OT - Penn State Collector's Thread

  • The one thing I still visit TOS for is their Collector's Corner board. It doesn't get a whole lot of action, but it's always interesting to see what other people collect.

So I was curious what everybody else has/collects. Personally, I've been getting the entire team to autograph a poster/football every year for the last 5 years. I'm also working on my autographed card collection (rookie cards in PSU uniform). Someone on Scout compiled the list of every PSU certified auto and I'm working my way backwards in time. I'm around 1999 right now and the cards are getting harder to find/more expensive.

Last time I went to Lift for Life, I made a couple of custom 8x10's to have autographed. Paul Jones liked the one I had for him so much, he took a picture of it lol. I've also collected the PSU posters and Citizen Banks buttons, since I really got into collecting stuff (since 2005).

Anyway, the other reason I made this thread is because I'm curious if any of you have any recommendations of a football case for my Joe-auto'd football?

  • I wouldn't necessarily call it a collection, but I have found/purchased all sports illustrated magazines that have Penn State on the cover. I have had them framed and they hang on my den wall.

  • I was just out looking for a frame for my Penn Stater mag with Joe on the front. An idea where to get a frame for this or should I have a custom frame done? Thanks.

Go to a few sports autograph sites they have specific holders for magazines to preserve them and display them at a much cheaper price than custom framing job. Sorry reds brother

  • Being an AE major, I have started getting autographs on a PSU hardhat. So far I only have Cappy though, because I am reserving it more for the big time guys.

Thanks Trock...good idea. I'll check it out.

  • I have a sports room and I collect all kinds of autographs. I have mostly boxing, but I am always growing my Penn State collection. I have a Franco Jersey, a Poz Jersey, a Sean Lee Jersey and Kyle Brady Jersey, an LJ helmet, an M-Rob helmet, a Deon Butler signature and above all my JOE PA football. I have somewhere around 60 autographs from all types of sports.

As far as your question about a case to put your Paterno ball in, there are a couple of options or you can customize your own thing. You can order glass cases online that have a Nittany Lion etched on it already. There are also sellers on ebay that have some Paterno name plates with his record and things of that nature on it. You could make your own set up that way. There is also a Joe Paterno football stand that I've seen that you could set it on, although I understand you wanting it to be protected. Maybe you could put in on a stand in a case. Those are some options that I know of.

As long as we are on the subject, I am from Kentucky and I have such a hard time finding or getting anything Penn State. I come up once a year as it is between an 8 and 10 hour trip. I have been trying so hard to find a Ki-Jana Carter autographed football or helmet. I am 25 years old, so he was my childhood idol. I can't find anything that isn't just a card or a Bengals autograph. If you could either help me out or point me in a direction I would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance and I hope I have helped.

Already have a stand, thanks for the suggestions. There was a case on ebay I like a while back but I haven't seen it in awhile, so I guess I'll just keep checking.

Regarding the Ki-Jana auto, email the guy that runs charitysignings.com. He could probably help you out.

  • Nice to see other AE's on here, I graduated in 2001. I worked on the Beaver Stadium expansion and have aerial photo's as well as a Barton Malow/Alexander hard hat with a bunch of PSU stickers on it. Have them framed (except the hardhat) and on my wall at work. Being that I live in CA these days, there are always a few people who strike up conversation about it.

My wife got the frame and matting at a craft shop, nothing custom. The ones from a sports autograph site are probably better for preservation, but the craft shop ones work fine for me. They'll last longer than I will. lol

  • Starting to build my collection.

    I have a JoePa signed minihelmet;
    A signed Picture of Scrap;
A signed Jack Ham photo that was personally signed to my grandfather; only flaw its a Steelers jersey not PSU (however, I am a steelers fan so no worries)
    A signed Cappelletti Jersey; and,
A bunch of magazines, which needed framed.

  • I collect Pez lol. Some are worth decent money though

  • Im always looking for stuff to add to my Penn State bar room. So far I have a pretty nice collection. Right now I found an old Popcorn Maker. Im Painting it Blue and White and I'm going to make it a show case for my Joe Pa autographed football. Should be pretty cool.

  • For those who collect cards with players in their PSU uniform like me.

So far I see auto cards for Still, Lynn, Moye and Powell. I also see Green has a card. It's good to see Upper Deck already has cards out this year. They didn't put them out in wide variety last year for a while. I still hate Press Pass lost their license.

