OT: Game of Thrones

What happens when they catch up to the books? Martin takes longer/extends the series with every book. A Dance with Dragons was mostly written in what was supposed to be one book to encompass A Dance with Dragons and A Feast for Crows. It still took him 6 years! I have a nasty feeling that this series will be finished by someone else.

For those considering reading, I read all 5 books and I'm obviously all in and am going to finish. But I thought A Game of Thrones was the best by far. If you want to keep going, be prepared to read with wikipedia available as the cast of characters grows to a size impossible to remember unless you are putting down a couple hours of text a night. Be prepared to ready 1000s of pages about these other characters when all you really want is to find out how things turn out for the few you actually care about. With what I know now, I think I'd stick to the HBO series.

I'm not sure which book I would consider my favorite... the most recent release, A Dance with Dragons, probably was my least favorite due to all of the setup and lack of action we had previously been spoiled with in the previous novels. Are there characters I am not really vested in? Absolutely, but I would be disappointed if the next novel was under 1000 pages. Although, I do hope the pace of introducing new characters does slow down.

I understand what you are getting at wrt Martin and his history of taking forever to complete the novels. I think his health is often a concern with the fanbase as well -- especially now that the series may go eight volumes instead of the planned seven.

I disagree - I started reading the series when the promos for the first HBO season started running, and finished with the last book just after it came out. Like Appoo said, it can be tedious at times with all the detail, but there's so much in the books you just don't get from the series - Martin delves deeply into each character, the relationships between various people and families, and the lore of the Seven Kingdoms. It's a very very rich, complex environment, which is what made it so engaging for me. TV just can't do that justice. Arya Stark and Jon Snow are tremendous characters, literally make you want to skip the other chapters to get back to their stories. Last thing I'll say - nothing you see now stays the same. EVERYTHING in this series changes, multiple times over. It can be maddening at times, but also keeps you coming back for more. The last chapter of the last book literally made me gasp out loud on a plane. The woman next to me thought I was crazy.

By the way Appoo, great summaries above - glad you took care fo that before I came along or I would have felt obliged ;-)

I refuse to believe that last chapter happened as the readers are all led to believe it did. I'm still holding out hope. pray

I don't believe it did. Without a spolier, I believe that character "went to the dogs" if you catch my drift. and will eventually "snap out of it" in some way. If not, I may set the book down and never finish it.

A bit of backstory to the Groyjoys: After Robert won the throne from the Targareyns, and settled in a bit, Balon Greyjoy named himself a King. King of the Isles. Robert didn't like that very much, and he Ned Stark went to war with the Greyjoys who ruled the Iron Islands. In the process of that war, Theon's older brothers were killed, and Balon ultimately lost with only his Son, Theon, and daughter Asha surviving as his children. To ensure good behavior, Ned took the child Theon with him to winterfell as a hostage, and a foster child (fostering children with different lords was a common practice in their world). Ned raised Theon as one of his own children, and what we saw there was Theon coming home for the first time in 10 years or so, to deliver an offer from Robb Stark to join forces to wage war against the Lannisters - specifically to make use of Greyjoy's fleet. Balon has different ideas, and as we saw was very contemptuous of Robb and the Starks in general.

  • Nice summary. It should also be pointed out that Asha (Theon's sister) was renamed Yara by the show's writers to avoid confusion with Osha (the Wildling currently in Winterfell).

Oh, and the scene where Theon doesn't realize Yara/Asha is his sister when he begins his "flirting" was pretty much spot on from the book. I thought the look on Theon's face was priceless (and well done).

  • I just watched the first season in two days before the first episode of this second season came out (never had hbo before I moved to scottsdale). Got hooked quick haha. I've been okay with the first two episodes being slow and about building back story, it makes the show that much better. What is the name of the pirate they just introduced? He seems like an awesome character.

salladhor saan, who is pretty cool.

I'm disappointed in how they casted Asha/Yara, one of the carachetrs I was really looking forward to see come to life. I expected her to be a lot more sexy, wickedly funny, and witty. I think 13 from House would have been an excellent choice for Asha. They kind of found her opposite.

Asha/Yara may still grow into that role... I'm hopeful, although I did imagine her when reading the books as raven-haired. For the most part though, I think the casting has been spot on (Peter Dinkledge being by far the best) -- especially the core group save Cersei. Lena Headley is just too old and worn out for the character I had imagined. She does play an excellent role as a strong, ruthless woman with deep trust issues.

Different pirate. Salladhor San was very much implied to be "ethnic", from the tropical lands. Re Melisandre, I don't recall that scene being in the book, was it? It was certainly implied that she and Stannis had something going on, but never explicitly stated or described. Her face isn't particularly special, but the body was smokin...

I actually don't mind the Cersei one...she IS old, but she thinks of herself as a younger woman. With Asha, I was just aghast at the doughy body they gave her. When I first saw her I was like "WTF?"

A shrink would love to get his hands on Cersei though. I'm sensing major Daddy issues with that one.
