I see what you did there.

I personally have a handgun to protect my home. It's not practical to ban guns altogether. But is it too much to ask to ban assault rifles? There needs to be a practical limit to the firepower a common citizen can bring to bear. And concealed carry laws like the one that just passed the Michigan House and Senate allowing concealed carry in schools need to go as well.

At some point America needs to ask itself if it's OK with massacres like this one. If the answer is no, it's time to take action as a nation to prevent them from happening. Some type of gun control needs to be on the table along with school safety measures.

YES! This is it. I believe that most folks advocating for "gun control" are talking about limiting the right to own these weapons of mass destruction. Not the common handgun or hunting rifle. Sure...wackos can still kill with knives and handguns...but the casualties would lessen. I know that this is a time to grieve, and I am NOT talking politics here...I am talking about attempting to reducing casualties. What if it were your child? My heart is very heavy at this moment, and the anger that I feel for the fact that a**holes like this killer have easy access to assault weaponry is overwhelming. Come on...we are smarter than this. Let's make it just a little more difficult for the psychos, ok?

    Sigh.

No one wants to make guns illegal, just control them. The same thing they do in Europe where gun violence is almost non-existent and democracy exists and they aren't lorded over by a totalitarian, violent dictator.

Some of you are utterly unbelievable sometimes.

Gun violence may be non-existent, but other violence is not. There's a negative correlation between overall murder rate and gun ownership.

"...the burden of proof rests on the proponents of the more guns equal more death and fewer guns equal less death mantra, especially since they argue public policy ought to be based on that mantra. To bear that burden would at the very least require showing that a large number of nations with more guns have more death and that nations that have imposed stringent gun controls have achieved substantial reductions in criminal violence (or suicide). But those correlations are not observed when a large number of nations are compared across the world." (emphasis added)

"The political causation is that nations which have violence problems tend to adopt severe gun controls, but these do not reduce violence, which is determined by basic socio‐
cultural and economic factors." (emphasis added)

I agree with your take on assault rifles. I work in a profession that requires the need and (hopefully never but sometimes) use of handguns. Above all this people need to be accountable for their actions not an instrument.

Edit this is selfish and wrong to discuss. Thoughts and prayers to the victims and families.

You do realize that a .223 caliber rifle can be a hunting rifle? The twitter picture was used as a shock and awe. As far as I have heard they only mentioned the caliber of the rifle not make/model. SIAP, but if someone knows more details that would be great about make and model? The tweet doesn't even mention the firing mechanism.

Just a side note, the .223 is actually banned in some states for deer hunting because the state worries it is not powerful enough to kill the deer in all cases.

I feel horrible for the family of these children and that monster deserves worse than what he will ever receive for his crimes. My heart and prays go out to the families. However, it is wrong for someone to push an agenda with having specific details on the firearm!

  • Five or six years ago, when I was the Executive Director for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in Connecticut, Sandy Hook Elementary was one of the schools that helped us fundraise in the "Pennies for Patients" campaign. I am fairly certain that I did a presentation at an assembly there. Very scary. Very very sad !!

  • Just posted this to my FB page. This has to stop - it's every bit as much a threat to the average American as "terrorism". Feel free to fire away :-)

    ****************************************************

I have a little exercise for all of my FB "friends": I want everyone to imagine for a moment what would be happening right now if these mass killings were being committed by Islamic terrorists and not our fellow Americans. What would be happening if Al-Queda had planted "splinter cells" that periodically came out of hiding and attacked malls, churches, schools, and office buildings? What would be the reaction? Do you believe we would be as seemingly numb to them as we are now? Would we just accept the status quo, and leave the problem to states and local law enforcement to solve?

You all know the answer. The outcry and calls for action by the military and intelligence communities would be deafening. Our elected officials would be in full outrage mode, and we would be having incredibly tough conversations regarding the gathering of intel on Americans, the balance of civil liberty vs public protection, and methods of stopping the attacks. We would be told that we were at war, and that every other priority took a backseat to protecting ourselves. Yet we've had none of that. Somehow if the enemy is US, and not "THEM" - if they don't wear turbans or pursue communism or some other cause we view as anti-American, we simply aren't as outraged. That needs to stop today - we need to begin thinking about this as a threat to our nation, not just our local communities, and allocating resources accordingly. Yes, I understand the difference between a random of act of violence by an individual and coordinated attacks on America by an organization, and the ramifications of treating the former the same way as the latter. I also understand the challenge of fighting an "enemy" that you can't see. That doesn't matter to the families of the children who died today, though. They don't care what the motivation of the shooter may have been - all they know is that their children are gone, along with the hundreds and hundreds of other families who have lost loved ones in this way in recent years. There are steps that could help to detect and prevent these attacks, if we are willing to take them. Pouring REAL resources into mental health research and funding, for one. Finding ways to help spot these people before they get this far. Dedicating significant additional FBI and intel resources to bring their best and brightest to bear on the problem, and making this one of their top priorities. If we can afford to train thousands of people to to speak Farsi to help combat Islamic terrorism, we ought to able to afford to train a similar number to deal with the particular aspects of this domestic terror, and implement effective strategies in our communities

This isn't simply about mental illness, though; there have been mentally ill people since the beginning of mankind, and yet somehow they didn't go on mass killing sprees in schools and public venues. It's not about guns, either; they're simply the tool, not the catalyst. It's a distinctly modern phenomenon, and it's at least partially about pure evil. It's like we have thousands of little Hitlers and Genghis Khans running around this country who don't have the smarts or the ambition or the opportunity to become powerful, so they act out their genocide fantasies on their friends and neighbors. These were little children - how evil and demented and sick do you have to be to target them? We need a new focus, and we need show the same passion and fervor towards stopping these people as we do towards those who threaten our citizens in other parts of the world.

For anyone still reading, thanks; for anyone who comments, please keep the comments respectful of others. I don't typically post these kinds of serious comments on FB, intentionally. It's not a great medium for debate. My heart breaks for those families though, I can not fathom what that community is going through, and I needed to say this...

    Yea, I'm an academic too.

You're committing a logical fallacy. Like I said, the problem of violence is much deeper than simple gun control. Murders will still happen. Mass murder, by and large, will not. If you wished to disprove that claim, you would need to provide an alternative article.Similarly, your article does little to make a connection between types of gun ownership (another major component of gun control) and murder rates. I would similarly argue against the meaningfulness of a cross-national comparative analysis: as the author notes, the context within which gun control measures are effective are a product of particular socio-demographic and cultural realities. It would be meaningless then to make a claim that because gun control does not work in the Soviet Union that it would not work here, when those socio-demographics and cultural norms are so different.

Good try though. The gun control argument requires a much more nuanced and culturally relative analysis than the one you've provided.

Oh, and there are plenty of conflicting articles for what you linked. Will take you two minutes on Google Scholar to find them. Look for Martin Killias.

I know none of us want to be unemployed, but if my boss told me to go interview elementary school kids mere hours after being attacked by a gun wielding psycho, I'd tell him to go F himself and quit on the spot.

I agree. I saw it first hand when the boy from my street fell in the Dog exhibit at the zoo. The media claims it is their job and duty to get the story...truth is that they just want the publicity and chance to break it first.

There will be plenty of time to tell the whole story.
