through and Chelsea swoops in.

Correct...my mistake. He looked more like a free safety against Barca with all those reckless challenges.

Their subs make more than most entire MLS payrolls. Financially MLS is on par with a low-end European league, and the talent level probably isn't all that different.

  • FWIW, I consider myself a Man Utd...interested party. It's mostly down to Sir Alex - I think he's amazing for the sport, and I love the way he gets his teams to play. Always attacking, always entertaining, no egos, team first. There's a ton of stories about how players absolutely love to play for him, and how Man Utd is more like a family than a club. I still rememeber a story about Dong (a chinese internetional, very young) when he was very young there. One day Sir Alex came into Carrington and found out that he was eating lunch by himself. Well he called up Rio, Scholes, etc. and absolutely reamed them out for allowing that to happen. He very much wants EVERYONE in the club to feel like one family.

I have no idea why I even wrote all of that, except to say that I've followed Utd for quite a while now haha. While I think Schniejder is absolutely a target of Utd, I'm not sure they'll be able to get him. IF they do, this how I see it playing out.

    -----------------------Someone, probably not Kuschak----------------------------
    -----------------------------Rio-------------Vidic----------------------------------------
    ----------Fabio---------------------------------------------Evra-------------------------
    -----------------------------Fletcher-----------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------Sniejder-----------------------------------------------
    --------------Valencia------------------------------------Nani---------------------------
    ----------------------------------Rooney-------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------Chicharito----------------------------------------

In Europe, I believe he would drop Nani, and throw in Carrick. Rememer that he loves to rotate his players as well.

  • While I'm a Chelsea fan, everyone has respect for Sir Alex. If ManU can land Sneijder, they'll be serious contenders in Europe. If not, they'll still be favorites in EPL but they won't have the firepower to match Real or Barca IMO. What's to their advantage in EPL is the solidarity you mention. Chelsea and Man City both have too many disconnected pieces...skilled players and big names who don't necessarily fit together. City is a revolving door...now Tevez and Adelbayor want out with potentially Nasri and either Higuain or Benzema coming in. Too much overhaul every year. Chelsea needs to figure out what the heck it wants...rebuild or try to salvage what's left of its aging pieces. Liverpool is promising, but needs Gerrard fit. Arsenal could be dismantled by September. Again, Alex brings stability that no other club has. It's what sets ManU and Barca apart.

I think they could take Real Madrid to be honest. The Galacticos are a bit overrated. But no one is beating Barca when they play well until they break up Xavi and Iniesta. I now consider those two the best players in the world, after watching Messi struggle in the Copa. His goals are clearly a function of the freedom that;s granted to him by the central midfield pairing. When it's all said and done, I think we're going to look back and yes, be amazed by Messi, but will give greater credit to Xavi and Iniesta.

I don't care who Utd purchases...so long as Barca has those 3, and especially those 2 controlling the flow of a match, they won't be better. If you cloned Pirlo, and paired the two clones together, that's about the closest I can think you can get.
