OT: Blue Band Scraps Glitter’s “Rock and Roll”

  • I looked and didn't see another topic about this so I thought I would share this. What is everyone's thought on it?

Blue Band Scraps Glitter’s “Rock and Roll” - Onward State

If you’ve attended a basketball game since student's returned from winter break, you may have noticed something a little different coming from the pep band. The crowd favorite “Rock and Roll, Part Two” is gone, and gone for good according to the director of the Blue Band, Dr. Richard Bundy.

  • I'm down with this. Personally, I think the entire pre-game music selection needs re-worked. Hopefully that changes this year too. Some of the same songs have been playing since I was a freshman in 2005. It's getting a bit bland at this point. Play some more current, hip hop, "pump up" songs.

  • Should've been scrapped years ago, because it's LAME.

  • They actually ditched it before the break, right after everything came to light. Other schools continue to play it, does that mean they are insensitive to the children? Maybe someone ought to contact the four-letter spin network.

And as much as I liked how the music helped get the crowd jacked, they'll come up with something else I'm sure.

    I completely disagree.

    1. Rock and Roll was by far the best pump up song we had when you hear P...S....U echoing around the stadium.

    2. Ya I wanna hear more Ke$ha and LMFAO, nothing screams gladiator match like a bunch of squealing pop music. Less current, past, and future. More staples like fight songs. The blue band doesn't get enough time as it is with Guido piping in music over them, most people don't even know the words to the fight songs as it is.

Pre-game show is for Guido. Of course I don't want to hear lame a$$ hip hop songs because there are quite a few solid ones that could be played, more so than the same crap that's been blasting through the stadium for the last half dozen years.

Blue Band takes over the vast majority of the music during the game. That's how I think it should be.

  • They could play the Pennsylvania Polka for all I care if it gets rid of the microphone guy.

I am not ready to "Rock And Roll"....I disliked him more than Jay Paterno. In fact my new handle should be FireGudio or FireMicroponeGuy

  • While we're on that topic, I spoke with a blue band member in 2009 at the Michigan game in Ann Arbor (35-10 PSU victory) and he said that they could no longer play "skin I'm in" at the football games due to an issue with the original song's copyright or something of that nature..
I really loved it and wish they could or would still play it during fball games.. If you want to know the song I'm talking about.. it can be heard here.

  • Rock and Roll Part II was a great stadium cheer, but recently it seemed a bit 1990'ish and outdated. But "We Will Rock You" is equally outdated. Plus, I can't stand Queen.

They should just scrap the "hey" song and play traditional Blue Band songs during the pregame (the fight song, the victory song, the "let's go state" song, etc.).

  • "We will rock you" is SOOOOO terrible during pregame.
No one gets fired up and it's just a lame, boring drag before the team comes out.
I've only been attending games for 3 years (student) and the best pregame sequence was in 2009.
Right at the end of "Let's go P-S-U" the lion would roar and the team would come storming onto the field.
I don't know why they changed it but the addition of "we will rock you" is just forced and downright terrible.

Year after year, they continue to find a terribly annoying cheerleader to be the mic guy. I think they must look for that in the auditions!

Agreed 100%. Hearing the "P.....S.....U" coming out of the stadium is something special. The problem is the on field product hasn't matched up to expectations so the cheer probably has lost some of it's feel. I was there in late 90s, when we were pretty good......and that cheer gave me chills every time and had an intimidation factor. Now...with the on field production we've had lately, not so much.

I remember being a kid thinking that you could hear that chant all around the mountains it was so loud. We don't have nearly as intimidating of a pre game song as this. I'm really not in favor, although from the sounds of things the B.O.T. is gonna have some big overhauls soon...

  • I can't hear that song without thinking of the Jock Jams CDs from the 90's. Damn you Glitter!

PREACH FTG! Haha. But seriously I used to get chills when they played this song, and I'm seriously pissed they did away with it.

Absolutely agree, loved this song especially when we were driving. Thats a bummer about the copyright issue. Thanks for the link too.
