What happens when they catch up to the books? Martin takes longer/extends the series with every book. A Dance with Dragons was mostly written in what was supposed to be one book to encompass A Dance with Dragons and A Feast for Crows. It still took him 6 years! I have a nasty feeling that this series will be finished by someone else.
For those considering reading, I read all 5 books and I'm obviously all in and am going to finish. But I thought A Game of Thrones was the best by far. If you want to keep going, be prepared to read with wikipedia available as the cast of characters grows to a size impossible to remember unless you are putting down a couple hours of text a night. Be prepared to ready 1000s of pages about these other characters when all you really want is to find out how things turn out for the few you actually care about. With what I know now, I think I'd stick to the HBO series.

I disagree - I started reading the series when the promos for the first HBO season started running, and finished with the last book just after it came out. Like Appoo said, it can be tedious at times with all the detail, but there's so much in the books you just don't get from the series - Martin delves deeply into each character, the relationships between various people and families, and the lore of the Seven Kingdoms. It's a very very rich, complex environment, which is what made it so engaging for me. TV just can't do that justice. Arya Stark and Jon Snow are tremendous characters, literally make you want to skip the other chapters to get back to their stories. Last thing I'll say - nothing you see now stays the same. EVERYTHING in this series changes, multiple times over. It can be maddening at times, but also keeps you coming back for more. The last chapter of the last book literally made me gasp out loud on a plane. The woman next to me thought I was crazy.
By the way Appoo, great summaries above - glad you took care fo that before I came along or I would have felt obliged ;-)

I just watched the first season in two days before the first episode of this second season came out (never had hbo before I moved to scottsdale). Got hooked quick haha. I've been okay with the first two episodes being slow and about building back story, it makes the show that much better. What is the name of the pirate they just introduced? He seems like an awesome character.

salladhor saan, who is pretty cool.
I'm disappointed in how they casted Asha/Yara, one of the carachetrs I was really looking forward to see come to life. I expected her to be a lot more sexy, wickedly funny, and witty. I think 13 from House would have been an excellent choice for Asha. They kind of found her opposite.

Asha/Yara may still grow into that role... I'm hopeful, although I did imagine her when reading the books as raven-haired. For the most part though, I think the casting has been spot on (Peter Dinkledge being by far the best) -- especially the core group save Cersei. Lena Headley is just too old and worn out for the character I had imagined. She does play an excellent role as a strong, ruthless woman with deep trust issues.
