OT: Hines Ward Retires

How is that stat correct? Which Bills are in the HOF that were on all 4 SB teams?

Kelly, Smith, Thurman, oh and Lofton. Yeah that's wrong.

Dallas, Wash and NYG def. have more.

Haha I never said it was accurate, just said I heard it (on a message board, no less).. And they're only counting Dallas, Washington, NYG players who were on those teams who beat the Bills in the Super Bowls. Not saying the Bills had more than all those teams combined, period. Not sure if I explained that correctly.

To me to be hall of fame worthy you should have been one of the top 3 at your position at one time or another. Ward never was. He was always about the 8th - 15th best guy in the league. If you compare his number to his true peers, Moss, TO, Harrison, Bruce, Holt... ward is behind them all. Chad Ochocinco even put up better numbers than him for a 5 yr period just didn't have the longevity.
Hines best year ... 112 catches, 1329 yds and 12 tds. Only year over 100 catches and only year over 1200 yds and his career high in TD's..

If you're only looking at numbers, then yes, that is true. Luckily for Hines Ward, the voters are, for the most part, a lot smarter than that.

  • 15 minutes into the HOF comittee's Ward debate, someone will mention that for the 1st half of his career, he played for Bill Cowher and the run first Pittsburgh Steelers with a guy named Kordell Stewart and another guy named Tommy Maddux.

Ward is a unique player who changed the rules of the game. He was the best ever (at least of his generation) at one aspect of the game. Add the SB MVP and the two rings, and that is a lot of "intangibles".

The longjam at WR might make it tough for him, but I'd expect Ward to get in eventually.

How exactly did he "change the rules of the game"?

Now, if WRs block defensive players too hard, they get a penalty. That rule is because of Hines Ward.

lol Nice, so it's technically correct that he caused A rule to come into effect...one that prevents what he used to do. And that's going to get him into the Hall of Fame?

No offense, but when I hear about a player "changing the rules of the game," I think about someone that changes the entire game. Like an offensive player that is used in ways that causes defenses to adjust. Not one that makes the NFL create a rule that really only applies to one person.

  • Write it down, this guy will be in the HOF.

    PSU2001

  • One of the more classier guys to ever play the game. His retirement presser today was as classy as it could've been. You can tell he didn't really want to retire but at the same time, didn't want to play for any other team other than the Steelers. Good luck to Hines in the future. I can see him being an analyst or something.

  • I'm a huge Steelers fan, but I don't feel that Ward is a HOF'er. He was always above average, but you didn't have to gameplan for him. His stats merit discussion, but there are 5-8 wr's that should be in before him. JMO.

He won't make the HOF - you're letting your fandom get in the way of reality.

There are far better WRs with far better numbers that didn't make the HOF. But he was a heckuva dirty WR

He wasn't dirty. He was a nice guy who hit. Just playing football the way it should be played.

    PSUgo15

  • Loved him cus he blocked like a man. Most WRs are too chicken ...well you know.

Not a HOFer though. Def not. Never was arguably the best WR in the league.

That's funny, because NFL players were polled last year and they named Ward the dirtiest player in the league. I think I'll defer to the players on this one.

He is a hof no bout about it. He was a leader and he was a game changer in every sense of the word. He played every down and what some called dirty was a guy who never took a play off and loved to hit. He is an hof

Sorry, having moxie doesn't make you a HOFer.

There are plenty of guys who play hard and like to hit, but they're not in the HOF.

Also, Hines Ward was NOT a game changer. He was extremely reliable, but he was never a game changer. He didn't mind blocking, and he was a gamer.

He was never the best WR in the league. He was certainly damn good for a long time, but never the best. JMO.

  • Wow bunch of homers here.

Ward was never first team all pro aka was never the best at his position. Tell me the last wr in the hall who was never first team all pro.

You tell me which WRs with a 1,000 catches aren't in Canton.

Jerry Rice is the only one in the HOF. If Ward gets in and it is a big if he will have to get to the back of a very long line.
