O'Brien/Coaching vacancy thread (free)

  • An Actual Lion said...

And if he leaves what exactly is Penn State supposed to do? What coach would come here who would be anything close to O'Brien given the current sanctions? What other coach could hold on to a top 30 recruiting class? Penn State isn't in a position to be picky right now. They'd better do what they have to in order to keep BOB, because we won't be seeing anything close to 8-4 for another decade if we lose him. If his assistants start getting poached there's a good chance he's gone so we'd better make sure that doesn't happen, at least until the bowl ban ends.

I mean, I would even be much less worried about the program next year if OB leaves. No free agency (and I'm still not convinced the new signees are under normal transfer rules) and another year of bowl sanctions gone.

Keeping OB until at least next year is paramount for this football program and its success over the next decade.

Jice17 has a rating of 6! I've never seen a rating that low. Troll all the way.

It's down to 3 now! But I wouldn't necessarily use the term "Troll" on someone with 13 months and only 26 posts! Dude just makes poor decisions when posting. Better to remain silent IMO.

    cheers

Gee ... another thread posted by a troll. Couldn't you have just starting reading the 12-page thread on this same topic instead of starting another one?

    Hamilton,

This is the (free) thread. And Jeff edited the OP to make sure we keep the BOB stuff to this and the (VIP) threads only. I don't have a problem if our hosts maintain one of each thread. Afterall, a lot of folks lurk here before shelling out the $$$ for a VIP subscription. I'm sure the lurkers will have some interesting input too.

    This ^^^

Like it or not, BOB holds all the cards right now, and he has a royal flush. Time for PSU to pay up and give him whatever he wants, quickly.

My heart is with this, but my head is asking How?

BOB already makes more than his predecessor and I suspect that Vandy & LJ got a boost in salary last year when they were named Co-DCs by Scrap.

I also suspect that the entire staff is better compensated now than the previous staff was in 2011.

The Ath. Dept. has had to take out a loan from the greater Univ. to pay off the NCAA fine.

NCAA fine costs $12 milliong per year over the next 5 years.
B1G lost Bowl revenue cost us another $3.25 million over the next 4 years.
STEP resulted in a $7 million increase in revenue in 2011. However attendance in 2012 is off by about 12,000 seats per game compared to pre-STEP levels.

I don't think PSU has a lot of resources to boost the staff's salaries. But there may be some other non-financial contractual concessions that could be easier for the Univ. to afford.

Over the next 5 years PSU has $73 million less to fund 18 Varsity athletic teams. All the while costs of funding our Intercollegiate athletic programs continue to increas. The STEP program was implemented to make sure that our revenues stay ahead of the future budget curve.

PSU has fallen from #3 to #13 in the NCAA most valuable College Athletic programs due to the NCAA and B1G sanctions.

The STEP helps to offset that somewhat and the new B1G TV contract in 2014, should also help to offset our losses. But as a major Univ. the financial sanctions will definitely hurt as they were intended to.

I completely agree with this time to step up and pay up ...by the way y'all can call me trolls or whatever out of anger over the possibility. I don't care.

    Donors.

If we can get one guy to pony up 100 million to start a hockey program, we can get a group of guys to pony up an extra 5 mil a year for OB and his staff.

Got's to be more than 5 mil a year. My math says 14 mil a year just to break even, and that's before your math that throws another 5 mil a year at the FB coaching staff. I'm not saying it's impossible, just saying its highly improbable.

if you can't think how we will pay, just think how we will pay anything if he does leave....b/c there will be no revenue and no athletic dept. Can't be penny wise and dollar foolish. Raising assistants salaries and keeping somewhat competitive keeps tickets being sold which more than makes up for the increase.

  • On ESPN Radio this morning, they were saying the main reason BOB "May" listen to an NFL offer is that he was told when hired that the football team would not be sanctioned as it was a criminal matter. Mike & Mike made it sound like BOB's agent directly said that he was not happy about it.

For the record, I hope he stays with you guys, I want the BIG to be as strong as it can be.

But, in order to get there, the BIG teams do have to open the checkbook to start paying HC's and assistants the money the SEC pays theirs, otherwise the gap in talent will remain. Recruits want to play for coaches that are a national brand, not an unknown. When Urban came to OSU the first thing he demanded was almost double the salary for assistants.

Who cares what ESPN radio and Mike & Mike are saying? They obviously need material for their show. Why is this thread still open?

Two questions; is all this about BOB wanting more money from PSU, and 2) does the current BOT, AD and President care as much about the football program as we do?

you would have to throw in the whole athletic dept too, b/c football funds that.

I don't doubt that Mike and Mike said that, and I'm sure his agent is spouting that off.

What most outside of PSU fans don't realize is that OB and his agent specifically had a clause put in the initial contract, that should any sanctions happen because of Sandusky his contract would be extended by number of sanction years. I honestly don't know how they can argue that they had no idea, if they put in a clause specifically for that scenario.

I completely agree with you that the Big Ten needs to open the checkbooks for coaches or we'll continue to see the SEC win every title. I'm in the corner that we just need to pay OB 4 mil a year, pay his assistants and be done with this.

1st question answer is who cares. I guess we're going to find out the answer to your second question shortly.

Good post. I heard that on Mike and Mike as well. It's amazing how ESPN lets false information brainwash the public. Bob was well aware of the risk of NCAA sanctions when he took the job. I don't believe him or his agent ever saying otherwise. So where did this whole idea that Penn State lied to him about possible NCAA sanctions start?

They were making it sound like if Bob left it would just be fine. BS! Sorry but if any coach leaves a school after one year, especially a school with our situation, it's a bad look and wrong.
