OT: Long term changes to NFL

  • I ran across this article and found it very interesting. If the players sue due to concussions, new rule changes will make it really boring to watch.

Radical Changes Are Coming Soon To American Football

  • And people wonder why the bounty suspensions were so brutal or why Harrison from the Steelers gets hammered with fines... Goodell has to with all of this coming up now an into the future. It sucks to take some of this out of the game but it happens.

I personally think the lawsuits are crap, you know what you're getting into when playing football. If you don't think that flying into eachother in what amounts to armor at top speeds won't possibly hurt your brain...well your noggin wasn't worth to much in the first place now was it?

  • In 15 years does the NFL look even remotely close to how it looks now? Or does it become like the Pro-Bowl where it's a glorified 7 on 7 drill with the linebacker shouting "1 mississippi....2 mississippi...3 mississippi...BLITZ!!!"

Yup. Who doesn't know that repeated blows to your head isn't a good idea health wise.

Just in case these guys don't know, fire is hot and can burn you and cause severe safe and even death.

Try to fathom the hypocrisy of a Government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured .but not prove they're a citizen

  • Weight limits (players are getting bigger and not getting slower, meaning increased force during collisions), advanced helmets with built in sensors that can detect when a serious blow to the head has occurred (these already exist), and serious rules that punish use of the head in tackling and as a target of tackles.

All practical solutions for the NFL to reduce and monitor head injuries.

  • Anyone else remember when the colleges (primarily Eastern colleges and the service academies) had 150 lb. football. It kind of went away in the 1960's when college football became a huge money game.

At any rate, the rules will change. Every NFL player who ever had a concussion will want a piece of the action (or his surviving heirs). Then college players will go after the NCAA and their respective universities; and then high school players will go after their high schools. The game will be changed and we'll have all women ADs, head coaches, assistants, and officials. The game will become a mere shadow of its former self.

The NFL refuses to recognize change in one big aspect. The size and speed of its players. In that regard, the dimensions of the field have never changed to accomodate. I've had experience in the CFL where the field is longer and wider. It's a much more open game but part of that is the three down rule. The NFL needs to increase the size of the playing area to take into account the increased speed within the same boundaries. That along with tighter enforcement of the "bump" rule.

joe told them already, take the helmets away, and people won't charge head first into everything that moves

I was going to post a quote from a Jim McMahon interview a while ago that said while he deals with concussion related problems, he knew the risks of playing a violent sport, and doesn't blame anybody for it. I was going to point out how it's good to see guys like him take responsibility and show that they understand what they put themselves through, voluntarily.

While googling for the quote, I found articles from last fall that he's changed his stance as he's one of the guys suing over concussion issues. So I guess I can scratch what I had previously thought about him.

That's very true. Look at college hockey compared to pro. There's still bad hits in the pro game, but put a cage on someone, all of a sudden they feel invincible, and the recklessness goes through the roof.
