OT: Hines Ward Retires

  • His PC is on right now on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh.

Hines was a great football player despite what people say. He did it all and smiled doing it too. He was one of the best blockers to ever play the WR position and has HOF numbers.

I think he could make a great coach someday. I would take him as a WR coach if we did not have Hixon.

You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game, life or football-the margin for error is so small. -Pacino

I'd rather not teach our WRs to throw helmet-to-helmet hits all game long.

  • His numbers aren't HOF when better players at the same position still haven't gotten in.

One of the few steelers I like but not a Hall of Famer.

Yep. One of the best all-around WRs. Even though some defenders didn't like it because he actually hit back (rather than just letting the D take shots at him), he played the postion the way it should be played.

Maybe not a first ballot, but absolutely 100% HOF material.

As a Steeler fan, he will be very missed.

  • I loved his personality and attitude the most. Just seemed like a little kid out there playing.

He needed to go out with a bang to be HOF material. The last 2 seasons were forgetful...

He won't make the HOF - you're letting your fandom get in the way of reality.

There are far better WRs with far better numbers that didn't make the HOF. But he was a heckuva dirty WR

Ok, Ok, Andre Reed isn't in th HOF yet, we get it biggrin. (he deserves to be in! 100%)

Hines absolutely has a shot at the HOF. His numbers are very good. 1,000 catches deserves the HOF no matter what team you cheer for or who throws you the ball.

He also has a reputation that will stick around for years to come and will give him a lot of name recognition in the future.

He also has two rings and a Super Bowl MVP as well those things are also important in HOF consideration.

We will see. If the result wasn't 5+ years off, I would offer a big bet.

Out of curiosity, who are these "far better WRs" that aren't in the HOF?

Andre Reed, Chris Carter.... Rod Smith probably isn't as good as Ward. As an NFL fan i think he makes it in eventually, as a Steeler fan Reed and Carter need their due and Ward was not a good as those two.

  • He was the most physical WR in the game. Defenses hated him because he was so tough. I am not a stat guy and never will be, but when it comes to being physical he was the best in his time. If you have a rule named for you you are a bad ass, and Hines will always be a bad ass!! Thanks for the memories Hines!!

...and if you're not down with that, then I got 2 words for ya.."suck it!!"

    paupacklion

  • Tim Brown as well. To me Ward is a lot like Henry Ellard, who also has better numbers. Solid guy and put up some great numbers, but when you think of an elite receiver for a sizable period of time he was never that guy.

  • He made TONS of money and came out of the game with his health. win - win!!
He could maybe make a million a year being a Sunday "talking head" if he wants to continue to make $ from the sport.

Definitely agree on Chris Carter. Surprised he's not in, but I'm confident he will be. Kinda surprised that Andre Reed isn't in there, but also I wouldn't say he's better than Hines Ward, let alone "far better."

Cris Carter and Tim Brown are two off the top of my head. Ward's numbers are comparable to a few others...Fryar, Rison, Jimmy Smith.

Cheap shot artist who was a good possession WR. Good player but has no business in the HOF to anyone but Stiller fans.

If you have a rule named for you you are a bad ass,

The rule was named after him because of the egregiously dirty cheap shot hit he put on Keith Rivers (of the Bengals) that broke Rivers' jaw. It was a blind-side, defenseless player hit. Sorry but taking cheap shots and trying to end careers is not bad ass in my book.

Ward is one of the worst (and most penalized and fined) taunters in the NFL. He was voted the dirtiest player in the NFL last year by a poll of NFL players. Right there is all you need to know about his character.

Yet someone downvoted me for saying it.

Thanks everyone that backed up my statement with all those aforementioned WRs.

  • Funny, because the hit on Keith Rivers was not dirty or cheap. It was a legal block at the time to Rivers' shoulder. They changed the rule because it could lead to injuries, but I'm sorry, it's a physical game.

Am I to assume you don't cheer loudly when someone gets a great block on a punt return almost exactly like this one?

Had Ward played on any of your teams', you would've loved him.

BUT he could run across the middle and get blind-sided by a safety, and thats ok.

That hit on Rivers was completely legal, and it just so happened he broke his jaw. Tis football.

I think it's hillarious (and a bit hypocritical) that a WR, someone who's job it is to 100% focuse on a football coming at him while defenders could be launching themselves at him from any direction, hits someone (a big bad tough LB in fact) from the front/side (i.e nowhere near the back/blind side), and because the LB was focused on someone running with the ball, the hit is considered a "cheap shot" by a bunch of pu$$ies out there.

Those who are fans of teams other than the Steelers hate Hines Ward because actually hits your defenders back.

    Wha wha wha....

No. That is not what was (is) hysterical.

    BoulderFish

  • I dont think he belongs in the HOF, but you cant take away the fact that he played the game with everything he had. He blocked, and he blocked good, as a WR. Because he took out a few "defenseless defenders" (i know right), doesn't mean he's a dirty player.
