  • News Corp. announced that they'll be starting a new 24 hour cable sports network to rival ESPN...I'm assuming you're all as happy as I am that you won't have to watch ESPN for sports news anymore (although I'm sure it won't be on par with ESPN at first) after all they did to us as a fan base over the past year and a half or so.

  • Any idea on a timetable? I believe this may carry soccer games for soccer fans out there. Hope for the best NBC sports network hasn't impressed as of yet.

  • It seems unfortunate that many of these are too late to the party. ESPN seems to have a stranglehold on sports channels, and given what they charge cable companies to carry each ESPN channel, their money isn't going away any time soon.

This is just whimsical thinking based on what I wished would happen (but won't due to TV politics), but I would love to see someone big (e.g. Fox) release an entirely online channel that you can just pay for by itself. You know, take that first step towards getting rid of these terrible cable packages that force you to pay 60$ for a bunch of channels that you don't want. I'd much rather pay more per channel and get only the ones I want.

Of course, that dream will not happen because they get more money overall with the bundles, but still.

  • Losing Formula One to NBC Sports Network ultimately doomed Speed, which Fox Sports 1 replaces. Whether they fold Fox Soccer Channel with the loss of the Premier League, as well to NBC SN, should be interesting to follow.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

They have been likening it to no one thinking anyone could take on CNN in '96(i believe?) when fox news came out and now fox news gets more viewers and leads the ratings (not trying to turn this into a political post, just giving an example)...and fs1 going to be broadcasting some mlb and some playoff games i guess...they have some college football stuff already although not the big 10, but they are going to bid on their contract when it becomes available (which i guess is soon)...they have the men and womens world cups as well as nascar and some college bball i guess....no nfl games yet, but they intend too eventually....this is all i know, and i could have misunderstood some, but as i understand it it sounds pretty exciting to me

  • Looking at the link below, they already have a better lineup than NBC Sports. I believe the Catholic 7/Big East is signing a contract with them as well.

I'm not trying to start something on the board or in this thread, but I feel like I'm missing something here. 13, feel free to PM me and fill me in on your point of view here. Certainly there are many on this board who feel like ESPN as wronged PSU in some way. And clearly there are those who used to represent Penn State who made huge mistakes (and committed crimes). There is a lot of blame to go around.

They will be in 90 million homes immediately as well, meaning they will only be 9 million below the number of homes ESPN reaches as well...it doesn't guarantee success but it can't hurt

I was excited to start watching NBC Sports until I found out Erik Kuselias was the lead anchor, he can get very annoying

Remember when Fox sports net was supposed to rival espn back in the late 90's. Olberman and Matt Vasgersian. Who else was on there... Van Earl Wright and Andrew Siciliano. Chris Meyers. Good times. I actually liked Best Damn Sports Show. Way better then any garbage espn put out there. And this may sound odd but I loved FSN's national NFL pregame show with Jay Mohr, Deacon Jones and I forget who else was on there. I'm rooting for this network to succeed and if it does it's because they get good talent and original program and let the talent be the talent and no try to control them like a puppet like espn. Personalities sell. For me at the old FSN people like john sally were gold and what made them different from espn. I hope Fox Sports 1 tries to be completely different from espn and not an espn clone.

If I were in charge of starting a network... ( I like to think I'm smarter than I am)
    1. Overpay for football- I would sign up every college game I could get. In the fall I would have college games on every night of the week. (Spotlight game even if it's Sun Belt or WAC games). Don't even have to necessarily pay for big boy football. Espn killed it and broke in with weekday MAC games.
    2. No more debate shows. It's played.
    3. Make sportscenter a highlight show like ESPN news or old sportscenter. More like old sportscenter less like the Today show.
    4. NFL sells and ESPN beats it to death. I would focus Sundays more on recapping the college football slate but I doubt this will happen because fox is so in with the NFL.
    5. USFL is supposed to be coming back soon and play in the spring... sign them up. Spring football!!
    6. Put whatever live sports on you can even if ... god help me... it's soccer.

Kuselias called out Freeh and the NCAA for the joke they are and is in clear support of Joe/PSU football in this entire saga.
His commentary is the reason I paid more attention to NBC Sports actually.

I should know this but it's tough to keep up with all the sports outlets. Dan Patrick is on NBCSports. I know he has bad blood for some managers/executives at ESPN, but what was/is his stance of the Freeh report and us.

This. I am thrilled at how vehemently he has defended Joe at a time when no one else is on mainstream sports television. He made a fan in me in the past couple of months.

Not sure on DP. Haven't heard from him since the summer craze web his stance was "we'll if this isn't lack of institutional control, then what is?" Maybe Costas has swayed him since.
I do know that Kuselias and Costas have a lot of influence over there and they both seem to be in our corner (Kuselias moreso).

I started listening sometime around end of olympics when he got back from hosting at the olympics as I just couldnt take ESPN anymore, so I dont know what I he was like at the height of "it" and the sanctions, but he been relatively tough on Joe/PSU but not on the actual team though.

I think he has softened up significantly since when I started watching back around August, dont think he is really for punishing the current players/coaches for what happened. He made a bet with one of his USC friends before the year that PSU without Silas Redd will end up with a better record with USC with Silas Redd. As we know, he was right.

First, Fox is putting itself on the line with this and KNOWS it will take $$$$$$$ to compete with the snobs in Conn. Yet that is EXACTLY why they just might do it. I remember way back when Fox came on as a 4th TV network and most people laughed at 'em. Well, lookie lookie. When they took the NFL away from CBS people were stunned. It's all about $$. They KNOW that. They also know they can cherry-pick the best talent to get off the ground in a hurry and there again, $$$$ talks. Steal away the right people and you're off to the races Oh, and did I mention, the folks up in Conn. think they're the ONLY sports show in town. Good, let 'em keep thinkin' that. Competetion is what they need to ram a large rod up their rear ends, to put it politely.
