OT: Bama QB Phillip Sims to transfer....

  • UVA is considered the leader. He will petition the NCAA to play immediately citing family cirmcumstances. That game will be very interesting when they come to Happy Valley.

  • yikes. He would be the starter from day 1. That game may get 10x more difficult.

what makes you say that? Because he was once a 5-star that went to 'Bama?

Probably because he just about won the starting job at Bama as a soph.

Why? I imagine he's transferring because he isn't good enough to play at Alabama and Saban's convinced him to leave. Maybe he'll live up to his HS ranking, or maybe he's another Bolden.

but was beat out by an average game manager that was in a position that he couldn't fail.

    lol

a mediocre game manager who won a national championship, and just so happened to win the offensive MVP in that game.

...yep and was literally placed in a position that he could not fail...just a serviceable QB that for any other team would be completely average. Agree or disagree?

    PSU12

  • disagree.

  • Not worried. McCarron isn't anything special and if you put him on Virginia's team, no one would care. Sims got beat out by McCarron, so why would he suddenly make VA a whole lot better?

AJ McCarron (or however you spell it) isn't exactly average. He accomplished what Saban asked him to do more effectively than SIms. Saban asks his QBs to be game managers, not to try and make plays.

Sims has a TON of natural ability, just like McCarron does, and is an automatic upgrade over whatever they have at Virginia right now.

EDIT: Just because he doesn't play in an offense where he puts up gaudy stats doesn't mean he's not a great QB.

‏@Cordale10 Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS

  • I don't think he is granted ability to play immediately. Would be a bad precedent to set.

    LBU59

  • I don't either, but it would make UVa a lot better in a season.

as I said before...McCaron on any team not named 'Bama or LSU is a completely average quarterback that is just serviceable. If Sims can't beat him out, then I'm sorry that I'm not afraid of his natural abilities. I have no clue what UVA's QB situation is and you could be right that he would start from day 1 there. IMO transfers can help individual teams at certain positions for sure but are not program changers (Wisky was at a different dynamic than UVA is and had the team around Wilson that IMO UVA doesn't have). UVA getting Sims wouldn't change my thoughts at all on the upcoming series with them.

He won't play in the upcoming game because they won't grant him his petition.

McCaron on any team not named 'Bama or LSU is relied on a lot more to make plays than he would be otherwise. Both are power running teams who rely on time of possession and clock control to win ball games. He does exactly what is asked of him by Saban, which is to not turn it over or make many mistakes. Don't punish him for playing in a conservative offense. He was a top 10 QB coming out of HS, which doesn't mean much, but was seen as a project with high upside because of a lot of natural talent.

Sims was seen as the one with more natural ability, but struggled with trying to do too much. He should benefit from an offense that airs it out a bit more. UVa would fit the offense around him, because I don't know what else they have offensively that is on his level. Sims isn't a great QB, but he's a good one with lots of potential.

  • I think McCaron is a player. He can make all the throws. Just because he is asked to manage the game, like every Saban QB, does not make him an average QB. He makes the throws he needs to make, consistently. If asked to do more, I think he could hold his own pretty well.

This. Sims would probably be better in a more aggressive system than McCarron. Bama wins games on the ground and just asks their QB's to not throw INT's. McCarron is better...at what Saban asks him to do. Not necessarily better in terms of what other coaches might ask him to do.
