OSU vs PSU thread...CIVIL VERSION

So 95% game will be interesting to watch from a matchup standpoint? Genius analysis. I'll tell you what, our punt unit versus your punt return unit will also be an interesting matchup.

I'm really interested to see fgs, kickoffs, the coin toss and halftime interviews as well. Bob vs. Urb with a sideline reporter is a matchup to watch.

What people don't understand is that we have a ball control offense. The important stat to look at in regards to our offense is the # of plays we run. The last two games we have run in the 90's which is pretty damn good. Considering that we aren't always in hurry-up like an Oregon also says something.

You can show me yardage stats all you want, but I'm telling you guys (OSU fans) that this will be the most complex offense you will face all year. There is no one to key on, just a lot of contributors used in a variety of ways. TE's get flexed, come in tight, go in the backfield... RBs line up all over the backfield, line up wide, line up in the slot... 2 TE sets with both spread wide.... Jumbo to 5 wide... a week isn't going to be enough time to plan, and there is a ton that BOB hasn't even shown yet. I've never had this much fun watching PSU play on offense... even back in 2008 or in 1994. It's a blast.

1994 was special. That was a 100-year performance by arguably the best O in College histroy. No school has had 3 from an offense picked in the first 8 NFL draft picks! Both Kyle Brady and Kerry Collins had long successful careers in the NFL. And although Ki-Jana Carter had an injury-filled NFL career he was one of the most talented backs in PSU history. 1994 was my second season as a Season-ticket holder at PSU. And I remember telling everyone this was a once in a lifetime Offense.

I agree BO'Bs O is exciting to watch. And once he establishes himself and recruits some talent that can be taught to excecute his schemes, we will have alot of exciting offenses to watch in the future.

    Perfect post.

Many of them are only thinking their offense versus our defense, but forget our offense versus their defense. This offense is far more complex to defend than any one on their slate to date, including the pedestrian offense of Sparty that they keep comparing this offense to.

A lot of them also seem to assume "we've done well against other pro style O's, so we'll do well in defending this one."

Frankly...who did MSU have at QB, TE, and WR that compares to PSU? Especially when they played OSU. Burbridge is talented, but IIRC he didn't play against OSU.

Andrew Maxwell is ok, nothing special. He was terrible that day.

Against OSU, it was obvious that Sparty wanted to get the ball in Bell's hands, both running and catching. Bell had a team high eight catches and a team high in yards receiving. Dion Sims, who I feel would be the best TE in the league (if used properly) was negated. Sims has been a non factor most of the year.

MSU doesn't have a Robinson. Burbridge could be down the road though. He didn't play versus OSU either.

So, Sparty's offense is basically bell with a sprinkle of Burbridge. That is it. Different story with PSU.

The dismantling of Iowa isn't a huge accomplishment. They truly suck out loud. However, going to HV and winning is never easy, although I don't think you will have an answer to our offense. Your D vs. our O will be interesting to watch. And, our D vs. your O will be an interesting matchup as well.

I kind of like our TE's against your LBs big mismatch. I also like our front seven against your O. The PSU D is going to be a more disciplined and much more fundamentally sound defense that OSU is going to face this year. I know your fan base has annointed Sparty the best, but their record tells a different story. This is going to be a good matchup and miller is going to have to beat us with his arm versus his legs. I think PSU has the edge here also. This is going to be a battle and barring any ST disasters PSU should win this close. The only way I see us losing is with a big mistake ST. This PSU team is going to wear the OSU D down, I see absolutely no discipline on this side of the ball.

  • I cant predict what will happen because I dont know what team will show up. Some weeks the offense doesnt show up, like yesterday. Most weeks the defense doesnt show up, though they played well yesterday. Our team is beat up with injuries. We do seem to get up for big games, but either way it will be a battle. Were hoping Braxton will be ready.

As a Penn State fan, I'm very happy with that line. Doesn't seem like Vegas is too confident that Ohio State can win this football game.

Looks like you're also a fellow Phil's fan from your sig pics. Missing Harry Kalas too. The announcer with the golden pipes. I grew up listening to him and By Saam broadcasting Phils games on the radio.