    PSUfan28

  • I have these and a handful of good looking RC autos from over the years. I really need to get back to LFL this year to get a football signed from the top 10 guys or so. Those damn helmets cost too much plus I don't really need three.

  • I collect mostly baseball and pro football mem. from players I was a huge fan of growing up. I have a 500 HR ball pre-steroid era which I believe has 11 signatures. I have a signed Bob Gibson ball, and few other Cardinal signatures since they've been my team since I was around 5. I also have a few Football HOFamers signatures. I'm a Chiefs fan and have Montana's signature and a Derrick Thomas signature. I have a football signed by HOF RB Jim Brown. I have a pair of boxing gloves signed by Mohammed Ali.

  • This thread is a great idea. I always enjoy seeing other peoples collections.

I've got quite a large collection of autographed items. I'll have to take pictures of it all and post them. Maybe I'll do that this weekend. I've got autographed mini-helmets, photos, jerseys, etc. Tons of other generic memorabelia too like magazines, coke bottles, unsigned pics, etc.

As a side note, I'm beginning to lay the ground works for designing my mans cave and how I want it set up. It will probably be a year or two till it's done since I have to finish the basement still but once it's finished, I will finally be able to display all of my stuff and have a place to watch my games, relax, etc.

  • My grandfather was from Pittsburgh, back in the 50-60's he actually did some handyman type work for the family the owned the Pirates, either at that time, or possibly they had already sold them I am not sure..., believe it was the Dreyfuss family...
When I was about 6-7 and really getting into baseball and collecting cards, etc he handed me a grocery bag full of baseballs one time... I noticed they were signed, but didn't pay much attention... took them home, and pulled one or two out and my friends and I played catch, bounced grounders on the dirt roads in front of our houses, etc... the rest of the bag went into the basement, and I forgot about it for a few years...
Couple years later, when I was maybe 11-12, I was seriously into collecting baseball cards, and my grandfather asked me "What ever happened to those balls I gave you that were signed by Honus Wagner and Pie Traynor?"... I about had a heart attack... Anyway, I found the remaining balls and in the bag were not one, but two Honus Wagner signed balls... one right in the middle of the "sweet spot", and they each also had multiple other signatures... One ball was a team ball from about 1959, that includes Roberto Clemente, Elroy Face, Bob Friend, all kinds of great Pirates like that... Another was a Ralph Kiner that was personally inscribed to "Patsy"...
Anyway.. for some insane reason, I sold one of the Wagners shortly after college for a couple grand to take a vacation... but still proudly display the Clemente and the Wagner that is on the sweet spot... there was no Pie Traynor, so I have always assumed that one got trashed playing ball with it in front of my house... god only knows what other signatures were lost on the balls I used... and god only knows why my parents let me play with him, and also the Kiner ball has my "signature", in red pen from when I was about 6 years old... I guess I wanted to sign a ball too...

  • I have a lot autographed from the '05 and '08 B1G Championship teams.

I have Panoramic picture of the Orange Bowl framed along side all of the home game tickets from the '05 season--it's huge and takes up a nice chunk of my PSU-Room wall.

Also have a B1G Championship Banner that has Joe's signature as well as many of the players from that team.

I have a football signed by both D-Will and Justin King.

Finally, I have a scrap book from the '05 season which Joe signed on the inside cover.

Fortunately, I witnessed both of Joe's autographs myself. It means nothing for resale value since I don't have certificates or anythign like that, but I KNOW they're real which is all I care about.

There are other things that I have that are great, but those are the big ones.

That's the truth. A lot of my signatures would have no way of validating, but I know they're real and since I have no intention of selling them what difference does it matter. I still remember crawling under people at a celeb golf tournament to get Marino's autograph when I was 5. Haven't stopped collecting stuff since.

  • I will put this in here because it really doesn't deserve it's own thread but I'm walking down college last Friday and Tom mairs has his pictures out. He has a picture of the teams huddling together before the Nebraska game. I really like his stuff and that was quite an emotional moment but I have no idea why anyone would buy that. Reminders of that week are the last thing I would ever want in my basement

Growing up, Roberto Clemente was my all time favorite baseball player. Signed Clemente stuff these days are hard to come by and are quite costly, I assume both those signatures are worth some coin.

You could probably get them validated by a signature expert, but that might cost a few bucks. But like you said, they're not for sale, and that's cool. I would also suggest to everyone to get some sort of insurance on your stuff. Check with your insurance rep.I don't think it costs that much. Good luck on your collections!
