OT: NBA Playoffs Thread

  • I'm a huge basketball fan, and a Knicks fan, but I wanted to start a thread about the playoffs in general - for my money the toughest playoffs in sports, though I'm sure others would say Hockey and have a good argument for it.

Anyway, I'm watching this Heat - Pacers game, and if LBJ ever came with an 0fer 1st half in a pivot game 3, and continued to suck it up in the 2nd...the internet would be in full meltdown in calling for him to get cut.

Elsewhere, I don't think there's much drama. I think Cs, Thunder, and Spurs are all going to win their series in 6 or under. But this Pacers - Heat series is fascinating because of Bosh's injury, and whatever's afflicting Wade. Not to mention the Pacers have such a well balanced team.

  • Also, Wade + Battier = 1/17. Woof.

Most demanding on the body and mind. The NFL are all 1 off games. NBA/Hockey have a series of 7 game series, and these games are always physically brutal and demanding. You can't be either weak of mind, body, or endurance if you want to excel here. You also can't luck your way into a title.

    EDIT

I'm rooting for the Sixers. Hate the Cs. I just don't think they have the offensive punch to keep up with Boston.

  • The Heat without Bosh, and Wade playing like he's 55 years old, this team is worse than the Cavs when they had LBJ.

Oh, then definitely NHL and it's not even close IMO. Anybody can win in the NHL, there's constant battling, the sport is much more physically demanding than basketball and many games go to long overtimes. I don't see how basketball even compares in toughest. I'd put it at NHL then a huge gap, then NFL (the one game playoff is a much different, but still very demanding, dynamic and the sport is much more physically demanding than basketball as well), then NBA then MLB last obviously.

Luckily, KG isn't typically on like he was in game 3 more than once or twice every 5 games. If he continues playing like that, it's over. If not, which is likely, it's still a series. Also, Rondo is playing out of his mind. He's not a great player by any means (most overrated player in the league possibly as he simply is a bad shooter and passes up easy shots for assists constantly because he can't make the shots) and is shooting well for some reason.

  • Glad to see the Pacers doing well again. Larry Bird really has built (key word) a good team. Through the draft, trades, and even FA. Granger, George, Hibbert, Hansbrough...all mid round draft picks. Collison and Hill through trades, and then getting West for a bargain this offseason...hats off to Larry Bird. He's proven to not only be a great player, but also an excellent mind for the game.

If they ever got a play making PG, this team would be ridiculous. I hope they chase Stevie Nash in the off season, with all due to George Hill & Darren Collison.

Spurs are playing some pretty great ball right now and the Thunder could easily be down 3-1 to the Lakers with one bounce the other way in games 2 and 4. Not saying the Thunder won't win, but they better not overlook the Spurs, who haven't lost in about 40 some days.

Very true. I just think that unless Bosh comes back for the Heat (assuming they make it out of this round of the playoffs) the NBA champ will come from the western conference. With that being said, I think the Thunder can take the Spurs but it will be an interesting series if those to ultimately end up facing off, to say the least.

Youth vs. Wisdom right now with Philly vs. Boston. Very competitive. I keep thinking Paul Pierce has another level he can reach in this series. He's shooting 38% and scoring just 17 a game, and I know the 6ers are playing great D, but...

He dominated game 4. He was incredible that game. I keep thinking the sixers should hold their breath, cause when a celtic is breathed on there's a foul.

Sixers just playing dumb basketball the past 4 minutes though.

  • I'm curious how a playoff team can shoot such poor free throws. 3/9 today, which is obviously below average for the Sixers, but happens all too often.

Brandon Bass (seriously?) and Rando have taken this thing over. Ray Allen, KG, Paul Pierce...all basically controlled. But Bass is going nuts. It's crazy.

Sucks to shut down those 3 (not that shutting down Ray Allen is tough these days) and still have a Celtic going off. Sixers just played a horribly sloppy quarter. They got what they deserved for those 12 minutes.

sixers are just ball watching, not sure what happened to make them lapse on defense so much

I'm more concerned with 55 turnovers last quarter and to star this one, but both trends are awful.

If Evan Turner is going to be playing 40 a night, he needs to be doing more than 10/7/2 a night. They have the same issue as when they lose - they play steady offense, but they simply can not keep up when the Cs play well offensively.