Back On Topic: I am a little surprised that OSU is only a 3pt. favorite. But it is a road game for the Buckeyes and home team automatically gets a free 3 pts. for just being the host.

I live for the big games at Beaver Stadium and this one should match the hype. Looking forward to 110K fans in the seats for this one!

  • If you buy in to Sagarin's rankings as a form of handicapping the game should be pick em.

    PSU 79.84 +3 (Home)=83
    OSU 82.83 =83

+3 is a betting advantage for PSU investors

? Each book I have looked at is PSU as the favorite by -1 to -2.5. Has the opening line been pounded that bad or did you misread your bookie?

According to VegasInsider, PSU opened up as a 3 point dog in Vegas. I'm assuming people jumped all over PSU at that number if the line has already shifted to PSU being a point or two favorite in the span of hours.

If PSU plays next week like they are playing tonight they will be very, very difficult to beat especially at home. BOB is doing a great job this year and has to be an early candidate for COY. Obviously our defense is of major concern and we have a terrible time containing spread teams. While PSU is not a spread team they do a great job in the passing game with their tight ends. I think the game may hinge on whether Miller is 100% and plays a great football game and if our defense can get to McGloin a few times. We haven't had a sack in the last 2 games which is just one of our many weaknesses on defense. Miller is special when he's running with the ball not so much throwing it. He has to have probably his best game throwing the ball this year and we have to have our best game defensively in order to get the win. PSU is really playing well and I'm very impressed with BOB, his staff and your senior leadership.

BOB, as you guys call him is doing one of the best jobs in the country. However, he's doing so well considering the circumstances are you guys afraid he may leave for greener pastures. Another big time college coaching job, or maybe back to the NFL?

    In one year? No.

In the future, depends on if this pace is kept up. Which we obviously have no idea if he will.

If BOB has a good showing next year Im really hoping some big donors pony up to keep him around. I also think it would have to be a large market NFL team for him to be interested.

BO'Bs contract had a clause that extended the original 4-yr commit to an 8-yr contract if PSU were to be sanctioned by the NCAA. I highly doubt that this "clause" was instigated by PSU but rather BO'B.

In the Dave Jones article ( I saw it in the twitter thread) it says a buyout is only for the initial years on his contract, which makes it a lot more palatable for a team to buy his contract out.

Not saying BOB and his agent didn't work the extra years in, but they also more than likely put in the stipulation about the buyout.

There's a Giger article linked somewhere in another thread stating if BOB leaves before 5 years, he's on the hook for $2.3 million for the remaining time through the original 5-year contract not the full nine years of his amended contract. Don't see another college willing to pay that. NFL teams would be another story but I don't think he leaves until after the sanctions are over. I have a feeling loyalty is one of his stronger traits.

I still think that even under the stress of the Emmert Sanctions that PSU is a DESITINATION college FB coaching job. BOB may have pro aspirations, but I'm hoping he stays here for the long-term.

Like others said, the buyout might make it not extremely appealing for many college teams and NFL teams might want some more evidence. If he wins enough to make the amount a nonissue, I could see the shortest OB lasting at PSU is three years (for an NFL/college team to be wowed enough to buy him out). If he last that long, it lines up similar to the OSU situation (albiet still more difficult). We MIGHT be able to get a successful HC to come in replace him with the sanctions coming to an end and I think OB will keep the cupboard from being empty (although not fully stocked) due to his recruiting abilities.

However, I side with others, I see loyalty being an OB strong suit and he will stay thru the sanctions.

I also think his family situation making him less likely to want to disrupt the family. JMO, if I was in his shoes, I would want stability for my son (stability is one of the best thing you can provide a child with a developmental disorder) and PSU offers that, right now. He has a long-leash that he wouldn't have at many schools/NFL teams.

IF OB does leave, the one thing is that the next HC is getting handed one of the best S&C guys in college football. I would find it hard to believe that Fitz would leave PSU for anything other than a crazy amount of money and I assume we would match in a heartbeat though.
