OT: NHL Playoffs Thread

  • Not making excuses, just a lot of peeps, Philly (me) and Pens fans alike agreeing that Rinaldo is a loose cannon. FTR, I liked Asham until sunday. Unexpected, even for a "goon". Seen him get chippy and drop the gloves before, but that took it to a new level. I don;t even know what to say about Neal, he should have gotten more than a game for 2 very cheap shots. Is this game over yet.?...Let's move on to game 5.

That was not an excuse at all. I was pointing out the true fact that the garbage the Pens pulled last game has forced the refs to call this game too tightly and it has completely ruined the flow and pace of the game. Where in that statement did I say anything about that being an excuse for the way the Flyers are playing???? Its the Flyers' fault that they were unable to adjust to that and the goaltending is completely at fault for the score.

I do recall plenty of Pens fans on here blaming the refs directly for the game one loss after the missed offsides call. Fact.

    WRONG.

Mentions about penalties in the 1st game:

CZ148: Not an excuse...just making it clear that the officiating has been poor towards both teams thus far. Thus far I have not heard it mentioned on any outlet that it shouldn't have been icing.

Whiteout: Unfortunately all I get is Comcast/Flyer announcers. They've been saying that the penalties shouldn't have been penalties, and the Penguin no penalties should be penalties, and say that the icing/offsides have cancelled each other off.
Flyers have gotten away with too many men on the ice 2 times now.

Lots of posts about how the Flyers beat the Pens and saying Fleury sucked.

You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game, life or football-the margin for error is so small. -Pacino

  • Flyers did beat the penguins. And fleury has what? Over a 5 GAA and a .769 save percentage? He sucked. He has played solid from what I have seen (missed first period).

Win game 5 and put some pressure on Philly in game 6

As a Flyer fan I'm embarassed by these defensive breakdowns (skaters and goalies included) and by Rinaldo.

Frustration wasn't an acceptable excuse for Neal and certainly isn't for Rinaldo either.

Here's hoping we see a clean 3rd period leading into game 5.

Agree. Let's play hockey. It's much more exciting without the cheap shots.

Rinaldo's behavior was not surprising, except for the sucker punch; but Neal's was very surprising. Not the way to play!

  • I agree lets keep this clean and end the game.

  • There's a perfect example were Kubina and Cook should've just dropped the gloves and got it over with instead of back and forth cheap crap.

Is Grossman OK? What did Simmons do on that play to warrant a misconduct?

Yeah, those two have looked ready to beat the ish out of each other all series.

If any flyers or pens fan ever complains about Ted roof's defense, I don't want to hear it

  • For the second game in a row: The Flyers/Pens scored more in regulation than the Nov. 5th Bama/LSU game

  • At least this game ended with no headshots and unnecessary fighting. Would have been nice to close out on home ice but we'll get em next time.

  • Brutal effort by the Flyers tonight. Bryz looks awful out there. Gotta wonder if that bone chip in his foot is bothering him. But poor gaps between the forwards and defense, no forechecking pressure at all, no emotion. Just awful.

I think we got ourselves a series here folks. Pens look like they got rolling and flyers looked lost. With a young team closing out of the series might be a lot harder than people think. As a flyers fan, consider me officially worried.

Its all on Bryz. The team lost all confidence in the goalie(s) and it just took all the air out of the arena. He MUST steal a game or it won't matter if we win this series or not...no way we make it any further.

It's on Bryz AND the defense. He lost confidence in them, they lost confidence in him. For good reason, both have sucked all series, luckily the Pens' was worse games 1 through 3.

classic philly fan. dude step back, take a deep breath, dont think about the game and come back tomorrow.

the flyers are still in a very envious position (3-1 series lead). they have a high character locker room, a coach that can light a fire in their ass, and a mental edge in pittsburgh. The flyers havent been a good home team all year! we know that and im sure they know it too. it's not time to worry yet. i dont know why (because god knows theres no precedence so far) but I think the flyers come out very good defensively on friday, call me crazy.. maybe im just an optimist

    step back from the ledge.

If Pittsburgh wins game 5, and that is a big IF, and IF Fleury plays like he did in 2008, 2009 and last year, the Pens get to game 6 in Philly with confidence, then it's a series.

It's 3-1, and it's not a series yet. It'll be a series if and only if, Pittsburgh wins game 5.

if they are fortunate enough to get to a game 7, it's anyone's guess, but it's not something Philly wants. It starts with 1, and they got that tonight. They gotta win another one on Friday.

Melrose said: Pittsburgh won 12 games in a row this year, they are more than capable of winning 3 and getting to game 7.

Classic Philly fan? Haha. Maybe. But as a Philly fan I also am guarded about getting my hopes up. I have seen us come back and beat a Bruins team when we were down 3-0. I just have concerns. And I think after you lose a game like tonight if you didn't have concerns then I don't know what to tell ya.

Sure we are still up 3-1. But that old lady called Mo' is a funny thing.

i saw that comeback as well, but theres a reason they only happen every 30 years, its not easy..

i have concerns, as i should, but im not on the ledge by any means of the imagination. holmgren's put together a great team with great character. like george michael said, "gotta have faith!" (gay but idc)

Good friend of mine is as big of a flyers fan as there is. He texted me:

The one thing I didn't want to see is not only the penguins win, but Fleury play well. He thinks Fleury looks like he's getting some confidence back, and could steal game 5.

his next text: I am getting a sick feeling in my stomach. If the Pens get game 5, this is going to go 7 games, and we all know that game 7 is unpredictable.

I agree Fleury might be getting some confidence from some nice saves, but those first 2 goals were pretty soft, but that is usually the way it is with Fleury when he is on his game...Make some amazing clutch saves but leave up a couple softies. Not leave up 8 softies a game and make no amazing saves.

I hear you. I was at my step-sons little league game and it's interesting that his team scored 12, and the Pens scored 10.

I saw the 2nd and 3rd periods and he looked confident. He got out and was aggressive, and he STAYED UP. He didn't immediately go down. He is the key, at some point, he's going to have to steal one if Pittsburgh wants to win this.

It's pretty obvious why Simmonds was tossed. The zebras weren't going to let it get out of control. Simmonds and Vitale were clenched; jawing back and forth and ready to go. If you think Simmonds didnt warrant a misconduct, neither did Vitale.

Not sure who that favors. Tonight was very tight - the tightest I've seen.

I will be interested in seeing tomorrow's Phoenix v. Chicago game. That is a VERY VERY chippy series and lots of bad blood. Smith gets run by Shaw; Torres runs Hossa ... that can get out of control very quickly.
