  • I think much of the problem is unreal expectations. Names like Peterson, Richt, and Saban were thrown around for this job. Realistically what big named coach would have stepped into this; 1) being the man to replace JoePa 2) everything that is going to go along with this Sandusky mess.I think the Admins. were not open about how tough this search truely was. I admit that PSU should be a destination coaching position just not with the current situation. Accept O'Brian for a few years, let the dust settle on all the other stuff. then if O'Brian hasn't worked out get the big named guy then.

  • Question: Has O'Brien ever stepped foot on Penn State's campus? Has he even seen the football facilities?

    lion95

  • Very good question

  • If the criteria was young, experienced coach with no ties to PSU, Mullen and Cristobal would've been much better hires.

  • On the bright side, at least everyone's favorite game day chant remains relatively intact:

  • IDK if I want the Pats to loose or win now. If this news is true part of me wants BOB to be here ASAP but I think his status and the way recruits and fans view him would change significantly if he wins the super bowl.

I'm a diehard steelers fan and all my emotions are torn. I hate this hire but I'll give it a chance.

I've upvoted you like 10 times today. I completely agree with your post, again. You sound like a true Penn State fan who loves his university and not some clown who would rather see us turn into a SEC program just so we go to more BCS bowl games.

Thanks, Lambeau. Some guys on here need to relax. I think I need a break from reading all the venom on here.

Amen because you blind loyalty to coah O Joyner Fed up is pathetic. PSU deserves better then this coach and how prick joyner and ira did the search. Lettermen are turning there back on the program now.

This issue with me is that BOB has publicly said he would rather coach in the NFL, and there was even a quote in the Boston Herald by his agent that says something to the effect that this would not preclude him from talking to NFL teams (it was a weird quote, but that was my interpretation).

All I want is someone who really wants to be here. Even if we could not get the Plan A guy, Roman would have been the perfect Plan B - great offensive mind plus he publicly said PSU would be his dream job. Golden, Bradley - guys that bleed blue and white. It's not necessarily about the big name - it's about the intentions.

  • You call it blind loyalty, I call it supporting my alma mater and choosing to believe these two successful guys did all they could to hire the best guy willing to take this job. If they were confident about Plan A that could explain why it took this long.

Okay: I'm taking a break from the b1tch-fest now. See yous later.

    yalikeMoxie

  • It is a failure only because it took this long....let's just hope he can put together a great staff that includes the LJ Sr and Vandy in some way.

    PvillePA_Lion

  • Wonder what he's getting paid? If it's anything more than 1.5 million I will be pissed. I say this because I think Joyner thinks this is a big time hire but it isn't so he better not have paid him like one.

  • I think what we're seeing is a culmination of 60 days worth of frustration. Frustration about the way the search was handled, the mis-information presented by "insiders", and the reported arrogance of the search committee. Couple all of that with the anger most of us felt from the Sandusky deal, and you have the perfect storm for people to be pizzed off.

I certainly don't agree with the O'Brien hire and, if it does turn out to be true, I'm inclined to agree with diddy. The BOT is a knee-jerk crew and they don't want another coach to have the "power" that Joe had. In their mind, O'Brien is the perfect guy to come in and wade out the storm.

I'm interested to see who he brings in for his staff. If he kept the defensive crew and brings in some other offensive minds, it may not be that bad. On the other hand, if he really isn't starting until February, that's simply unacceptable.

I'm also interested in seeing how donations will be affected by this hire - I anticipate a lot of calls from the NLC in the coming months.

  • While I, like the rest of us, hope that he can prove us wrong. I moreso just feel betrayed by the leadership of the school, in the making of this decision. They clearly did NOT care what we all thought, and went about their business. Perhaps we are all arrogant in believing that our name is stronger than this scandal in public perception? No matter what everyone else thinks, we all know that to be true. We are Penn State...and we will be back, and it will be all the sweeter when we make our truimphant return to the upper echelons of college football. Will it be soon? Who knows. But I am of the feeling that it is inevitable. We STILL ARE...and always will be.

I'm certainly not giving money this year. I will reevaluate that decision next year.

I'm certainly not giving money this year. I will reevaluate that decision next year.

Count me in this boat. My family held off on paying our NLC dues and renewing our season tickets. This outcome made my decision really easy yesterday. I feel badly for the other student-athletes this will impact, but in the end if the administration doesn't care about how these decisions affect the kids, alums, and donors, then I'm not going to care either. This is an absolute disaster in every sense of the word.

I'm looking forward to those NLC calls in the coming months. Then they'll get to hear the words directly coming out of my mouth rather than just browsing and deleting my emails. I'm so disappointed that coming on the tails of the Sandusky situation that the gravity of this hire wasn't properly weighed by the President, BOT, and Athletic Director. The ramifications of this debacle will be felt in Happy Valley for years and years to come, and I'm not just talking about intercollegiate athletics. This will impact research dollars and donations. This will impact the numbers and quality of students applying to the university. This is far-reaching and the decision makers at my alma mater clearly didn't understand that. So if that's the case, I'm certainly not going to enable that to continue with my continued economic support. I'll find other causes worthy of my donations.

  • Is it possible that BOB is really the only one that would take the job outside of the current staff? I can understand wanting to make a clean sweep of the previous staff, what I don't understand is the timing of everything. If BOB isn't working until after the Super Bowl this years recruiting will already suffer. Then next years team will suffer because they will have to hire his staff after he comes on board possibly in FEB. This whole thing is crazy! I can understand the anger and outrage, just be sure of one thing "Tomoorow will be another day and YOU ARE PENN STATE"
