And if he leaves what exactly is Penn State supposed to do? What coach would come here who would be anything close to O'Brien given the current sanctions? What other coach could hold on to a top 30 recruiting class? Penn State isn't in a position to be picky right now. They'd better do what they have to in order to keep BOB, because we won't be seeing anything close to 8-4 for another decade if we lose him. If his assistants start getting poached there's a good chance he's gone so we'd better make sure that doesn't happen, at least until the bowl ban ends.

My heart is with this, but my head is asking How?
BOB already makes more than his predecessor and I suspect that Vandy & LJ got a boost in salary last year when they were named Co-DCs by Scrap.
I also suspect that the entire staff is better compensated now than the previous staff was in 2011.
The Ath. Dept. has had to take out a loan from the greater Univ. to pay off the NCAA fine.
NCAA fine costs $12 milliong per year over the next 5 years.
B1G lost Bowl revenue cost us another $3.25 million over the next 4 years.
STEP resulted in a $7 million increase in revenue in 2011. However attendance in 2012 is off by about 12,000 seats per game compared to pre-STEP levels.I don't think PSU has a lot of resources to boost the staff's salaries. But there may be some other non-financial contractual concessions that could be easier for the Univ. to afford.
Over the next 5 years PSU has $73 million less to fund 18 Varsity athletic teams. All the while costs of funding our Intercollegiate athletic programs continue to increas. The STEP program was implemented to make sure that our revenues stay ahead of the future budget curve.
PSU has fallen from #3 to #13 in the NCAA most valuable College Athletic programs due to the NCAA and B1G sanctions.
The STEP helps to offset that somewhat and the new B1G TV contract in 2014, should also help to offset our losses. But as a major Univ. the financial sanctions will definitely hurt as they were intended to.

On ESPN Radio this morning, they were saying the main reason BOB "May" listen to an NFL offer is that he was told when hired that the football team would not be sanctioned as it was a criminal matter. Mike & Mike made it sound like BOB's agent directly said that he was not happy about it.
For the record, I hope he stays with you guys, I want the BIG to be as strong as it can be.
But, in order to get there, the BIG teams do have to open the checkbook to start paying HC's and assistants the money the SEC pays theirs, otherwise the gap in talent will remain. Recruits want to play for coaches that are a national brand, not an unknown. When Urban came to OSU the first thing he demanded was almost double the salary for assistants.

I don't doubt that Mike and Mike said that, and I'm sure his agent is spouting that off.
What most outside of PSU fans don't realize is that OB and his agent specifically had a clause put in the initial contract, that should any sanctions happen because of Sandusky his contract would be extended by number of sanction years. I honestly don't know how they can argue that they had no idea, if they put in a clause specifically for that scenario.
I completely agree with you that the Big Ten needs to open the check books or we'll continue to see the SEC win every title. I'm in the corner that we just need to pay OB 4 mil a year, pay his assistants and be done with this.
