OT: Eagles met with Brian Kelly?

    Lol

    Oh my god

...wow. Please let the Eagles hire him. So, so, so awesome.

Yeah, and let the floodgates open like at USC! This is going to be an interesting off-season.

IF Kelly left, I wonder who ND would go after?

Who is another Irish Catholic from Boston that is currently a hot name on the circuit?

Be careful what you wish for sometimes fellas.

That would be intriguing, hasn't thought of that. In all seriousness I don't think BK leaves, yet. As far as coaches go I'd have James Franklin at the top of my list.

  • As far as BOB being a ND target should Kelly leave, if people didn't think NFL teams would pay the buyout, do you guys really think ND would pay $18 milliion? Having said that, I don't think he'd leave anyway.

  • I think this is really Kelly's way of getting his bump for making ND relevant again. He would be a fool to leave as his explosive personality will not sit well in the NFL just like Saban's did not. I don't see this as more than...pay me now.

BOB isn't going to be bouncing around the college football landscape to find a job. When he leaves PSU it will be for a NFL job and that's that.

You'd think that would be common sense, but it won't stop people from throwing it out there. Gotta stoke the fire, right?

Those buyouts are imaginary numbers that accomplish two things:
    1. Hedge against mass approaches from competitors
    2. Sets the starting point for negotiations if a competitor is seriously interested

They're far more common in European soccer where every player can be bought/sold and has a release clause price in his contract. Many of these figures are absolutely astronomical (Messi's is 250mil Euro for example) which are never actually paid, but it sets the bar for negotiations if someone is serious about a buyout.

9 times out of 10...if the player/coach wants to leave, a negotiation is reached at a far lower figure than the buyout. On a few occasions, the asset holder demands the full buyout which ruins negotiations and they are left with a furious asset. That's why they typically agree to a lower fee to avoid the friction.

If the buyout were an insurmountable figure, why would NFL teams even bother interviewing him? Because they know that if BOB truly wanted to leave, PSU would negotiate down the price (especially our current leadership team).

It's highly unlikely that Kelly would leave, so it doesn't matter. But if he did, I think that there would be mutual interest btwn ND and BOB...and the buyout wouldn't be the mitigating factor in a potential switch.

i disagree about mutual interest, maybe BOB would be intrigued but man - if he would have an interview or entertain going to ND after saying he is remaining at PSU......that would be on the level of Lane Kiffin.

No it wouldn't. I know everyone is BOB'ed up right now, but looking at things realistically...if offered a $1 mil/yr raise to take over ND, who is coming off a NC appearance, vs staying here for 5 more years of sanctions...I wouldn't call him a traitor for going.

After all, this guy didn't exactly 'win' this power play that he supposedly hoarded over our Administration. He was at that PC spewing the company line just like he was supposed to do. So why was he interviewing w NFL teams then? It didn't appear to accomplish much. His words don't mean a lot to me.

I think he's auditioning for future employers. We are a resume padder, and he's doing a fine job of using it properly. It's the way that the coaching game is played now, and I have no beef with it. I'm not expecting him to be here for very long, and if the right college or NFL job came along, I wouldn't be surprised if he left before lunch time. We were a 'big enough' program in a 'desperate enough' situation to consider a first timer like him. He jumped on it and is riding the wave. Good for BOB...good luck elsewhere in the near future.

i agree with some of what you say, but to leave the program this year, with transfer rule...I wouldn't exactly say Good for BOB.

Agree to disagree man....but i don't care how you spin it or justify it - that would be beyond cold to do that.

BOB already stated that he was our coach in 2013. He's not going to go back on that commitment. He was on the market until he decided to end it. Next year, he will be on the market again, but not before the 2013 season is over.

The one thing that may throw a kink in that is BOB's own words. His glowing talk of the NFL won't go unnoticed and if you just lost a coach to the NFL, would you really jump on a guy who just interviewed there and talked openly about how it's the top of the food chain. While BOB is popular right now, he may have screwed himself over IMO with his honesty when it comes to the NFL. Just my 2 cents. I also don't see Kelly bailing for the NFL.

  • Again, I don't think BOB would leave, but I also think ND would go after a higher profile coach.

He wasn't on the market for positions which hadnt potentially opened yet.

They'd probably go after Bob Stoops first.

That's not the point. The point is that he has now firmly stated that he will be our coach in 2013. One thing that everyone who has worked with BOB has said is that he is very loyal. He has been upfront about everything since his hire. Now that he has given a firm commitment, he's not going to back out of it.

If Tdiddy feels our coach would do this, i don't know how he could even support BOB.....I understand how the "game" works, but sometimes things can go too far.
