  • So how do the playoffs work?

    PSUfan28

  • Trying to figure this out, give me a second..

    Andrew Dzurita

  • Nevermind, I figured it out. I'm not a big fan that Washington/Pittsburgh/Philly won't play each other past the quarterfinals.

  • I think the realignment is a good thing. The fact that there are 4 conferences now will be enjoyable to me.

  • Yea trying to wrap my head around how the playoffs will work. You can have two "eastern" or "western" conference teams playing in the finals?

Why they have to go messing with a good thing!

    Porter14

  • From an article from TSN:

"The top four teams in each Conference would qualify for the playoffs. The first-place team would play the fourth-place team; the second-place team would play the third-place team. The four respective Conference champions would meet in the third round of the Playoffs, with the survivors playing for the Stanley Cup."

    Here's the link.

NHL approves new four-conference format for next season

The NHL's Board of Governors has approved a new four-conference format. Two conferences will have eight teams, and two will have seven. Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa remained grouped together along with Boston, Buffalo, Florida, and Tampa Bay. Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver will play together in a Pacific-based group with Anaheim, Colorado, Phoenix, and San Jose. Winnipeg will be the lone Canadian team in an expanded Central Division.

  • As a big Caps fan will build on the local rivalries almost guaranteeing playing Phila or Pitt in the playoffs each year, but will miss those eastern conference final matchups.

This is what I'm looking forward to the most. A focus on local rivalries. Should be a lot of fun for the fans.

  • Sharks/Wings in the finals, please.

    PureRockFury

  • First two rounds will be good every year with good rivalries every year and the last two rounds should have some new matchups. Makes divisional games more important with seeding now. Also means that each fan base gets a chance to see every team every year. Doesn't matter for a lot of teams but seeing Sid or #8 in a Canadian market is a big deal, easy sell out for the home team.

Really surprised Detroit didnt end up back east though. They have been pushing for that for a while. I think this is as much about stimulating weak markets with something new as it is about anything else.

  • I hate conferences and divisions in all sports... just take the top 16 teams regardless of geography and let them play... Nothing bothers me more than when one conference/division is alot better or worse than the others and really bad teams make the playoffs or good teams get left out.

The Caps don't make it to the Eastern Conference finals as it is, so this shouldn't be a major blow.

That part is nice, but playing Buffalo and Boston the same amount of times as you play SJ and LA seems silly scheduling.

I predict it is not too many years before this 4 conferences thing gets blown up.

  • I like Conference 'D' the best, all of the teams are very close in relation to each other, get to see the Rangers take on a bunch of local rivals.

Very interested to see how they name the conferences. Do they go geographic regions, back to the old school names (Norris, Smythe, Adams, Patrick), or new names?

I would love for the Flyers to return where they belong - the Patrick division.

This "conference" will be phenomenal to watch. I could do without the Canes, but oh well. Whoever makes it out will certainly earn it. Now this isn't to crap on the other conferences, but the close proximity and rivalries preserved in this division make it the most intriguing if you ask me. Couple that with how large of a market share they have and I love the new conference.

How about fans of teams not in this division, what do you guys think? (I'm looking at you PureRock...)

  • As a Stars fan, I like it.

Its always nice to play the Red Fags, and the Blackhawks and Wild will be welcome foes as well.

It still doesn't sit right with people in Minnesota that the owner left for greener pastures in Dallas. I'm sure that would be a fairly easy rivalry to stir up.

I'm afraid that division will be dominated by a couple teams and the others will fall further into oblivion. The Red Wings are the big power and the Stars/Hawks are the next tier, but after that, it's pretty weak.

  • I think the realignment is good, but they still didn't address one of the major issues. Why do so many teams make the playoffs? It's ridiculous, all you have to do is not completely suck and you're in the playoffs. The MLB is the only league that has the fairest playoff format (Although I would make it 7-7-7 instead of 5-7-7) The NFL is fine the way it is except maybe the seeding with the home field. The NHL and NBA have a terrible format. The playoffs take over six weeks, way too long.

Your totally right, I forgot the 98' season was abandoned and never counted, especially against Buffalo.

As a Wings fan I like it also. It will be fun ensuring some of our long time rivals never reach the conference finals.

Nashville has done a pretty decent job with developing their talent, and they're not a terrible squad. Winnipeg also has some quality talent. That being said, I think you're right. I'm just excited to play the Hawks more often, and I know a few Wild fans who never got over the Stars moving south.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs are the greatest sporting event in the world. Making it shorter would be one of the greatest tragedies in the history of the mankind.
